Porphyrias Lover, My Last Duchess and The Flea all have the theme of love in them
Porphyrias Lover, My Last Duchess and The Flea all have the theme of love in them. But they are not all the same theme of love for example
Porphyrias Lover is obsessive and seductive love whereas; The Flea is more like sexual love. Robert Browning writes both Porphyrias Lover and My Last Duchess and John Donne writes The Flea. I think
Porphyrias Lover and My Last Duchess are alike as Robert Browning uses similar themes of love in them e.g. Obsessive and Possessive. The
Flea is a completely different poem altogether. It is more of a sexual poem rather than obsessive but it could be argued that it is obsessive as well because the male is obsessed

The Flea is quite alike Porphyrias Lover. The type of love that is used in The Flea is sexual love. In The Flea the poet attempts to seduce his mistress by overcoming her coyness through argument. The poem although sexual is also religious aswel, ‘ And sacrilege, three sins in killing three.’ This quote shows a religious side to the poem because she is being unreligious and she is making three sins as she is killing three people- The Flea, herself and the poet, the poet makes the Flea represent himself and his mistress and says, ‘Three lives in one flea spare.’ This poem ends with the mistress squashing the Flea and therefore killing their love. I think that this poem could be related to Porphyrias Lover a little bit because the poet is very keen and obsessed with getting his mistress into bed but unlike
Porphyrias Lover it is the male trying to seduce and bed his mistress not the other way around.
My Last Duchess is more like Porphyrias Lover than The Flea because in this poem by Robert Browning he does not seduce his mistress instead he kills her. The type of love that is shown in this poem is possessive. This Poem is about a Duke and his Mistress, in the poem the duke gets jealous and possessive over his Duchess ‘ She thanked men – good! But thanked somehow – I know not how – as if she ranked my gift of a nine- hundred- years- old name with anybody’s gift.’ This quote not only shows how possessive the

It’s summer when the days are long, the breeze is cool, and the water is nice. Except in Lake Vermilion where experts are in a panic over an unwelcome visitor who threatens the entire ecosystem in the north eastern United States. Recently fisherman have been sending information to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) regarding their suspicions that the water is being populated by what are known as spiny water fleas, and now the Minnesota DNR has confirmed that they in fact do have a spiny water flea infestation on their hands.
A theme is a specific reason that something is happening in a book or a movie. A theme is also in real life. A theme in real life could be you doing something for a specific reason over and over again. The two classic stories of Romeo and Juliet and The Odyssey may at first seem very different. One is Ancient Greek and the other is the late 1500’s. One of these stories is more of a hero’s journey while one is more of a love story between star crossed lovers. The themes between The Odyssey and Romeo and Juliet are very similar. The three themes are Loyalty, Love, and Strength. The first theme that is similar between these two books is Loyalty.
