Founded in Egypt and China, massages were used as a way to relieve pain, heal injuries, and prevent and cure diseases. Written records found in Egypt and China date back to around 2500 BC, thus allowing us to take a deeper look into the believed benefits. The egyptian culture is credited to a form of massage known as Reflexology. Reflexology can be defined as applying pressure to certain areas of the hands and feet, benefiting the patient's internal organs and well-being.
Physical Therapy started to be used and gain recognition when the Army soldiers were returning to the United States after World War Two. Men were returning back to the States with the effects of polio, a disease that weakens the body's muscles, and even has the potential
Establish relationships with your suppliers and employees starts with good and regular communication. It can be taken further by having group activities or teams. Also by establishing mutually beneficial achievable goals.
Early cave drawings have been discovered depicting people giving and receiving massages, and there is evidence dating back 3000 years, when the Chinese recognised massage for its healing capabilities. Ancient Romans, Greeks and Egyptians have also been known to use massage. Those who could afford to do so were rubbed with olive oil after they bathed to help keep their joints and skin supple.
Reflexology is an ancient method of healing that originated in Egypt and the Orient. More than four thousand years ago, man discovered this treatment for imbalance, and recorded their discovery in drawings on cave walls. It is suggested that reflexology evolved from acupuncture and acupressure. Reflexology flourished in the United Kingdom in the nineteenth

The Physical Therapy profession has been around for many years. “The American physical therapy profession emerged during and following the First World War as a result of the need for trained providers of therapeutic exercise – who practiced under the supervision of a physician – for the rehabilitation of injured soldiers.” (Wrynn, 2014) The profession over the past few years has had a huge expansion in need. “Physical therapists (PTs) provide services that help restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities of patients with injuries or disease. (Physical Therapist, 2012) Physical Therapist work with the patient to make sure
As a PTA I have been given a breath of knowledge in regard to the profession of physical therapy. However, I am not satisfied with this breath of knowledge. I yearn for the opportunity to gain a further understanding in terms of “how and why” physical therapy is successful at restoring function to individuals seeking
Massage is a very common form of therapy for all sorts of things, from stress to chronic pain. There have been numerous studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of massage in helping to manage patients’ pain while keeping them off medication. The benefit of this type of treatment is pain relief through manipulation of the body. The mechanism of action is, once again, unknown, but it is thought to be related to stimulation of muscles and the blood flow being increased. There are
Physical therapy is the treatment of different physical issues by using physical methods rather than drugs or surgery. Physical therapy originally began in 1921 as the American Women’s Physical Association. The association was led by President Mary McMillan. An executive committee of elected officers governed the association. The executive committee included 274 charter members. In 1992, they changed their name to the American Physiotherapy Association (APA), and men were admitted. Within the 1930s, APA introduced its first “Code of Ethics”, and membership was just under 1,000. During WWII and the Polio epidemic (1940s-1950s) physical therapists were in high demand. As a result, membership grew to 8,000 and the number of education programs in the US increased from 16 to 39. In the late 40s the APA changed their name to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA)
Physical therapy takes a more direct pathway towards a more specific problem with the human body. Physical therapy is a rehabilitation that works towards a goal of helping patients maintain, improve, or recover their physical abilities, most often times after an accident causing traumatic injury or arthritis (Mayo School of Health Sciences). Patients of a physical therapist often come in solely for the purpose of regaining their movement, not the health aspect involved behind it. Most patients of this therapist have suffered sports injuries, traumatic accidents, over even simply a problem of weakening with age such as those who suffer arthritis or other weakening of the joints and muscles. With step by step sessions focusing purely on strengthening the muscles and joints required to perform the movement functions, the patients rebuild their way from movement with pain, to no pain or suffering involved in everyday activities. When a patient begins therapy, they more or less begin with baby steps such as stretches and hydrotherapy to allow the body to relearn the movements without pain (What is Physical Therapy?). As the patient increases in strength
Physical therapy has a long and changing history. As a medical treatment, physical therapy goes back as far as cave dwellers, but was not considered a profession until World War I. During ancient times many places, worshiped the sun for its healing powers. Places such as Germany who worshiped and also set up fields where people lay in the sun to get well. Different therapies that were used throughout history contributed to physical therapy as a profession, hyper therapy, cryotherapy, hydrotherapy, and electrotherapy. As a polio epidemic swept the United States from 1915 through 1917, many therapists services were requested to help victims recover from the effects of this devastating illness. By the end of World War II, physical therapy was a widely accepted therapeutic practice. Near the 19th century in Britain, physical therapy was established, and all of the people being trained were women. The first
The technology used in pediatric physical therapy has changed the most over the years. Today, the use for technology is unbelievable. Hospitals and practices are filled with cutting edge technology that assist the patients in their healing journey. There are some things that therapists cannot help the patients with as well as the technology. When pediatric physical therapy first became popular in the 1920’s, all the technology they had were small pools to help eliminate the pain the children were experiencing. Children with polio were almost always put in small pools. They would usually float around for a while and sometimes do exercises with their arms and legs to help build muscle. Even with the advanced technology used today, pools and Jacuzzis are still
Massage therapy has been used for thousands of years as a form of medical care, the earliest time of use dates back to 2,700 BC from a Chinese book called “The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine”. The Chinese used this form of treatment for a person with full paralysis or an illness from fever and chills. History shows that Greek and Roman doctors also used massage therapy, as Julius Caesar had a disease called neuralgia and used massages on a daily basis to treat his condition. Hippocrates who was known as the Father of Western Medicine felt that massage therapy was effective, as it could loosen or bind a problematic joint. Massage therapy is also found in the history of Indian Medicine as the Indians used and still use
