On February 14, 2013, Reeva Steenkamp was killed by a burst of gunfire through Oscar Pistorius’s bathroom door. He thought his girlfriend to be an intruder in his home. Proven to be innocent, many people believe that Mr. Pistorious got off a little too easy. As an infant, Mr. Pistorious had his legs amputated due to being born without fibulas. But never let that keep him from rising above and beyond. As a disabled Olympic athlete, Oscar Pistorious was a national hero and an international star for the way that he overcame his disability to compete against able-bodied runners as well as disabled ones. While testifying during trial, Pistorius changed his story and his defense from previous statements read at his bail hearing and the start of his trial; adding the last words he exchanged with Steenkamp and that he heard the lavatory door slam, and first saying he fired at an intruder, then that he fired by mistake (Oscar 1). This man knew exactly what he was doing when he killed his girlfriend, and whether he feels bad about it or not isn’t up to the law to decide. Pistorius fatally shot Steenkamp in his home in the early hours of Feb. 14, 2013. He said he mistook her for an intruder, while the prosecution said he killed her intentionally after an argument. While he was not charged with homicide (which he should have been), he was charged with a manslaughter. The sentence for a culpable homicide (manslaughter) conviction is at the judge's discretion, and it can range from a suspended sentence and a fine to up to a Stephens 5 maximum of 15 years in prison. Sentencing was expected to be announced at a later date
