Accountability and Clear Communication
A leader must also communicate clearly and integrate accountability within the youth organizing field in order to effectively create sustainable positive change in achieving a common goal. Prior to taking this course, I neglected to acknowledge this key component out of a general fear that holding people accountable may cause my students to dislike me and thus if they dislike me they would not follow. However, I have seen in the Peterson Case the fallacy of this in the ways in which he failed to hold his team accountable and ultimately his team was less successful in reaching their common goal under his leadership because of it. To accomplish accountability, I would like to begin imparting Charlotte

I hope to apply these lessons by allowing the students the space to fail, which would mean that their advocacy campaign does not receive buy in necessary to have legislation implemented or their event has very low attendance, so that they can learn from the experiences and improve in the future. However, a risk to doing so is that the students may feel defeated resulting in a weakened morale. Therefor, I must clearly facilitate processes in which students are able to reflect on their experiences, consider and acknowledge when systems or I may be a contributing factor to the failure rather then them, and feel supported to continue to learn in a risky environment similarly to the ways in which Childrens’ Hospital approached nursing errors. In setting clear expectations that students follow through on tasks they are assigned or self-assigned and creating no-blame spaces where it is okay to fail, I believe the students will feel more empowered to have the confidence to perform and achieve success in their
People tend to become confused on the differences between motive and evidence which are completely different in definition, yet have a few similarities as well when discussing how they tie into one another. Motive, as defined by Merriam Webster is “a reason for doing something”. For example, one’s motive for robbing a bank could be to pay of college debts. Evidence as defined by Merriam Webster is something which shows that something else exists or is true. For example, evidence to a murder could be a potential suspects fingerprints found on the gun used to execute a victim. How these two words, “evidence” and “motive”, words with completely different meanings can tie to each other is that in a case evidence could help find one’s motive for
Following an adaption of Johns’ model of structured reflection (Jasper, 2003), I will discuss an event that occurred during my residential placement as a nursing student, what I have learnt and how I would act if the situation arose again. Lastly, I will discuss what I have learnt in relation to the Nursing Council of New Zealand competencies for cultural safety and communication.

The aim of this essay is to reflect on the personal development in one of the four domains at the progression point 2. The four domains of nursing care are professional values; communication and interpersonal skills; nursing practice and decision making; leadership, management and team working (NMC, 2016). These are the essential areas where student nurses have to improve their knowledge and skills prior to the nursing registration for improving the quality of nursing care that they provides afterwards (NMC, 2016). The chosen domain for this particular essay is the nursing practice and decision making, as the author had experienced an incident during the placement which is most
Throughout this course I have learned so much in regards to what type of characteristic and responsibility is required to become a successful heath care professional. For example, being guided by a professional codes of ethics can help patients and health care professional to provide the best and safest care. Some of these principle include, respecting confidential information, be honest, keep promises and do no harm. As a future nurse, I have learned my weaknesses and my strengths in regard to my characteristics. For instance, my strongest characteristics is being a fast learner and having the ability to solve problems under stress. In the other hand, this course has shown me my weaknesses, such as, having no physical endurance and my lack
In retrospect, I realised the importance of responding to a nurse call bell in reasonable amount of time in preventing clinical incidents. Evidences indicate that a shorter staff response time to a patient call is related to decrease hospital falls rate. Additionally, knowledge about falls prevention strategies allowed mo to organize my thoughts and react immediately to the situation. On the other hand, I recognize that I failed to become an advocate for patient safety because of knowledge deficit and “aftermath of reporting”. According to Duffy, McCallum, Ness and Price (2012) students are reluctant to challenge experiences in clinical placements due to lack of knowledge, experience and possible impact on assessment. Still, I feel that
Erica Higgins started her presentation with a quote from Arnold H. Glasow, which was, “A good leader takes a little more than his share of the blame, a little less than his share of the credit.” This quote immediately set the tone for the entire presentation. As a leader, it’s not about playing the hero or being some huge winner. Typically to your subordinates, you’re the coach or the facilitator for your team to be successful. Sure, you may have some bright idea that you came up with, that separates your team from others. But as a leader, it is your job to come up with these ideas. However, who is really responsible for executing these ideas? It is those below you, who are working under your beliefs. But how do you get your subordinates to work under your guidelines? To answer this question, Erica used the Vice Chairman of Wealth Management at Morgan Stanley, Carla Harris’s advise. Be authentic and train people’s
The proposed capstone project began with remembering what it was like to start out as a new clinical instructor. I started teaching clinicals confident in my ability to coach and mentor nursing students in their skills and critical thinking. During my tenure as an adjunct clinical instructor the nursing program never assessed my skills. As a clinical instructor students are looking to you as an example. Many times the examples provided are lacking in evidence-based practice knowledge and clinical competency. One specific memory is of a student asking for assistance in placing a nasogastric tube. As an experienced emergency room nurse many would have thought my abilities to place a nasogastric tube would have been proficient, when in reality I had only placed one as a student. The distress I felt at attempting to coach my clinical student as well as the humiliation at having to ask a nurse on the unit to assist caused me to question my abilities as a clinical instructor. If my skill set had been assessed at the start of my clinical instructor career and annually, the nursing program could have mentored myself and others in how to handle these situations and also improve our knowledge of various skills.
