Plagued by family deaths, financial troubles, and little success in writing, Poe’s life certainly had its fair share of ups and downs, but was he the crazy madman that people rumored him to be? It is a common belief that some of the greatest works of art come from tortured souls who have, by unfortunate circumstances, lived difficult lives. Though the poem is written about a woman named Annabel Lee, it could be possible that Annabel Lee was representative of a woman in Poe’s life, which in turn would make the nameless man of the poem a reflection of Poe himself. There were many women present throughout Poe’s lifetime, but none were as important to him as his wife, and first cousin, Virginia Clemm. Virginia and Poe got married on May 16, 1836 in Richmond, Virginia at the boarding house where Virginia, her mother, and Poe lived (MacLean). At the time, Poe was 27 years old, while Virginia was only at the young age of 13 (MacLean). After getting married, Poe became very devoted to his child-bride. Years and years of being left to face the world alone after his parent’s death’s when he was only a toddler undoubtedly made their love all the more stronger as a result. These disasters help to mold some of the most ominous and intellectually challenging poetry ever written. For the short duration of Poe’s life, he was seen as a literary critic rather than an author. To the modern generation his unbeknown status seems bafflingly inconceivable, considering his now acclaimed publications. Edgar Allan Poe’s writing was very much dictated by his life. The mournful tone of Edgar Allan Poe’s life created his literature; death and all his friends narrated Poe’s life. Edgar Allen Poe was married to Virginia Poe when she was only thirteen years old. They were the happiest couple in the Poe family, they were always laughing and singing together. All this rapidly changed when Virginia became sick, she was later diagnosed with tuberculosis. Tuberculosis was a well known disease to Poe, as many of his loved ones died from tuberculosis, so he knew that his love would not live for long. Upon the diagnosis of Virginia's disease, “Poe began to drink more under the stress of Virginia’s illness.”(CSI: Edgar Allen Poe) He would spend hours at taverns attempting to drink his sorrows away, but alas it did not work, it only caused the poet to become an alcoholic. His heavy drinking habits prove that he would very likely died from alcohol as his consumption level was far too high.
Edgar Allan Poe was known for suspense in his poems giving a feature of a dark feeling and passion for love. In his most prominent poem, Annabel Lee mainly expresses the love affection the narrator has as they were younger up until the day she died, which impacted him tremendously. His life was full of ups and downs involving women whom he had fallen in love with. In the poem Annabel Lee he expresses the strong love he and his beloved Annabel Lee, although she is pronounced dead his love for her, will never die. The poem also mentions that she died due to a wind but originated from the angles envying her. This poem reflects on Edgar Allan Poe life since he has gradually been with numerous women in his lifetime. In essence, Edgar Allan Poe and the poem of Annabel Lee share a common aspect of women's presence in his life which impacts his poetry.

Together the themes, mood, figurative language, rhyme scheme, and rhythm help create the amazing work it is known to be. In my opinion, this was a very powerful poem containing a compelling message. The reader has to face the dejection and sadness of Poe’s life. Personally, I thought that this was going to be a very boring and uneventful poem, but after reading between the lines it made me realize how deep and genuine the overall meaning behind “Annabel Lee” truly is. I thought Poe did a very good job writing this poem, and he made it very intense and intriguing for the reader.
He took his new family with him, and arranged a wedding for him and Virginia. They lied about her age because she was only twelve at the time, and he was twenty-six. The couple loved one-another no matter what the age difference. They would play games and sing. He even taught Virginia algebra and how to play the flute. While they were singing one evening Virginia had a near death experience when blood vessel ruptured in her throat. After this, the couple continued to live happily until Virginia got Tuberculosis in 1842. She was singing one evening and coughed up blood. During this time Poe continued to take care of her, even carrying her up and down the stairs for meals. He started to write The Raven which was him practicing her death. He then went insane with this because of how many times he practiced it. He wrote it next door while he could hear her dying in the room next to him. He then wrote Annabel Lee to forever immortalize her. After she died, Poe did not want to live anymore, but he didn’t believe in suicide. He would get drunk because of this, and the thought that he was like John Allan which haunted him the rest of his life. He did start to drink before her death, but it was not until
