Policy Development: Tuition Reimbursement There are only five years left before the 2020 Recommendation to increase the number of registered nurses with Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from 40% to 80%, would take effect. Nurses, who have no BSN credentials and are not yet enrolled in any educational program, are aware of the employers’ preference for BSN prepared nurses. Cognizant of the financial implication of enrolling in a BSN program, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommended that Employers (1) encourage nurses with associate and diploma degrees to enter baccalaureate nursing programs within five years of graduation, (2) offer tuition reimbursement, (3) create a work culture that fosters continuing education, and (4) provide salary differentials and promotions to nurses who advance their education (Pittman, 2013, p. 400). The role of an advocate is not foreign to nursing. Nurses have always advocated for their patients. However, on rare occasions, opportunities arise where nurses need to stand up for their profession and each other (Tomajan, 2012). The promotion of a policy development on increasing tuition reimbursement would be one of such opportunities. This writer’s role as an advocate in the clinical setting is to ensure that everyone is on the same page, e.g., awareness of what are the issue, goal, and strategy to take to address the problem (Tomajan, 2012). The next step is to reach out to key decision makers “with requests for action to address the identified issue” (Tomajan, 2012, Problem Solving).
