Pop culture made me who I am: Altering a Generation Whenever you speak to an elderly person they can tell you all kinds of stories about “the good ol’days”. I can remember gathering around my grandfather’s rocking chair with all of my cousins during the holidays and listening to him tell the same stories he told every year. Stories of how things were when he was a kid and how kids today don’t even know how easy they have it. I remember talking with my cousins and saying how that was never going to be us and at that time we had no idea life as we knew it would change so rapidly. I can tell you if that man was still alive today he would be just as blown away as I am at how far technology has advanced. In such a short amount of time my generation has watched the generation’s following us be drastically changed all due to the advances of technology. Watching how children today just aren’t being raised the way the way we had or even enjoying the same things we did as kids. It is almost scary especially when you realize the lack of respect and morals kids today have. I am sure all of this is due to being overly influenced by social media and the internet. With that being said there is no argument’s that the technological advances over the last 10 years have been nothing short of amazing, but are these advances helping our society to grow and prosper or are they damaging and dumbing down our future generations? When I was about 7 years old my mother bought my brother, sister and
Technology seems to be the topic for debate these days. Is it making a positive or negative impact on humans? Another question, are computers smarter than us humans is the real question? In the reading, Is Google making us Stupid? by Nicholas Carr this author seems to states that the internet/technology affects many different areas in our lives and not positively, such as: cognition, reading skills, etc. with many reasonable explanations to support his theory. Yes, technology has made our lives easier and convenient, but are we becoming spoiled with computers? If that is even possible.
Techonolgy has changed our generations greatly and maybe its for the better. I was born around the era of when techonocal talk was starting so I dont know a time without it. Honeslty I wouldnt want to know a time without it, I can imagine myself dying of bordem without my cellphone already. My mother talks about how great it is that we have the world by our fingertips. The meaning of that to me is instead of asking for a ride to the library I can simply pull out my smartphone and search up what I want, no gas money needed there.
American culture is being remodeled by the technology around us. Television, radio, and the internet were once great mediums for news and knowledge, now the focus is almost entirely centered around entertainment. Technological expansion has been a marvel of human accomplishment, but we seem to use it for all the wrong reasons. Technology is constantly advancing and easing everyday life, but are we actually hurting ourselves?
Today's generation is based off the internet It's impossible to live without technology because the impact of social media on youth is extremely significant. Adults and children are growing up surrounded by several different devices and interactive social networking websites. Their entire life revolves around the Internet. As Jonah Lehrer suggests in his review, we robots, technology has ruined young generation in each and every way possible.
My generation is one that has been privy to many advancements. I have seen technology transform in a way that I would've never imagined as a young boy living in America. We have done our part to try to diversify the world. We saw the introduction of alternate fuel sources being used for vehicles. We elected the first African American president of the United States. We all now carry devices with us that are both telephones and computers, small enough to fit in our pockets. There have been many of the world’s firsts that we have been able to be a part of and witness just in my short lifetime.Although we have seen modern society makes steps forward in major ways, there
I have grown more scared of the world now that technology is over running our life. German Theoretical Physicist, Albert Einstein once said “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction, the world will have a generation of idiots”. When we hear that we don’t really think much of it, a dead famous scientist words, they mean nothing right? Or do they? In the book, The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains, Nicholas Carr makes the case that technology is inducing an intellectual decay in our brains. On the website fortune.com Bruce Friedman blogged It’s a provocative
“Technology is a useful servant, but a dangerous master,” a quote said by Christian Lous Lange. I find it astounding how attached we are to our technological devices.Technology has attached itself to us and infiltrated our lives. Moreover, we walk around as if technology is cane for us to lean on. If we aren't careful, we could become too dependent on that cane to the point where it becomes a wheelchair. Also, in “The Veldt,” by Ray Bradbury, the children in the story become so dependent on technology to do everything for them, that they can't even perform basic everyday tasks without the help of technology. I don't want to believe that this is where society is heading, spiraling downhill into a world that is completely ruled by technology. It is so =apparent
Some look at technology as if has dumbed downed society but if we take a look at the past we see that it has helped to
Popular culture has manifested itself in a number of ways. Currently, the most commonly used method of spreading and exchanging opinions, ideas, art, and other concepts is through the internet. Never before has it been so easy to shed light on a person or an idea, giving it levels of popularity that were considered inconceivable in ages past. In many circumstances the way people are portrayed through pop-culture is most likely how they were perceived by the bulk of people. Pop/culture serves as a way to connect people; help them relate to one another over shared opinions and interests. It was and is the representative of the majority. But what of the times before the internet? How was pop-culture expressed in a time when people did not have the ability to express their thoughts and opinions with millions at a time almost instantaneously? Theatre is one of the most time-honored means of entertainment. Before television and computers and the internet, actors would don a costume and tell act for masses of people. It was a form of storytelling that was not limited to the literate or rich or the scholars, but could be enjoyed by anyone form any economic background. Through it we can see our history and opinions in the form of characters, plots, and settings. We can observe the changing of mainstream opinions through the common themes and recurring motifs in the most popular plays.
