Philosophy and Religion:

1. Before Humanities 210, how would you have described the philosophies/religions that influenced your processes for decision making, thinking, and developing preferences? How would you describe your level of conscious choice and commitment to these philosophies/religions? What helped form or develop the belief in that philosophy/religion?
Answer: Growing up in a United Methodist Christian home, daily influences came from my parents and my siblings. Going to a Christian Reformed private school, I was also influenced daily by those Christian beliefs. Both of these Christian influences are very similar yet they have a few minor differences. Without knowing that there are philosophies that try to explain the idea of Skepticism, I have always tried to not claim anything or accept anything that could not be proven to me in some way (Detrick, “In Search of Truth: Western Philosophy”). This can be a problem for some people when it comes to religion, but the facts that have been produced, have me able to accept the idea of Christianity in most instances. There are only a few genres I choose not to listen to at all; otherwise, I can enjoy almost any form of music. I like country music because that is what my Dad always listened to. Although what was his country music was and what mine is today, is much different, my choice roots from my childhood exposure (Detrick, “Music History”).
