The Truth Behind PETA
Animal rights groups are known for their love of animals and trying to do everything in their power to give animals rights. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), is one of the most well known and largest animal rights organizations in the world, with over 6.5 million members and supporters. Most people know what PETA’s mission is, to give animals equal rights as humans, but what many don’t know is what really goes on behind closed doors and away from the media’s eyes. PETA has some rather unquestionably gruesome truth about their organization that they try to keep hidden from their moderately populous supporters. Being the largest animal rights group in the world, their mission and campaigning techniques must be comparatively unique. PETA is a nonprofit organization with their mission being “dedicated to establishing and protecting the rights of animals. PETA operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way.” Their organization claims hunters to be careless and selfish, yet hunters spend $746 million solely

Only $17 million goes towards donations to charitable organizations, which no doubt goes toward other nonprofit organization operating costs instead of going directly toward the environment. PETA’s claims towards hunters are incredibly inaccurate as hunters are the conservationists not the other way around. One of PETA’s main goals is to abolish hunting, if they would have their way, who would take care of the many needs of animals for instance, threatened and endangered species? If this were to happen PETA wouldn’t be the ones expanding habitat or preserving wildlife. PETA also claims that the majority of Americans are against hunting. Well, if this is true then who are the 78% of Americans supporting hunting and where do they come from? The fact of the matter is that PETA’s claims are once again false
The interest group that I will discuss in this paper is the one of the most well-known animal rights groups in the world; People for the ethical treatment of animals, commonly known as, PETA. Founded in March 1980 by Newkirk and fellow animal rights activist Alex Pacheco, the organization first caught the public's attention in the summer of 1981 during what became known as the Silver Spring monkeys case, a widely publicized dispute about experiments conducted on 17 macaque monkeys inside the Institute of Behavioral Research in Silver Spring, Maryland. The group first came to
Peta investigation found a farmer killing injured turkeys by beating them with a metal rod, leaving them alive and tossing them aside to slowly die. The industry deemed this act as legal and ignored the farmers beating the turkeys. Many turkeys were taken to the slaughter sick and half dead for being loaded on the transportation truck and given no water or food and traveling through unforeseen weather conditions. The final words of Alec Baldwin from the PETA investigation is when you sit down at your table, become a vegetarian for the sake of all the animals in the world. The problem with the animals continue to be abuse are people turning their heads to the abuse. The profits from the animals are more important than their treatment.
There are many other special interest groups that seek balance and equality from the government, like the ones fighting for retired workers, veterans, and even individuals with a high concern for the environment or animal rights, such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the National Science Foundation. Many of these Special Interest Groups provide a vital support system for giant populations of people who would otherwise go unheard or would not know where to begin to express concerns for their main issues regarding a variety of different
In the United States, hunters are being interrogated by an ignorant organization better known as PETA, which stands for "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals." I believe this uneducated group of people are lacking knowledge of what an avid hunter actually does. The definition of a hunter is not just a person that hunts. A true hunter is a skilled human being or animal that is willing to kill for an apparent necessity. Although PETA has over 3 million members and supporters, there are over 20 million active hunters in America. (Hunters against PETA) The amount of hunters are significantly higher than PETA members. PETA should not be against wild game hunters in America because of the economic growth, game population
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is one of the most recognizable organizations within the animal rights movement, due in part to their attention grabbing antics and controversial advertisements. While PETA has been successful in creating visual rhetoric that generally appeals to the audience’s cognitive reasoning and emotions they are often not successful in catalyzing actual change in behaviour.
With President Bush’s “War on Global Terrorism” making front page news reports and filling the news waves on the evening news, the American Public might not realize that there is in fact a war of sorts going on behind the scenes in their own country. This is the war on home-grown terrorist organizations. Moreover, it is the war to fight against the ALF (Animal Liberation Front) and its environmental little brother spin-off the ELF or Environmental Liberation Front. The Domestic Terrorism Section Chief of the FBI James Jarboe states that, “the ELF and ALF have become ‘one of the most active extremist elements in the United States’” (Pierce). In another article, John Lewis from the FBI
Take PETA for example. What was once a small animal activist group, now has over 3 million members and supporters worldwide. PETA stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Their slogan is “Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any
PETA is one of the most well-known nonprofit organizations in the world. However, despite the fact that the organization has spent a considerable amount of time in the spotlight and under the scrutiny of the public eye, there are still some things that many people don't know. With that in mind, here we present our list of things you probably didn't know about PETA. Well, what are you waiting for? Check it out for yourself below!
Back then, there were no such organizations similar to PETA who would fight for animal rights. The only things a person can do if they wanted to provide for animals are donating money to a community or volunteering at a nearby animal shelter. It was in 1980 when PETA officially started for the first time to protest against chicken slaughter (PETA). PETA is still an active group and they’re probably way bigger than they were when they started. The person the started it all and is still in control of PETA is Ingrid Newkirk. I would say that Newkirk is pretty much an extremist and to show how much she supports animal rights, she believes the way that the only way to show that is by being a vegan, not wearing any kind of furs because wearing furs
They focus on factory farms, the clothing trade, laboratories, and the entertainment industry (PETA “Human Abuse”). PETA also mentioned a study conducted by Northeastern University and the Massachusetts SPCA, which found that people that abuse animals are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against humans (PETA). If a person loves the feeling of overpowering others, why would they stop with one category? People who enjoy the feeling they get when they’re in control will always be power hungry unless they get help; unless they are stopped.
and other acts in order for consumers to obtain their fur luxuries. I feel as though when PETA is
“They are sentimental beings who are clearly capable of experiencing pleasure pain and suffering. Consequently, respecting their intrinsic value entails releasing them from involuntary association with humans” (D'Silva and Turner). Animals do have emotions like every human does, equally sharing the same pain, happiness, and sadness feelings like people do. As a result animals should not have to go through painful experiences, since they can be referred to being the same as people. “The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) promotes appreciation for and humane treatment of animals, encourages enforcement of anticruelty laws, and works for the passage of legislation that strengthens existing animal protection laws” ("American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals" ). Although there are many animal being abuse, there are also organizations to help animals get the protection they need. Many organizations like ASPCA, are trying to encourage anti-cruelty laws to be put into action. Not only do animals face getting treated unfairly, they are also being illegally hunted by criminals just to get some money off of them.
PETA is an animal rights organization based in the United States. Much of the information on PETA’s website involving animal testing depict it as cruel and unnecessary. One page in particular
A reporter from PETA says ”No shelter that truly cares for animals should ever turn its back on an animal in need, even when that means taking in animals who are diseased, badly injured, aggressive,
PETA, though it does many things, has four main objectives. They focus on animal cruelty on factory farms, which are also known as confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and intensive livestock operations (ILOs). These farms are more worried about profits and high volumes of goods than they are about human health, safe food, the environment, fair treatment of animals, and the surrounding economy (Factory Farms). PETA also focuses on cruel treatment to animals in laboratories, in the fur trade, and in the entertainment industry (like Khartoum). They also work on projects helping birds, beavers, and abused backyard dogs, as some examples. To reach the public, PETA uses many tactics, including working “through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and direct action.” (PETA: Official Page). PETA tries to reach the public any way possible.
