Some may think that the on the evening of the day that he hung Pluto he is awoken by a “cry of a fire.” The man’s house is burns to the ground, along with all his positions. This is not an example of situational irony but rather a coincidence. It is common that situational irony be confused with coincidence. Example would be, a customer at a restaurant steals a tip from off one of the other tables, and later that day he loses his wallet. This is just coincidence, even though he probably deserved to lose his money after he stole someone else’s tip. As it relates to this story the man deserved to have his house burned down, or experience some kind of loss after what he did to the innocent animal. But, this is purely coincidental and not necessarily an example of situational irony. …show more content…
Now perhaps, his anger will be defused. He could come to his senses, and realize that he was out of control. Instead, he buried the axe in his wife’s head, killing her instantly. The irony is the price she had to pay to save the cats life was loose her own. This is another example of situational irony that takes the reader by surprise. It is one thing to kill an animal, but it’s a far more atrocious act to kill a spouse, a person that at one time he felt the deepest love, bond, or connection
In Whale Talk by Chris Crutcher, Rich Marshall loses the basketball tournament to T.J.’s team which makes him lose it. He gets his hunting rifle and goes to the court to try to shoot Heidi while everyone is celebrating T.J.’s team’s victory. But T.J.’s Dad leaps in front of Heidi and catches the bullet for her (287). This example of violence shows situational irony because when reading you think Heidi is going to get shot but then T.J.’s Dad jumps in front of Heidi and gets shot
In the story “Invitation to Murder” by Josh Pachter, situational irony is presented in a number of examples. Situational irony is when what is expected in the plot, does not occur. Mrs. Eleanor Abbott invited twelve of the nation’s most accomplished detectives to witness a murder. The detectives were invited to her home in New York City. When the men entered the room, a table mounted in the center of the room had multiple weapons lying on it. The weapons included an amber bottle with a skull and crossbones, a knife, a gun, and a wire. The men waited until the party commenced.
Situational irony is when the opposite of what is expected happens. An example of situational irony in the episode is when peter brings home boxes filled with fake lottery tickets that he purchased by taking a second mortgage out on the house. After searching through enormous piles of fake tickets peter explains to the family they were all fake and it was a test. Brian, the dog, criticizes the lottery saying, “Peter this is idiotic. Don’t you know the odds of winning are like a hundred million to one. The lottery is just a tax on stupid people” (MacFarlane, Seth). Peter then brings out a final box and the first ticket Brian picks up is the winning ticket. This is situational irony because after Brian explains that chances of winning the lottery are very slim and only stupid people succumb to the lottos promises of fortune, he finds the winning ticket. The directors reason for including this segment is to hint at the lottery being a scam and having unfair

Irony is portrayed by Richard Connell in many ways.To begin, when Mr.Rainsford exclaimed that he did not not care about the animal’s feelings in the beginning of the story, but in the end he felt bad and understood what an animal being hunted felt. Mr.Rainsford did not like to be hunted, but didn’t care what the animal felt until he became the animal and therefore this shows irony. “"For the hunter," amended Whitney. "Not for the jaguar.""Don't talk rot, Whitney," said Rainsford. "You're a big-game hunter, not a philosopher.
In dramatic Irony, occurs when the readers are aware about what is going to happen, but the characters do not have any clue about what is going on. In “The Black Cat”, the story begins with the main character sentenced to death, but with one story to tell. The Irony here is that he was not aware about how his life was going to change. In the beginning he is describing how happy was his childhood and how much he loved his pets. In the second paragraph of the story the main character describes his personality as a child in the first sentence “From my infancy I was noted for the docility and humanity of my disposition. My tenderness of heart was even so conspicuous as to make me the jest of my companions” (3). He was a lovely child with an uncertain future. Another irony finds it on the story is how he describes the fidelity and love that the man can own “There is something in the unselfish and self-sacrificing love of a brute, which goes directly to the heart of him who has had frequent occasion to test the paltry friendship and gossamer fidelity of mere Man” (3-4). When the story is progressing he is transforming to a violent man without any act of compassion towards his faithful pet, which actually represented faithfulness. He is represented himself as a child with a lovely personality, but he is not aware that the lovely child was going to transform in an alcoholic man with a violent personality willing to kill mercilessly.

Just as it appears that he is going to succeed in his takeover, the Handicapper General came into the studio. ”She fired twice, and the Emperor and the Empress were dead before they hit the floor.” This is not the expected outcome and creates irony in this situation.
