Physical Geography

Uruguay is a country in South America. It borders the South Atlantic Ocean, to the west is Argentina, and northeast is Brazil. To the south it lies opposite to the Río de la Plata, which is a wide estuary opening out to the South Atlantic. The capital Montevideo, which is also a major port, is on the edge of the Río de la Plata (see Figure one). Uruguay is the smallest Spanish-speaking country in South America. It is a water-rich land, and consists of three systems of rivers. One of these rivers is Río Uruguay, which forms the border with Argentina and is bounded by low banks. The most important of the three rivers, which also happens to be the longest, is Río Negro. Río Negro travels across the northeast of the country to the west, and empties into Río Uruguay. Uruguay has plains on the eastern, western, and southern edges. Along with all of the flat plains, there are ranges of low hills. Due to the large amount of water in the country, there is often high humidity and fog. The rainfall in the country is evenly distributed throughout. On average, Montevideo gets 950 millimeters of rainfall annually. The rainfall in this area results from the passing of cold fronts in the winter, and thunderstorms are frequent in the summer.
