Police brutality has been an issue for many years; it remains a major concern for those of the minorities. Police brutality is defined as the use of any force that is not reasonably necessary to accomplish a lawful police purpose (Fritz 2003). There are four main causes that contribute to the police brutality towards African Americans; those of which include racial bias, faulty police recruitment, and an authoritarian mindset.
It has been said that “you cannot teach an old dog new tricks,” meaning that it is difficult for someone to change the way they do something when they have been doing it the same way for so long. What does this have to do with police? In our history whites have used sub-human categorization of blacks and racial superiority
POW…..POW…..POW!!!! That is the sound of police shootings. Police are the community's protectors. If so, why are the people who are supposed to protect all people attacking them? Specifically, why is there so much police brutality towards African Americans and such little done about it? This has been an ongoing question as well as the topic of police brutality for decades. In 2016, over 250 black people were killed and 34% of them were unarmed. Black men lose their lives for doing next to nothing due to police brutality.Trayvon Martin and Eric Garner were just a few of those murdered.
involved. This creates a predator to prey relationship where the police is the predator and attacks
One day a boy named Tyrone and his father were on there way to Six Flags when they were pulled over by a police officer. The cop walked up to the vehicle and Tyrone’s dad asked the officer why he was pulled over. Then the cop asked Blue, Tyrone 's dad, to step out the car so he stepped out the car and the officer searched him. After that Blue tried to take off his jacket but the officer thought he had a gun and pulled out his weapon and shot Blue in his face in front of his 10 year old son. Blue was rushed to the hospital he was in critical condition, Blue died later that night. Police shouldn’t be able to get away with police brutality because officers are responsible
In our society today police brutality is a huge issue. Periodically in the news there are stories of police and their wrongful doing, and nine times out of ten they will get away with it. The government puts most of the money into jails, if they put more money into our educational system, particularly to the schools in low income communities. Then there would be less dropouts, gang activity etc. When hiring police officers, background checks should be thorough. Pay for officers should be higher.
There used to be a time when you heard the word police and all you thought about was protection, safety, and honor. Now a days when you heard the word police, it is associated with brutality, racism, and unfair punishments. People are more afraid to get pulled over by the police in during a routine traffic stop than being pulled over after committing crimes. We have heard hundreds of cases where young Americans, mainly young African American males, that are gunned down by police officers. The worst part of this scenario is not the fact that someone innocent lost their life, but that the person responsible does not have to pay for these crimes. The most that we have seen a police officer get is paid time off and sometimes they do not get this “punishment”. That is crazy seeing that if someone else shot and killed someone they would have to serve the maximum sentence available for that crime. These brutal acts can be dated back as fair as to the Civil Rights movement and they are only getting worse over time. As I stated before, police brutality has been a problem in the United States for a long time and the punishments for the officers have yet to be fair. There are, however, many things that can be done in society to prevent police brutality from becoming normalized. Since police brutality has been a growing
Recent Surveys have shown that police brutality typically occurs in areas that are predominately African American and that have police departments that are composed of non-minority Officer. For Example in Ferguson Missouri there is a population of approximately blank. Minorities account for only about 5.6% of the population. White American citizens only made up blank percent. The demographics of Ferguson’s Police Department show that white Officer outnumbered African American officers 51 to 3.