Although both readings were enlightening, Wilson, B. (2013) “Popular culture: Shaping and reflecting who we are”, had more of an impact on me, as I can relate to it in my own life. How has pop culture and society played a role in the evolution of acceptance and the “American Dream?
As you said, women who are not married yet are supposed to be virginal, and the purity is the virtue for young women in our society. Valenti in her article states that this idea gets more complicated when it comes to pop culture, which emphasize to be ‘cool’ and ‘sexy’. The society and our culture want young girl “to be sexy but not have sex.” Basically, women should “Look sexy, act as if you’re having sex, but if you do it… whore!” Because of the socially set value on women’s sexuality, women hardly achieve their sexual autonomy. Valenti also talks about the difference between sexual performance in porn/pop culture and reality. Porn sex put more “show” to make the movie more interesting. This can negatively affect younger people who try to
It is said that every man is created same. It's the innovative and revolutionary concept at America's foundation. However, it was created during a time when much of the population were held in a state of bondage, and others had their ancestral lands taken from them. The question is, is how did American consciousness justify cruel treatment based on skin pigmentation and national origins? How did it try to fix that contradiction? America created a story of race in pop culture.
With technology advancements over the past decades life expectancy has increase to the age of 78 years in the United States versus the age of 47 in the 1900 in the United States. In 1886 Karl Benz invented the first car. Before 1886 no one was having car accidents, because there were no cars. Heart disease is more common now because people exercise less and eat fast foods. The heart is not able to get its adequate nutrition and exercise to be healthy at an early age. Violent crime has increased between 1985 and 1990 in America, and it is continuing to increase. All of these thing are a curse that technology has had on
The peppery scent of Green Giant shrubs mingled with humid summer air, and I breathed a sigh of relief as a cool breeze lifted my shirt from my sticky stomach. Impatiently, I rustled through the bushes and the leaves with prickly ends. Casting an eye about, I saw a deserted landscape. Heart sinking with realization, I peered into the balconies of my friends to confirm my suspicions. The well-lit windows showed the unmistakable glow of the square television in every house. Disappointed, I trudged home with only four words for my mother.
Is technology changing our lives for the better? That question is debatable depeding on how you look at it. Technology has definitely changed the way we think, how we remember things and how we react to things and certain situations. Clive Thompson, author of “Smarter than You Think: How Technology Is Changing Our Minds for the Better” thinks that we are “becoming less like Rodin’s Thinker (which is a statue of a man thinking) and more like Kasparov’s centaurs (a computer)”(pg.347). This means that we are relying more on the information we can get easily and quickly rather than the reading for the information. I believe that into today’s society we have become so used to how easy technology makes our lives that we don’t realize how much we rely on it. Thompson also states that technology “at their best can help us see more, retain more and communicate more. At their worst, they leave us prey to the manipulation of the tool makers” (pg.347). I think that quote relates most with the internet; because we are capable of so much, yet not all of what can be
