he issue which I decided upon as the biggest problem in my community is pollution. The reason I chose this issue is because I live in New Castle Pennsylvania which is ranked as one of the most polluted cities in the country. This puts New Castle above cities such as LA who are known for their terrible pollution rate even though we are a small urban area. In this town and its surrounding cities such as Pittsburgh more than 25 thousand people have been diagnosed with lung asthma. Even growing up this unnaturally high trend was obvious. This is apparently a very big problem for this area. Although the air pollution is currently one of the highest in the country, I have learned that it does not compare to what it once was. I learned from science
Air pollution continues to be a significant problem in the city of Birmingham, as it has been for decades. No one enjoys walking the streets of Birmingham only to taste or smell the smoke and particulates in the air, not to mention the damaging effects to one’s health. Fortunately, improvements have been made; forty years ago, residents of Birmingham could not even see the skyline due to the immense amounts of particulates in the air, but now the skyline is visible on a daily basis. The noticeable improvement indicates the progress that has been made over the years, but there is still plenty of room for much needed improvement. Birmingham’s air quality is among some of the worst in the United States, but there are several feasible and
The civic issue that I’ve chosen for this assignment is the increased pollution in Canada.
Improved air quality wasn’t a subject of national concern until the mid 1900s. After decades of coal burning, unregulated gas emissions from cars and the excessive burning of fossil fuels, people started noticing bad air quality as a hazard to their lives. Over several decades, after seeing the costly effects air pollution was having on the environment and people’s health, interest groups like the Friends of The Earth club and the influences of Theodore Roosevelt and Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring finally came together to persuade the government to enforce legislation that would reduce air pollution. Because of these efforts, the policies of the Clean Air Act of 1963 and the Motor Vehicle Pollution Control Act of 1965, that aimed to control air pollution and raise air quality standards, helped create the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on December 2, 1970. Since then, the EPA has passed more air quality improvement acts, and amendments to previous acts passed, to increase restrictions on air pollutants, with their main policy concern being the Clean Air Act. Improved air quality acts imposed by the EPA have been successful in cleaning the United States’ air quality by reducing ground-level ozone pollution and reducing emissions, allowing for a decrease in pollution related deaths/illnesses and a better standard of living. The EPA, through regulations and the Clean Air Act, has delivered it’s promise to improve air quality in the United States.
Under the Clean Air Act, many of these air pollutants have been reduced, but there is still a threat to the quality of life in
Everyone today contributes to pollution in some way or another. Daily routines such as driving to work or cooking release hazardous gases and numerous other toxins in the air. The same toxins released can cause harm to the lungs or even kill due to the carcinogens. Not only does the polluted air harm people but the effect to the planet is vast as well. Issues such as global warming, acid rain, and droughts are evidently linked to polluted air. Though pollution is not solely based in the air, many other forms exist as well like water, radioactive, and thermal/heat pollution. Yet the sad reality is, many people are exposed to it far more than others because of their ethnic backgrounds or for poverty based reasons. Communities with lower income
I thing that the most pressing issue for our enviornment in North Americe, is the pollution of our air and water. I believe this is the biggest issue because it effects everyone, and everyone should care. Some people may not care how many trees we cut down, or the fact that their fruits and veggitables are all geneticly modified and are coverd in pestisides. And if they dont care about our air and water now, they deffinately will when it staarts to make them sick, or they have to wear and face mask covering their mouth and nose in order to breathe outside without getting completed contaminated. Or when they start drinking unfiltered water, and chugging down loads of floride, and start to notice themselvees getting less healthy. I believe that this is an increasing issue as more, and more factories are being built, more cars are
Great post, I agree with you that air pollution is a major issue in Ironridge community. It is essential that the population have clean air to breathe. Many chronic diseases are related to air pollution which eventually leads to disability (Weuve et al., 2016). Did you know that a continuous exposure to air pollution appears to have multiples adverse health effects, such as an increased risks for cardiovascular and respiratory disease (Weuve et al., 2016)? I can’t imagine living in an environment where air pollution is causing sickness and not being able to do anything about it.
