Jillian Page 10-20-16 Mr. Blevins 8th hour Biotechnology 12 Plant and Animal Viruses Research Paper With the vast amount of animal and plant species, there are, of course, vast amounts of viruses that can affect them. From Canine Parvovirus to Cucumber Mosaic virus, the virology is extensive. Luckily because of modern science and innovations in biotechnology, these viruses are being prevented and eradicated so plants and animals can have long, healthy lives. Canine Parvovirus is an animal disease that comes in two different forms, the most common being the intestinal form. It is most prominent in bigger dogs such as Rottweilers, Dobermans, Labradors, and German Shepherds, although all dogs can contract it. The spreading of the disease is almost always caused by an altered strain of Canine Parvovirus. The disease is most commonly transmitted through direct contact with an infected dog. It can also be transmitted through the fecal-oral route. Large concentrations of the disease can be found in a dog’s stool, so when a dog sniffs an infected dog’s stool, it will immediately contract the virus. The disease can live in soil for up to a year, making it very easy to contract. It is also resistant to most cleaning products, except for bleach. It is important to observe the symptoms in dogs early on to increase the chance of survival. The vast amount symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, lack of appetite, lethargy, fever, and the tissues around the eyes and
This article covers the Seneca Valley Virus (SVV-001) as a hopeful for an oncolytic treatment of certain cancer types. More specifically those with neuroendocrine properties such as rhabdomyosarcoma, Wilms tumor, glioblastoma, neuroblastoma, and adult small-cell lung cancer. Each of which effect smooth/skeletal muscle cells, kidneys/adrenal glands (mainly in children), astrocytes of the brain, nerve cells of a fetus, and lung cells in adults respectively. The virus was discovered by accident in a contaminated cell culture that contained bovine serum to promote growth. The virus was later discovered to be almost exclusively found in farm animals such as cows and pigs, due to the presence of neutralizing antibodies that were later to only ever have been found in one human sample. Just as important as that, the virus only targets the cells of the above-mentioned cancers/tumors, is a self-replicating RNA virus, and its inability to infect other cells in the body all come together to result in the lysis of these specific cancer cells. These properties alone give great hope for SVV-001 as a treatment for those infected by these diseases, and prompted for more research into its medicinal possibilities.
One of the most complex and unexplored disease causing agents are viruses. They are known to be able to infect a wide array of organisms, from plants and animals, to bacteria and fungi. Essentially, anything that is living is capable of being infected with a virus. Once the host's cell is infected, the viruses' goal is to produce more viruses which will infect neighboring cells to continue the cycle.
Nipah virus, Arena Virus and Francisella tularensis are bioterrorism agents. They work in various ways to harm the host. Francisella tularenis is considered a Tier 1 bioterrorism agent and Nipah virus is an overlap select agent that affects humans and agriculture both. They have been harmful in the past. Though, Nipah virus is a newer virus than the other two. This review will focus on their emergence, pathogenicity and symptoms of the diseases they cause.
Many people are infected each year by what is known as the stomach flu. Little do you know that the stomach flu is part of the Norwalk Virus. Norwalk Virus also known as Norovirus is an extremely contagious virus. This virus causes your intestines and or stomach to inflame which leads you to have stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, and puking.
Introduction: Over time we come to realize a lot of things we have to live life with right under our nose and right at our door step. one of the worst and on going things we have to deal with are Viruses. there are a wide range of different types of viruses, from ones that can kill you ,to ones that we don't even know we have, some are contagious , and some are not, and also the dreaded air borne viruses. One virus that is not commonly mentioned is Valley Fever.
Molluscum Contagiosum is a skin infection that is caused by the Molluscum Contagiosum virus. The virus causes benign, elevated skin lesions that can spread to other parts of the body when touched. The incubation period for the virus is anywhere between two and seven weeks. This virus encodes proteins that prevent programmed cell death, inflammation, and immune cell recruitment. The Molluscum Contagiosum virus doesn’t present any physical harm to the body; it’s more psychological damage that is done due to the unsightly lesions that are left on the skin. This disease can affect both children and adults, though it is more common in children.
