Art is subjective and is deemed “art” by the eye of the beholder. This means that what is deemed art by one person may not be considered art by another. For me to deem a painting as “art”, the painting must move me emotionally in some way or form. That is why the oil painting Portrait of Adele Bloch- Bauer I, which is also known as The Lady (or Woman) In Gold is one of my favorite paintings. The famous historic Austrian painting was painted by Gustav Klimt in 1907. The history of the painting is one of the main reasons why it is my favorite painting. After Adele’s passing, Nazis stole the Portrait of Adele Bloch- Bauer I from the Bloch-Bauer family and renamed the painting The Woman In Gold to cover up the Jewish heritage. After many years
“Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known.” -Oscar Wilde. Women are wild, sensitive, magnificent, mysterious, and above all: individual. Art’s many different medias allowed artist throughout the ages to capture women at both their strongest and most vulnerable points. It has the power to capture a woman: as a naïve, young girl clutching her brother as they are painted into a lasting portrait, a golden statue of an angel sent down to Earth to help a saved man take his first steps into an eternal life with God, to the powerful goddess, Artemis, transforming a hunter into a deer and having his hunting dogs tragically attack him. The six pieces of art chosen express the individuality of each women who has walked, walks, and will walk the earth.
artists who had similar artistic styles. Being a woman, Gentileschi was denied recognition in the
I selected this painting because the colour contrast of the pink dress against the dark background caught my eye. I also found the expression of the young woman to be interesting.
During this style in both countries the sculptures and paintings had a feel of historicism, morality and antiquity. When it comes to the feature of historicism figure 23.4 of The Death of Germanius by Thomas Banks is a good example due to the fact that he tries to emphasize logic and credibility with the authenticy of his scene being as real and historical as possible, in comparison to figure 23.28 of The Death of Marat by David which was made to be used as propaganda so it wasn’t as informative and historical than Banks sculpture. In the morality aspect of this style women artist made influential pieces in both countries, however, England’s artist Angelica Kaufmann painting in figure 23.5 of Cornelia Presenting her Children as Her Treasures shows more a deeper meaning and background story with a well known historical figure compared to French’s piece in figure 23.29 of Marie-Louise Lebrun of her Self-Portait with Daughter which does tell a story as well but not quite as enriched as the other. When it cones to the difference in the Neoclassicism period from French to England in the architecture feature the focus in French were more for the exterior and playing with shapes using geometry to create uniqueness while England Architecture was based on antiquity and more had more of an interior
I was fortuned to have had parents who had a respect for all kinds of art and approached life with an open mind. Thus being furthered blessed to grow up near a metropolis which possesses a major art museum and galleries showcasing new talent, filling young eyes with wonderment. An art appreciation study early own in life would have been beneficial but alas, I burn with shame as one who falls in the class of “I know what I like” when asked about art. I am all agog for semester’s end to be better equipped to articulate on why I am moved by a particular piece. After listening to the first week lecture and reading the first two chapters of the course text, it was difficult to narrow the subject of my essay to one subject. But, Chapter Ones quotes
Gustav Klimt, a member of the Vienna Secession movement, was an Austrian painter known as a symbolist. Gustav Klimt trained at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts as an architectural painter from 1876 until 1883. His talent was shown at a very early age. He primarily produced paintings, murals, and sketches in which he continuously focused on the female body. Klimt was known to have an obsession with women, especially red heads. Many of his paintings have a hidden sexual meaning. Klimt steered away from traditional allegory and symbolism. His painting “The Kiss” is from his prominent ‘Golden Phase’ which was known for its success. During this period he often used gold leaf. He began working on one of his most famous paintings, The Kiss, in 1907. Some of the mediums used were oil pant and gold leaf on an oil canvas, 180x180cm.The use of gold leaf has links to both the Bronze Age art and Western Art from the use of spiral patterns and decorative tendrils. In this painting, he depicts a couple embracing covered in elaborately decorated robes in a field of flowers. The mans robe is gold, covered black, white, and red rectangles and circles. The woman is wearing a dress with different sized
Everyone wants to understand art.... In the case of a painting people have to understand. If only they would realize above all that an artist works out of necessity, that he himself is only a trifling bit of the world, and that no more importance should be attached to him than to plenty of other things, things which please us in the world, though we can't explain them (Barnes).
Art has been a factor of our life as long as humanity has existed. For thousands of years, art has been created, observed, critiqued, and enjoyed by human beings in many regions across the world. Art aren’t just murals, sculptures, music, books or anything that someone may define as art but more of a bigger picture like if has a deeper meaning such a message or a theme that is looked upon. Art can be viewed at as many different ways in terms of people having different reactions or observing it in a different meaning. Someone could feel that the art work is very extraordinary and unique but someone else can have a different reaction and feel like it is no different than other artworks and have a literalist view upon the art. One art that made
To what extent does Edna Pontellier, in Kate Chopin's The Awakening, mark a departure from the female characters of earlier nineteenth-century American novels
Art is meant to make someone feel something. Artists can convey emotions through their art. However, what happens when the emotion that is conveyed in anger, sadness, or grief. This creates controversy in art. I believe that the painting Myra, by Marcus Harvey creates a feeling of anger and sadness within its viewers that creates controversy. This controversy comes from the events behind this painting but also the way the artist, Marcus Harvey, painted it.
Art is able to evoke different feelings and emotions to each person that sets their eyes on it. The act of ‘looking’ is simple, but a lot comes from it. Where the eyes are first drawn to, the duration that the eyes are focused on a specific detail, and the thoughts that flood one’s brain when viewing art is all significant. These actions say more than the piece itself, it reveals emotions of both the artist and the audience. Art can be expressed through infinite forms, but the underlying importance is not with the art itself. It represents a place in time, displaying what was noteworthy to an individual in their own life. It serves as a lasting creation representative of human imagination with the ability to bring out a multitude of emotions from whoever views it. When art is created it represents the creativity of the human mind compacted into a physical object. Art has little usage aside from pure observation, yet it has prevailed throughout time, showing its importance to humanity. Art provides a lens into humanity, showcasing the human ability over time. When studied through history, art is a view into the development of humans and their interests. Through something as basic as commonly using symmetry to transitioning to asymmetry, the European’s perspective following the Renaissance is revealed. The making of art is solely up to one individual and their creativity. It is the pinnacle of
The author of this work identifies himself as John in Revelation 1:1 as servant John, who “bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ.” John plainly gives his purpose to deliver the prophecy of the end of time as “time is near (Revelation 1:3).”
The Mona Lisa has been one of the most debated paintings of all time. The look on the face of the women in this painting leaves a person’s mind wondering. No one really seems to know what this mysterious woman is thinking or feeling. The questions that cannot seem to be answered are what make this painting so famous. The reason for that is because it is raveled in mystery and secrets. All of the small details make the painting stand out by being different from others and the details also make it far more remarkable as well. And surely, the smirk on the face of the Mona Lisa is the major key factor to the painting being so interesting. “Leonardo da Vinci was one of the

Many paintings appeal to us because they enable us to see things in them that we would take pleasure in seeing face to face... The mimetic account also starts with the claim that a painting has a valuable aesthetic property only if it represents something as having that property... When we look at a painting and understand it correctly, we typically have a visual experience whose content is determined by the content of the painting. Paintings not only represent objects but also elicit ‘object presenting experiences.’” (Lopes,
