"Poe's Life Reflected in The Raven" Edgar Allen Poe is a well known writer and poet. He wrotemany tales of mystery and macabre. I once read his book, 'The Masqueof the Red Death'. The story was so heavy and dark that I felt scaredwhile reading the book. When I was about to read his poem 'TheRaven', the title already gave me the similar image of 'The Masque ofthe Red Death'. Individuals may have different ideas about raven.Some have a positive images on raven because it is considered to bringgood luck in some countries. He implores the bird totell him the truth that if he can reunite with Lenore in heaven. Thebird gives him the same answer "Nevermore" which is meaningless now.Angry at the bird's answer, he yells at the bird to leave him to whereit came from. The line, 'on this desert land enchanted- on this homeby horror haunted tell me truly' (Line 87-88) shows all he wants isjust a little of hope. I think this part represents best thenarrator's desperate condition.It is very sad and hopeless that the narrator and we allrecognize that the bird's answer conveys that he will never see Lenoreagain even in heaven. He knows that as much as he knows how the birdwill answer to his question whatever it may be. You know, all it cansay is 'Nevermore' I believe that he asks those questions in orderto justify himself. Eventually, he asks the raven to leave, but as weknow its answer is same. In the last stanza, 'the raven is stillthere' implicating the narrator cannot forget Lenore.Poe created a sense of uncertainty and hopelessness by usinga simple repetitions, romantic elements and especially, some symbols.There are many implications in "The Raven". When we figure out thoseimplications, we may understand his poem better. Lenore is the firstimplication but we do not know about her. There is no description ofher other than being a lover of the narrator and is dead. What weknow is that the narrator misses her so much.
