A group consisting of parents and children living together in a household, is a definition of a family. Many would argue the definition because of how broad it is, or for how narrow-minded it is. That is exactly how a family works, everyone is entitled to their opinion but most of them will not matter. What if people with those titles live together, but do not care or love one another, are they still a family? So many things can be said about a family, especially the Bundren’s in the novel, As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner. The family is made up of a father, mother, and five children. They fall under the definition of a family, but are broken. The relationships between the father Anse, the mother Addie, the sons Cash, Darl, Jewel, Vardaman, and the only daughter Dewey Dell are all very different from each other. In As I lay Dying, the death of Addie and the dysfunction of the family dynamics, leads to the downfall of each character.

Derick is a sixty-one-year-old male who lives with his wife and two of their three daughters, ages 21 and 17. Derick was the third of four children. His oldest brother is eleven years older than him, his sister is eight years older than him, and his youngest brother is nine years younger than him. His Dad, Edwin, passed away 15 years ago and his Mom, Rosemary, is 90 years old. Until five months ago, she, lived alone, worked full-time, and drove herself to work and to Northern California to visit her sister. Five months ago, she fell and broke her neck. The family has had to pull their resources together to take care of her. Unfortunately, it has also triggered Derick and the other siblings to re-live the domestic violence from their childhood. Doug has suffered may symptoms of PTSD from the trauma he suffered while trying to defend his mother and younger brother from a violent, alcoholic father.

Using Gordon’s functional health patterns to assess a family will guide the nurse in developing a comprehensive nursing assessment that is holistic in nature. Gordon’s functional health patterns are founded on 11 principles that are incorporated within the nursing practice. These 11 principles serve as a framework for a thorough nursing assessment in which to build a holistic and individual family care plan (Grand Canyon University, 2011). The author has developed family-focused questions for each of the 11 principles and utilized these questions as a tool to assess her own family. All families are complex; however, I have been told that my family is so large that they can’t even keep up with where we all come from. What I mean by this is I come from a divorced family where both of my parents have remarried and with this, I have step and adopted brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, and grandmothers and grandfathers that I love very much. Nonetheless, for the purpose of this family health behavior report, I have gathered the health information from my direct, biological family members in order to get a good representation of the genetic health issues that could affect me and my future children. As a result, I reconnected with family members that live all over the United States and found that my family is not shy about telling everything about their physical and mental health and habits including their health issues, eating habits, and even their addictions. The following is a summary of the health information I gathered from my family members.

Family health assessment is a collection of subjective and objective data of a health status of the family. Mr. and Mrs. Schulz were interviewed for the family health assessment. Schulz family has four members in the family. They are dad-Michael, mom-Lori, and two daughters Jessica and Rachel. Gordon’s functional health patterns will be used to do the family health assessment. Gordons 11 functional health patterns are health perception-health management pattern, Nutritional-metabolic pattern, elimination pattern, activity-exercise pattern, sleep-rest pattern, cognitive-perceptual pattern, self-perception-self-concept pattern, role-relationships pattern, sexuality-reproductive pattern, coping-stress tolerance pattern, and value belief pattern (Edelman & Kudzma, 2014, p. 184). This paper will summarize the findings for each functional health pattern of Schulz family, and present three wellness and family nursing diagnosis at the end.

A family health assessment is a significant instrument in conveying a health care plan for a family. This paper will discuss the nurse’s role in family assessment and how this task is performed. By the use of family focused open ended questions, 11 functional health patterns were covered. The health patterns were values and health perception, nutrition, sleep and rest, elimination, activities and exercise, cognitive, sensory-perception, self-perception, role relationship, sexuality, and coping. This principle is known as the Gordon’s functional health patterns. Family health assessment defines the assessment of actual and potential problems of individuals (Gordon, 1994). This assessment tool included 11 systematic principles for data collection of the family, and assists the nurses to develop a nursing diagnosis and appropriate interventions. Using Gordon’s functional health patterns, this paper will summarize the findings of each health pattern as well as the family based nursing diagnosis of each assessment. This paper will also discuss different health promotion strategies along with web-based resources, also including a system based theory guide in family assessment.

The health of a family is a vital part of how that family interacts with one another and how each individual of the family will function in society, later teaching their children about a healthy lifestyle or lack thereof. First, I asked her if there was a common cause of death on her side that she knows of. Sadly, that answer was yes. There has been a lot of heart issues that have led to death on my maternal side.
