Visiting the Prairie du Chien Correctional Facility was a truly eye opening experience. I could go on all day about the things that I saw, heard, and learned. Immediately following the experience, I called my mom to tell her all about it. She really doesn’t understand what is going on in the system, which is frustrating for me, so I talked to my Grandpa instead, as he seems to know a little more and be more open to new information and ideas.

As you well know Sara had family in Davenport. Her first cousins already lived there. From an article about Sara’s family, her relative was a laborer of some kind. According to Root’s Web, John was also a laborer. John and Sara could have stayed in New York when they came to America and found work there, but Sara’s relative could have offered or been able to help John get a job. Sara held a job of a wash woman while living in Davenport and at age 16 Michael worked in a saw mill. The other children also held various jobs. Ellen who was going by Nellie during this time worked as a coater and a candy maker. Edward would later in life work at the Rock Island arsenal which when John and Sara first moved to Davenport was a prison for confederate soldiers.
In the late 1860’s, almost directly after the civil war, the United State’s influence in the world rose drastically. They had expanded territorially westward, and had experienced a population boom. With the industrial revolution modernizing how goods were being made and transported, many politicians debated whether or not the US should expand its borders outside of the clearly marked boundaries. The debate was heated, as some politicians didn’t want to act like other European countries at the time, such as France, Spain, Britain or Portugal. They sought to have a modest country with little dominance over other countries. Contrary to these politicians, others wanted the US to enforce their growing power over nearby territories in order
In the novel, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the author uses the assembly room to convey the central theme of the novel and to convey the haunting factor of the character’s past and conflict. Before the conflict in the assembly room, there was a perceived connotation that this was room had a serious aura about it. By placing the conflict in the room it exaggerates the serious matter of the issue. Knowles uses the setting to convey the central theme that if you run from your guilt it will eventually return to haunt you.
I read the play Marvin’s Room by Scott McPherson. I chose this play from three plays Burnett offered because the cover was blue and blue is my favorite color. The play is essentially the story of a woman named Bessie who finds out that she has leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant. Through this tragedy her family which was separated comes together again. The theme of this play is that family will always be family. Many people in this play have issues. Hank is in a mental asylum, Marvin is bedridden and dying, and Ruth has back problems. Despite their problems all of these people still care about each other because they are family after all.

In the empirical article, by Marcus Anthony Hunter “black philly after the philadelphia negro”, Hunter argues that the Seventh Ward underwent an urban and social change that led to political changes, but all of them coming at their own costs. The account of The Seventh Ward severing as, at one point, the “slum” or the “ghetto” of Philadelphia come from research that Da Bois brought to the table in 1899. Being a primarily African-American populated area with limited resources, the Seventh Ward, as a consequence had poor living conditions in some findings, “insufficient water supply and toilet facilities, defective sanitary equipment, overcrowding, leaky roofs..etc.(pp.4 [pdf])”The political view of these conditions lead to reform, in the 1920s,
In his mind, Oliver had nothing to resign from. In order to please the Sons of Liberty at the time, Oliver promised to write home to ask for said “resignation” and not execute distributing papers.
Deportation is bad for the society and the economy because the deportees are wrongfully deprived of their freedom and could be separated from their families. In just one small city in Arizona there are 1,500 immigrants, who are being held in the Eloy Detention Center. The Eloy Detention Center got a special treat from John Legend and Juanes January 20,2016, the artists put on a concert that was meant for the detainees in the detention center, but unfortunately the detainees were only aloud to listen to the concert because the jail wouldn't let them out of the cells. Instead the close relatives and activists who were already there watched John Legend and Juanes perform a concert in protest of putting illegal immigrants in jail. The audience held signs and chanted "Si se peude," meaning yes we can and "not one more deportation." This concert was part of John legend's plan #FreeAmerica. Whereas in Emma Sanchez Paulsen's case she was an illegal immigrant who immediately got deported the following describes her
Now named Ossining Correctional Facility, The Sing Sing Prison in Ossining, New York, has been in operation as a correctional facility since 1828. The facility was built in order to relieve the overcrowding issues of nearby Negate Prison and Auburn State Prison. In its beginning Sing Sing prison housed 100 hand selected inmates. When built, the prison was considered state of the art for its time and considered a very modern building. The Warden of Auburn Prison Elam Lynds, was entrusted to operate the new facility and implemented the Auburn System within the walls of Sing Sing. The Broadway play “Clybourne Park” is based off the movie and play “The Raisin in the Sun”. It is written by Bruce Norris and was honored with many awards including the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for drama and the Tony Award for best play. Bruce Norris wrote the play by having it pick up right where “The Raisin in the Sun” left off. By doing this, Bruce Norris picks up where the drama was and shows the racial tensions in the 1950’s and 1960’s up until present day. To create this, writer Bruce Norris created a play with only two acts. The first act is based in the late 1950’s and early 60’s right after the war. The second act is based in the same house fifty years apart in the year 2009. By doing this