Critical reflection is vital to develop evidence based practice for safe and quality approaches to professional nursing practice. Nursing professionals should critically reflect on events to identify what health professionals might do to improve their practice and reduce the risk of a similar error. Reflective practice can help to learn from their mistakes, be empowered and most importantly to deliver best possible care to patient as nurses must work closely with their patients to develop a therapeutic relationship. Critical reflection is a valuable skill to ensure patient centred care. This practice promotes personal development by enhancing students’ self-awareness, their sense of community, and their sense of their own capacities for
During an initial class with adult learners, I ask them to share a crucible moment, focusing on a time of pressure, severe test or situation that changed their thinking or the direction of their lives. The purpose and understanding of reflection is important in instruction. Authentic leaders have a clear understanding of who they are and they lead from their core values (Northouse, 2016). In discovering my core values by following my internal leading in becoming an authentic servant leader (George, 2010), I am able to recognize the importance of being self-aware, relational, supportive, and participatory with the ability to manage crisis (Northouse, 2016). I struggle with delegating responsibility, which is a needed skill in Higher Education as a Director or Dean.
My workplace is very busy, sometime when student posting in our department, nurses don’t have time teach them. The students must learn by themselves. If they have any problem in their procedures or learning, they can ask the nurses. Hinchliff (1999) thinks that students learn by acting as their role model and there is no problem for them to learn.
I believe that by constantly positioning myself in situations where I will have to face failure, I will become immune to its detrimental effects and learn how to effectively respond. Although it may be uncomfortable, it is essential for me to complete on my journey of growth and self-discovery. It will allow me to take more risks and pursue what I truly want, to guide people along their road to full potential. Ultimately, this will be accomplished by creating an open line of communication with my mentees where we will discuss and accept ownership of any mistakes that may have contributed to their
December 18, 2015 was my second shift at Sunny brook hospital on the trauma unit. It was my first night shift as a nursing student. This situation that occurred was extremely meaningful to me as a student nurse because the events made me fell very overwhelmed, stressed, and unable to make appropriate decisions. Reflecting back on that night, it made me realize that I did not exemplify best practice. I personally believe my personal emotions clouded my judgment, which interfered with my performance and my lack of knowledge on how to
Nursing students face many challenges due to their narrow scope of practice, and lack of experience and knowledge. This changes with the development and learning of values and beliefs, which shape the decision making in the nursing process. During my clinical nursing practice experience as a new nursing student, I have had amazing learning opportunities as well as situations that made me feel uncomfortable, powerless, and dependent on the assigned nurse. In this paper I will talk about one of my clinical experiences where I felt powerless, analyze it, and show how the sociopolitical inquiry and power dynamics come into play in my story.
As a leader, I tried to emphasize that we are in this together and that their feedback is critical. They can voice concerns and ideas at any time. It was also stated that accountability would also be part of the changes. In both instances where major changes occurred, I tried to use analogies to help assist in the understanding of what it currently looks like, and what it can look like if we achieve it. I try to personally acknowledge individuals and groups for their effort.”
