Phone Call Texts can be interpreted in many different ways. Phone Call by Berton Roueche, is a short story drama about a delivery man whose truck breaks down and gets into a bit of trouble. This short story is a good example of how you can find two very different readings in the same story. The dominant reading is that the male is innocent and the woman is just paranoid and overly suspicious. The resistant reading is that the female is innocent and has the right to be suspicious and the male is guilty with the intent to take advantage of her. In the dominant reading it is told through a first person male point of view, this positions the audience to believe what the man is saying. The dominant reading portrays the man as an innocent and …show more content…
It is then that the woman realises that there is something strange and starts to become suspicious of the man, she starts to question him and letting him know she is aware of the little things he has done that seem strange. “I thought you said you had a truck?” she said “I don’t see any truck out there.” The woman starts to act cautious and keeps checking up on him. The woman gets fearful and she challenges him aggressively. ‘She reached in one of
She tells the man that her mother likes him but just worries about her a lot because she thinks that her daughter is fragile. “Especially now, because I’ve had some close calls” she says and when the man asks what kind of close calls the girl says,
As he stepped in front of her he asked the maid if he can see a woman named miss ellen, and he asked her in the same way he practiced saying it at home. The wind was pushing so strongly into his face that he thought he went deaf for a brief moment. The maid answered saying, “ Dont know if she's at home”. As she said that he was trying to convince her that she needed to see him and that she would regret not seeing him.
“Have you done this often?” ‘Every night for years’. The police car sat in the center of the street with his radio throat faintly humming. ‘Well, Mr. Mead’ it said. ‘Is that all?’ he asked politely. ‘Yes’ said the voice. ‘Here!’ There was a sigh, a pop. The back door of the police car sprang wide. ‘Get in.’ ‘Wait a minute, I haven’t done anything.’ (The Pedestrian)
In order to achieve effectiveness within one's writing, the author must change the way the audience views the piece. In the speeches, “A Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King Jr. and “Sinners in the Hand of God” written and spoken by Jonathan Edwards, an extreme Puritan, they both dramatically affect the audience in a way that moves their perception. While scripting these pieces, both authors have to use a multitude of stylistic techniques to achieve the effect they have been longing for initially. Both King and Edwards use specific approaches to affect their audience, but in order to get a more in depth perceptive one must analyze both pieces and their techniques.
At dawn, her father has fished through the girl’s pocket for the key to the secret cupboard. He took it and went to talk to the policeman... He explained the situation. He was trying to remain calm, the girl could tell, but he was at his breaking point. He had to go and get his four-year-old son, he told the man, He would return here, he promised… The father urged the man to come with him, to accompany him, he was just going to get the boy and come back, immediately. The policeman ordered him out of the way. (45)
As I read more and more the more I get confused. It is just the way the author writes, that throws me off track. I did realize that there was little stories throughout the passages that I found interesting, but it just skips around so much. There are many different ways people can write. It all depends on what you like to read. I think that if I started to read these kinds of things on a daily basis I would start to learn how to read them better.
The characters tone of during the first two paragraphs of the book shows that the character is very straight forward towards the audience. He doesn’t want the audience to be unknown by what is happening. Such as in the book he says “. And, let me confess, you feel that way most of the time. You ache with the need to convince yourself that you do exist in the real world, that you're a part of all the sound and anguish, and you strike out with your fists, you curse and you swear to make them recognize you. And, alas, it's seldom successful.”(PAGE 3). This quote helps the reader learn about the the truth that the narrator is trying to tell, showing the reader that his darkest secret is the very truth
Through the main character, the author shows the theme that pride can get the best of people and can cause them to deceive themselves. The author, James Hurst, starts to imply the main theme in the beginning of the story. He starts to explain the narrator's which in this case is one of the main characters.
The changes in point of view reinforce the themes of his novel by providing an insight into the characters mind and that the truth isn’t always true.
The important thing in the reader response theory is the interpretive of the readers itself, rather than the author or even the text. The theory gives the competence to the reader to critic the text, however with the condition the readers have the evidence or research from other people toward the critic. The way of their interpretation may reveal their identity, because the reader gives the critic depends on their knowledge and experience (Philip Goldstein, 2005). Everyone has their own perspective toward anything, especially for the literary works. Each of people perspective is unique. That is why reader response was created. The theory is about the transaction between the writer and the reader. The writer composed a meaningful text, whereas the reader composed an interpreted meaning of the text. Reader response is not about destroying the writer’s idea, but it is more constructing the work itself (Louise M. Rosenblatt, 1988).
The ambiguous approach to developing the theme not only makes the story, it also adds to the reading experience. As the story progresses the reader begins to discover the values of the characters based on the dialogue between characters about the notion of a good man. The reader can
The chosen interpretation rests on how the narrator’s character is analyzed through her hidden thoughts and concerns. In the following paragraphs, we’ll look at how the author, Gilman, uses indirect characterization to reveal the narrator’s character through emphasis on the narrator’s thoughts.

Estimate the effect on income of each of the options Rowe has suggested if Bradley estimates as follows:
The epistolary structure of the novel and the subsequent use of multiple narrators forces the reader to judge for themselves what is true and what is dramatized from the letters. Due to the story being retold from the point of view of Victor the reader is more likely to understand why Victor and Walton deem the monster a malevolent and insensitive brute.