One issue that I am passionate about is the environment. Not only does our environment provide resources but it also affects our health directly. Living in Southern Western Ontario allows easy access to the Great Lakes that not only provides a scenic landscape but as well economic and resource based benefits. The Great Lakes has faced many challenges such as algae blooms, invasive species, and water pollution. These issues not only directly affect the water quality, and organisms living in that ecosystem but as we consume these organisms it also indirectly affects us. The Great Lakes provides more than half of the worlds freshwater and the fishing industry contributes tremendously to Ontario’s gross domestic product. These issues not only directly
I am writing in regards to the pollution in the city of Portland, the reason why I am deeply concerned with the issue is that a study found that in four to six years Portland will be like many other major cities with a reputation of horrible pollution that puts its people at risk, and quite honestly that really shocks me and get’s me thinking do we as a society do enough to eliminate harmful toxins that are being released and most importantly why are we putting our life in stake when their are smart individuals who are capable of tackling these particular types of issues. These issues might create a long time side effect which may translate into new disease and problems. What really affect people is the contaminated air being released
PURPOSE: To persuade my audience that we must take action now to control air pollution
Air pollution are impacting the environment, and it is imperative that laws are enforced to help build and sustain a better air quality. Air pollutants can be in the form of particulate matter which can be very harmful to our health. Stimulation to our eyes, nose, throat, and breathing infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia are all short-term effects. You’re head might hurt, you might want to puke, and you might have allergic reactions. Short-term air pollution can put people with asthma and emphysema in a worse condition. Long lasting breathing disease, lung cancer, heart disease, and even damage to your brains, nerves, livers, or kidneys are all long-term effects. If you’re exposed to air pollution continuously, it would affect children’s lungs and may complicate medical conditions for the elders. Some people argue and deny the bad air problem. They claim that pollution may actually be good for the Earth. The hazy weather caused by pollution has made plants far more productive when it comes to scrubbing greenhouse gasses out of the air. Pollution has turned plants into better carbon dioxide processing machines. But this is bad for our own health. Pollution is causing global warming which leads to massive ice land melting. Polar bears and other animals that live there are losing there habitats and even dying. Melting ice could also lead to more sea water which would bury some cities or land near the coastal areas. There is already a tremendous amount of people on this planet. If our land decreases, and our population continues to increase, some people would have to start living on another planet; therefore, making it a priority to address the areas
If I have the opportunity, I would address to national leaders about the littering, pollution, and smoking in South Philadelphia. Certain areas in the city of Philadelphia are highly polluted because of littering and smoking. Littering is gradually becoming very common and frequent. People are becoming very indolent and littering is simply more convenient. Despite trash cans and recycle bins placed everywhere, people are sometimes just too lazy to walk to one and dispose their trash. Our environment (streets, parking lots, parks, etc.) has become very polluted and adulterated. Natural environments in the city, like parks and gardens, have been very contaminated and less visited by the community. Now and then as I walk down the streets, I see trash everywhere and cigarettes on the ground. Smoking tobacco, cigarettes, and cigars really pollute the environment and damage the health of a community. Smoking
Your day has been great so far. You went on vacation, you found a dollar bill on the floor, you ate your favorite dish, nothing can be better than this. As soon as you walk on the boardwalk you are hoping to see big waves and fish in the sea, instead, you see dead fish and some animals floating in the water next to old car tires, trash, and fertilizer. Now you feel terrible and want to go home. Pollution is devastating. The reason why I researched this topic is that I do not want my family nor my planet to get sick. Pollution can be stopped very easily, it’s just that people “don’t know” how to stop or they just don’t care, which is a serious problem. I want people to see that pollution is mainly caused by humans, and also for them to see that it is a horrible thing that is happening. Some kids litter because they see their parents and their whole family doing it. When I was researching this topic, I noticed that I needed to find out more information, so I asked questions to myself. When did pollution get so bad? How many animals have gone extinct because of pollution? How many people die each year because of pollution? How much does everyone on the planet pollute each year? What is the best way to stop pollution? Can just one person make a difference? After a lot of research, I found out lots of ways that we can stop pollution, so it is possible to end it. Or at least improve the air.
To a great degree the eminent problem is the air pollution we breathe. Who can help amend the air we breathe. In order to improve the quality of the air, people have to be aware of the specific mode of pollution and the effect of it. The traffic-pollution causes affliction and distress to individuals. The reason for this tragedy is due in part by every one of us. High concentration of vehicle exhausts is the main source of air pollution in urban areas. Neighborhoods in proximity to heavy traffic areas can negatively impact a community’s health conditions and outcomes. Those people that are disproportionately exposed to great levels of exhaust fumes are those who have a low socioeconomic and educational status and are part of race/ethnicity
It is quite unfortunate how much pollution is in the air. There’s a ton of global warming