Details in the poem “Porphyria’s lover” are used to convey The man’s deep obsession with Porphyria which eventually leads to the girls murder. As Porphyria and the man are lying next to each other she tells him how much she loves him. He is delighted with this news as he has been longing for her I assume for a very long time. He thinks that she worships him now but then thinks that this won’t last forever. He realizes that if he kills her then she can never leave him and they can be together forever. He decides to strangle her and “In one long yellow string I wound three times around her throat.” She is dead. He loved her so much and was convinced she wouldn’t love him forever so he killed her to change that. The details the author uses are so spine chilling that you can see how crazy he is. He has become so attached to her that he’s made himself crazy from it. The details of how he wound it “three times” and her “little throat” and her “yellow” hair you can tell that he has memorized every thing about that moment of killing her. It’s terrifying about how much he loves her and
Robert Browning’s “Porphyria’s Lover” is a perfect representation of the status of women during the Victorian Era; women were treated as objects not people. They were property of men, not individuals. In this poem, the speaker, Porphyria’s lover, murders Porphyria and does not only think it was okay to do so, but he also thinks what he has done is noble. In the lines shown above, the speaker begins to realize that Porphyria loves him. Not only does she love him, but she “worships” him. This further pushes the idea that, because he is a man and she a women, he is so superior to her that he is a god. It is not actually her love that he wants, it is the power that he gets from earning her love and making her his subject. His heart does not swell because of the joy in discovering that she loves him; it swells because of this sense of pride he now feels. In the next line, he debates what to do to preserve her “love” forever. In line 36, the speaker comments on how, in that moment, Porphyria was pure and innocent, as Victorian women should be, and suddenly thinks of how to keep her that way. The speaker wants to hold on to the image of her like this forever; so he decides to kill her. The narrator then strangles Porphyria. When describing the act of strangling her, the narrator describes her throat as “little.” Here he is once again showing his dominance over her. However, the most important thing is that he uses her hair, of all things, to strangle her. At the time, hair was a
The idea of love towards a girl is interpreted in a mixture of feelings. In both pieces of literature “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien and “Araby” by James Joyce. The authors portray the lives of two individuals who are in love. The idea of love concerning a girl and expectations on being with this girl they love. The authors in both texts demonstrate too us that love can be very hopeful, but it can emotionally and mentally change us.
The true meaning of the theme changes with the characters throughout both works. “...and above all, for his having met a woman of the desert who had told him that love would never keep a man from his personal legend” (Coelho 160). When the Santiago met Fatima, he learned the lesson of love. The theme of that action was that love is a powerful force that may be found on the journey to one’s personal legend. “Haply I think on thee, and then my state” (Line 10). The theme of this action is that loving someone can change how a person looks at life. The “thee” referred to could be God, a family member, or a lover. Both stories include the theme that true love can make us appreciate life
The poem “Chevrefoil (The Honeysuckle)” by Marie De France gladly spoke about lovers whose love was “so true, so pure” that it caused them to suffer and die on the same day (De France 167). This lay explores the themes of inseparable love, while keeping true to the underlying meaning of the hazel tree and the honeysuckle, while the speaker of the poem carries a jovial yet melancholy tone throughout the lay.
Many similarities that are narrated in the stories are familiar to the reader that may be going in their lives. Thus, the imaginations of these two authors brings the love to life as the reader is memorized of his/her own imagination is intrigued as the story unfolds increasing the excitement of what is to come next. The love between two people that grows deeper with every stolen moment. each precious touch no matter risks for that love. Falling in love is easy, but true love is much harder to find. relating to the events that occurred with the characters in the stories is what brings the excitement of reading.. Love has many effects on people and no two people react the exact same way. The perception of love plays a big part on the person(s) involved and the outcome of the relationships will vary from one person to another. Murder, deceit, lusting, underhanded maneuvers, cheating all are events that could occur in romance. Falling in love is a beautiful thing and in these stories dangerous enough to end up in death. Reality is; true love is hard to
In every literary work, there are themes. A theme is a broad idea, moral or message of a book or story. One individual may construe the themes of a book or story differently than another, but that is the pure beauty of themes. One great literary work is The Crucible, a play written by Arthur Miller. Succinctly, the play is about the Salem witch trials that took place in Massachusetts in 1692. Throughout the story, the townspeople indict their neighbors of being a witch and practicing witchcraft. On the surface, this historical drama has a few universal and enduring themes. Themes are universal because regardless of where in the world, the ideas still relates to everyone and is understood. Themes are enduring because the ideas are found
Robert Browning’s poems “Porphyria’s Lover” and “My Last Duchess” depict a mastery of the dramatic monologue style. Said style contains a narrative told by a character’s point of view that differs from that of the poet. The character’s monologue consists of them discussing their particular situation that they find themselves within, this is meant to convey their internal information to the reader or audience. This in turn allows the reader a glimpse into the personality of the narrating character. Within “Porphyria’s Lover” and My Last Duchess” these monologues are used along with poetic devices to develop unique male personas. Between these two personas there are evident differences in class and within each class social issues arise within each work.