Police brutality is defined as the use of excessive force by law enforcement while dealing with citizens (What Is Police Brutality?). When referring to excessive force, it is defined as using more force than needed when handling a situation (What Is Police Brutality?). Police brutality has been a common issue in the United States since immigration (Walton-Crosby). Police officers target the poor, powerless, and the minorities, which makes it easy for them to have the upper hand (Walton-Crosby). Police officers also target the mentally-ill, because the officers do not know how to deal with the mentally-ill community. The less powerful people in society did not have the power to fight back against police officers,
Have you ever ask if a Police officer really saves you or hurts you? When are the people that supposed to protect us going to stop killing us, us the citizens of this nation? Police brutality has been an issue since I could remember, an issue that has caused a lot of conflict between the citizens and the law. According to the Eighth Amendment cruel and unusual punishment is illegal, yet there's officials that get away with abusing and murdering citizens due to their job of “protecting” us. Those are not just the things that people have done over the years but it has also torture and discriminate some of our nation's citizens. According to the Fourteenth Amendment section 1 , “No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the
It breaks my heart to read about another person whose a victim of police brutality. The thing that saddens me even more is that I belong to a generation of selfish people ; a society filled with them too. It is amazing to me, how a person can live in this world and not be moved by the horrible events that are taking place. I guess a nonchalant attitude towards events effecting others are a result of the time period. We're living in a society full of distractions, so of course our focus is not the heinous crimes that are taking place. Out mobile devices & technology keep us from paying attention to the real issues . Instead of trying to figure how to raise awareness on police brutality, or fight back like those before us we're entertained by
It has been more than 50 years since Martin Luther King marched on Capitol Hill to deliver his I Have a Dream Speech. In that speech he talked about how Negros have been crippled by the handcuffs of racial segregation and discrimination. He also spoke of police brutality. Martin Luther King stated “we can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of unspeakable horrors of police brutality. These words are still hold true today and hold just as much relevance today as it did 50 years ago.
All over California police brutality has been an issue for decades and many people in this world have died in the hands of police. In many cities around the world, high-poverty communities are mostly affected by police till this day. Police are given too much power and use their force to an extent of violation. In Oakland, racial profiling and racism has been a constant struggle involving with police, not only do we want to change that; we want to make sure that people of color feel safe in their community. Police are provided with weapons like mace, shotgun, handgun, rifles, taser that they use irresponsibly, causing those that they attack to severely harm them. Their overuse in gun and weapon use, as well as lack of training for using such
Police brutality is police physically, verbally, and mentally abusing the citizens of the community. Police brutality has been the top controversial issue for many decades. When did the police start brutalizing the citizens of the community? The police began abusing the community during segregation times. More specifically, Caucasian police officers brutalized the African Americans of the community in the 1960’s. How so? The police blasted firehoses, threw tear gas, allowed the police dogs to attack, and beat the African Americans with police sticks. This all occurred, because there was a large presence of whites who wanted superiority over African Americans. The increase in the brutality rate in the criminal justice department, brought great
Police brutality is one of the most serious and divisive human rights violations in the United States and it occurs in every community. The job of a police officer is to maintain public order, prevent, and detect crime. They are engaged in a dangerous and stressful occupation that can involve violent situations that must be controlled. In many of these confrontations with the public it may become necessary for the police to administer force to take control of a situation. Sometimes this force takes the form of hand to hand combat with a suspect who resists being arrested. Not all police officers in communities are good cops. At least once a year the news is covering a story about a person
From the ThinkProgress article, “Edwards, a freshman football player at Mesquite High School, was leaving a house party over the weekend when he was fatally shot by police.… with police officers asserting that Edwards and his companions had backed down the driveway in an aggressive manner towards them. Lee Merritt, an attorney for Edwards’ family, contradicted those claims, telling the Washington Post that the car was fired on without provocation. A medical examiner concluded Edwards was killed with a rifle and ruled the death a homicide, though no charges were issued at the time…. police officers are required to wear body cameras. A review of the footage … There were no weapons involved; there was no aggressive behavior; these were not suspects, Merritt told the New York Times” (Crunden). The police are here to protect and serve the community. However, in recent years unjustified shootings and unnecessary rough treatment throughout the United States has corrupted society’s perception on law enforcement. Violence and brutality against innocent citizens based on stereotypes is not right. There is a racial pattern when it comes to unarmed innocent black men and women being killed in America. If we have laws against officers found guilty of police brutality, they should be held to the same standards as citizens.
Police brutality continues to be a major concern in society. It is a term used to describe the excessive use of physical force, assault, verbal attacks or slurs, and threats by any law enforcement officer. Efforts to police communities, throughout history, have been tainted by brutality and abuse of power to some degree. The term police brutality is commonly used very loosely to any and all forms of police misconduct. When in reality, the excessive force element of police misconduct is what clearly defines police brutality and abuse.
