Levonorgestrel is a female hormone that prevents the women from not ovulating and is used in many birth control pills for years (Plan B One Step, 2015). Plan B is a drug that contains a high dose of levonorgestrel (Plan B One Step, 2015). This is because Plan B is used as a type of emergency contraceptive (WebMD, 2016). Plan B is used to prevent pregnancy if a woman has had unprotected sex. It is also used if there is failure of another form of birth control, such condom breaking or missing more than two birth control pills (Drugs.com, 2016). “Plan B One-Step is not the same as RU-486, which is an abortion pill. It does not cause a miscarriage or abortion” (WebMD, 2016). Plan B will not work if a women is already pregnant when it is taken.
Plan B is effective if the first dose is taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex (Drugs.com, 2016). The second dose must be taken 12 hours after the first. If the first dose is taken within the 72 hours, this can reduce the risk pregnancy by up to 89%. If Plan B is taken within 24 hour it is 95% effective (WebMD, 2016). Plan B is also available over the counter at pharmacies (Women's Med, 2016). Plan B does not affect a women’s ability in the future if she wants to get pregnant (Teen Health Source, n.d.). Another advantage with Plan B is that there is no prescription or identification required. There is also not a age restriction to get Plan B (Plan B One Step, 2015).Some disadvantages is Plan B you are not protected from sexually transmitted infections (STIs). If pregnancy does occur there is a slightly higher risk of the pregnancy being ectopic. Plan B may also be less effective if the women weighs more than 165 pounds or 65 kilograms (Teen Health Source, n.d.).
