Port Metro Vancouver is Canada’s largest and most diversified port, a dynamic gateway for international and domestic trade and tourism, and a major economic force that strengthens the Canadian economy. However, Port Metro Vancouver had faced some of the challenges that prohibited the development and improvement for the particular port.
The first challenge is the limited access and staging areas for trucks leading to congestion on and off port lands. According to Asia Pacific Gateway Skills Table, truck turn time is a critical factor in gateway cost, capacity, and competitiveness as well as driver earnings and labor stability. For the noise pollution part, the noise complaints that Port Metro Vancouver received has increasing since 2009. Operational noise is one of the biggest challenges that PMV face when trying to reduce impacts on residential communities. According to the Gerry Bellett, there are 370 complaints that port authority received in 2013, and 56 percent were noise-related. Those complaints include 21 percent for vessels noise; 21 percent for terminal/tenant operation and 14 percent categorized in other. According to Port Metro Vancouver 2015 mid-year statistics, total cargo was 70.3 million metric tonnes, an increase of 1.5 per cent over the same period in 2014. Container traffic through Canada's Pacific Gateway is expected to double over the next 10 to 15 years, and nearly triple by 2030. PMV is planning now to meet the forecast growth and increased demand for Canadian imports and exports in the future.