Many before have questioned the relationships between Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPLV) and Canine Parvovirus (CPV), or whether there are any at all. Multiple different studies have been conducted to determine whether there are any links amongst CPV and FPLV. The studies being reviewed will touch on the following: the evolution of CPV, the connection between hosts, the genetics and the antigenic characteristics among them. “CPV and FPLV are known to be closely related viruses genetically and biologically…” (Horiuchi,
Parvovirus B19 is a virus that commonly infects humans. The mode of transmission is through droplet infection. The infection also can be spread through contact, as well as transmitted from a woman to her fetus. The most common illness caused by B19 is the fifth disease, which is a mild, rash illness occurred mostly in children. About 20 percent of children with this disease has no symptoms. But, in others, early in the infection there may be cold like symptoms. Two to five days later the child typically develops a slapped cheek rash on the face and a lacy red rash on the trunk and limbs. The child may not feel very sick even though the rash is itchy. The rash disappears after seven to ten days, but it can come and go for several weeks, especially
The Southern bean mosaic virus is a virus transmitting to original host via a saliva of Mexican bean beetle vector. Not only the Mexican bean beetle carry the viruses, however, it is one of impotent insects cause massive economic injury level due to it can eat the leaves, flowers, and pods, which leads to huge damage in the various bean plants1. The main host of this insect is bean plants and it feeds on various species of the soybean, for instance, haseolus vulgaris L. and Phaseolus lunatus L1.
The article starts “The human genome is three billion letters long. About 240 million letters of it, scientists estimate, is viral. Yes, eight percent of human DNA comes from ancient viruses that once infected our ancestors.” These two statements instantly captures the audience attention and draws them into wanting to know where exactly the author is heading.
An invisible organism enters your body. It penetrates into your tissues and then takes over the machinery in your own cells to make more copies of itself. This tiny infiltrator works silently, producing thousands of these clones that fill up the cell and cause it to explode. The clones mercilessly continue the process of invading, taking over and destroying cells. The result might be a minor inconvenience to you as the host, or it could result in a slow or rapid death. It depends only on which variant of this unwanted infiltrator overcomes your body’s defenses. There are cures to wipe out some types of these invisible intruders, but others are so difficult to eradicate or so readily adaptable, that the world’s greatest scientists
No, doctors haven't found a cure for Marburg, but they treat this fever with antibodies.Doctors state that antibodies fight against Marburg very welly. Even though there isn't a cure infected “patients are given supported hospital care” (Marburg virus disease history,sThe CDC states that “Marburg is a rare severe Hemorrhagic fever”(Marburg Hemorrhagic fever). Marburg was first recognized in 1967 in Germany.Fruit bats maybe the reservoir of Marburg. The first people who caught Marburg we’re exposed to monkeys. Scientist say that this virus is transmitted through direct contact of body fluids.Marburg has countless amounts of symptoms, has no cures, and kills almost every host (CDC).
Every single microscope was used to try and figure out the mystery of the bamboo mosaic virus; an incredibly deadly infection to plants that causes widespread crop loss every year. The structure is flexible, being able to live in nearly every deadly environment, making it incredibly difficult to solve. Since the virus is so small and adaptable, it cannot be seen under a simple light microscope or even a high-quality microscope that uses X-rays to look within the virus. After denying all of the microscopes, scientists decided to place the bamboo mosaic virus under the strongest known microscope on earth, the Titan Crios. Because the enormous microscope can be easily disturbed by small vibrations, it has to be kept in a concrete cell, deep underground
“Pathogens are microscopic organisms that cause or have the potential to cause disease.” (Bailey, 2017). Pathogens are tiny organisms that have the ability or power to cause diseases. The pathogens are the root factor of different kind of disease both infectious and non-infectious. All microbes are pathogenic. The human body contains several species of bacteria, fungi, and protozoa which aid to maintain functions like digestion and immune system. The pathogenic organism will survive and multiplies itself. The working principle of pathogen is to infect a host and evade the immune responses, the it will start reproducing within the host and finally it escapes to another host. The pathogens are bacteria, viruses, amoeba, plasmodium, fungi, parasitic worms and prions.
If you were asked what would be the worst thing your dog could attract most people would say cancer or Parvovirus. Parvo is considered one of the most dangerous viruses your pet can obtain if not currently vaccinated. In this passage you will learn all about parvo, how to prevent it treatments, and who gets pravo.
