The Doctor in Spite of Himself:
The Doctor in Spite of Himself is a play that I had previously studied in France like many of Molière’s plays. I thought that it was ironic for me to go see the play for the first time in theatre in the United States. I was really looking forward to hear how the actors would pronounce the characters’ French names, which are rather exotic even for me. I think that because I had previously studied Molière’s work in class, I was expecting this play to be performed in a much more traditional style. I was a little disconcerted at first when seeing the actors performing a more modern version than what I had in mind. I ended up liking what Arne Zaslove has done with the play. In my opinion, modernizing it a

I was not expecting the costumes to be as eccentric. Even though they were matching the characters’ role and personality, I felt like they were too wacky and did not go well with the play.
Throughout the play, I enjoyed the role of music used to set a comic atmosphere and replace the dialogs during comic scenes (e.g. when they chase each other around). I also thought that they made a good use of light to indicate the moment of the day the scene was happening or to set the atmosphere of the scene (e.g. pink colour during the romantic moments). Lastly, I liked the way the play ended. Even though it was a little messy with everyone running after each other off and on stage, and this policeman coming out of nowhere, which really surprised me; I couldn’t think of a better way to end the play.
Overall I think the actors and everyone involved in the making of this play did a very good job, even though I liked the performance of some actors better than others. The fact that this translation of the play was a more modern version original play made it more fun to watch according to me. Unfortunately, the fact that I was not able to fully understand the actors’ dialog throughout the play made it less entertaining and agreeable for me to
of the The director, Larry Raben excellently executed the performance. The actors put their full heart and soul into the characters, the play moves smoothly, and the costumes were more than I expected. Because of the acting, design, and lighting this performance must be seen.
Therefore the costuming in this play was outstanding. There was a lot of effort put into making the costumes for this play. I enjoyed the three musketeer
At first, I was not as enthusiastic about the movie as I now am. In fact, upon first hearing of the film, watching a French play sounded completely unappealing to me; however, the English subtitles allowed you to accurately follow along with the story and did not at all take away from the dramatic
The costumes, were just normal clothing but yet fit all of the characters extraordinarily well. Jean’s outfit was a little different and comfy, while Gordan was placed in a eye catching, obnoxious suit. Dwight, played by Eddie Castle, was dressed perfectly. Without even hearing him speak, you know his personality, Underappreciated and soft spoken, awkward. Obviously, all of the costumes were great and well suited for they characters but these are the outfits that stuck out to me the
The crew of the play or the actors that played backstage characters wore black which is what they wear. Also I liked how the officer had the bad cop shades which helped the character to be taken more seriously. As for the actor who played Gary, I believe his costumes fit the play for Hamlet including the spear. It was hilarious to see that his crotch spot kept getting bigger just because there were small references about it throughout the play. As well it got into the characters faces when he was practicing his lines supposedly. As to props on stage, there were a lot of props that fit into the Hamlet play including the skull because Hamlet can’t be complete without the well know skull.
The set was very simple so it didn’t distract from the characters. There were only a few set pieces that went in the middle of the stage so the set was mainly the backdrop, which was really pretty and had a cool design. The lighting was cool. I really liked the first scene when it was dark and there was smoke. It set up the eerie theme in the play. Although it was live, everything ran smoothly and if anyone messed up, they played it off really well. The actors were great. They all fit their role perfectly and played their part well. I think there was a good audience. We all laughed and clapped when we were supposed to.
The actors in the play were very remarkable and true to their roles. Each actor was cohesive in portraying realistic and natural emotions as well as humor in the play. There was a particular scene in the play that was very emotional, causing me to tear up. In this scene, Gladys is sitting in her kitchen crying, feeling lost and confused about her own existence. Not only was this scene emotionally touching, but it helps the audience to connect with the characters on an emotional level. The comedy in the play consisted of satire and was effective in keeping the audience interested and entertained throughout the play, with lots of laughter. The acting certainly contributed to the goal of the play, making it a successful
By the end of the play, I could see sweat dripping from each actor and actress. Not once did I have to lean forward in my seat to hear, nor did I look away to observe others. I did not have to look at the audience because I could hear their laughter, and knew they were hooked, just like me. The whole time I was captured by the performer’s talent and ability to act so quickly. I could even see the performers spitting from their mouths when trying to articulate. One thing that makes an actress and actor great, is versatility. Most definitely where these performers convincing, it was not until the end that I realized one performer played several roles throughout the play. It may be because of the amazing costumes, or the performers where just that
The sound was another very important aspect and it was well incorporated into the play. I noticed that throughout the play sound was very frequent. The music went really well with the singing from Dot in both acts. The effects helped set the tone and helped portray what was going on. The sound also helped set the mood of each scene. When music would come on you tell whether the part was supposed to happy or sad. For example, when the wall painting with kids in it came out annoying music was being played portraying that they were causing a disturbance to the other
Overall, I feel the play was well written and the characters were very good with getting the point across most of the time. I would go see the play again just maybe get more of a backstory on what was going on during that
The set was well made and fit the time period quite nicely, but I could not help but feel it could have used a few more props to give the audience a better sense of immersion. It was often hard to tell where the scene was, or if the characters had changed scenes or not. Using more props would also give more distinction between events and places making the overall scenes more memorable. One of the strongest points in the play was the costumes. They all were extraordinarily well made, and
The set was changed very effectively throughout the play. I liked how every time the curtains were put down, there was a either a solo or miniature performance in the front or just music to distract the audience for a quick second while the set was being rearranged. I felt like that helped the play flow because it didn’t stop at every scene, distract the audience, and unengage them from the play. I liked the
The acting of the play was amazing it seemed liked every single person knew their lines perfectly. They wore the clothes responding to their part in the play such as the soldiers looked like soldiers and Evita looked like Evita from 70 years ago. The acting for Evita stood out more because she spoke louder and more clearly making her more noticeable making the acting better. The actors also portrayed
Directing a play all on my own was not something I had ever done before. What most people don’t understand is that before the rehearsal process begins, the director has about three weeks of work to complete, including: reading and choosing a play from the thousands of choices there are, ordering and paying for the scripts, auditioning and casting the actors, and creating a vision for the play. Once the upwards of 30 actors had auditioned over the course of two days, casting began and I spent about a week giving them roles and then switching them around, then getting the cast list approved but actually having to move more people around. The actors were getting antsy and the ones who could, would text and call me asking if I had finished. One
Starting with my dislike of the production, it came to my attention that some parts of the play where Sofi, the new girl who was always getting blamed whenever her boss did not like how she would type her letters in Spanish. In my opinion, the boss should not have gotten after for that reason since there are some families who do not always read everything in English. She initially thought if they have a Spanish last name she was being consider it on typing theirs in Spanish rather them suffer in trying to find out what was said in English. Another thing that I didn’t find interesting was when the all the girls in the office had a night out talking about their guys who were serving when they had a job to fulfill instead of Sofi. I had saw how much Sofi was working hard on her letters trying to impress her
