I chose to read Pet Sematary, written by Stephen King, because I saw the movie last summer. As the movie was very entertaining and contained a lot of horror, I wanted to see how it would compare to the book. Pet Sematary is a horror book that focuses on a family who moves right in front of a mysterious field. The field reawakens anything dead once it has been buried there. As the animals and humans come back to life with “a demonic spirit”, the temptation to bring a loved one back again to life is seen as too much. Diction is the choice of words and phrases in a book. Stephen King uses diction to widely spread his well written books as it appeals to all audiences. It is demonstrated when he explains, “Ellie, resplendent in a navy blue dress bought especially for the …show more content…
The tone is the overall mood and feelings the text exemplifies. Stephen King uses different tones throughout the book to convey all of the different situations. As Juds face is completely out of order, “He told us only the bad, he said after a moment. Only the bad are the good. God knows” (King 259). Here, the tone of horror is used by King to strike fear into the reader. This allows the audience to read the book differently and have different emotions scattered based on what tone King decides to use. The persuasion method of pathos uses the emotion of somebody to convince the audience. Stephen King uses the emotions of his characters to convey the idea to the readers. While Gage was in very bad shape, Louis “kneeled on the floor, eyes closed, until he felt capable of actually making it to his feet” (King 265). Here, Louis cannot believe what is going on with his child, meanwhile his family is already in a terrible situation. This use of pathos by King aims for the readers to feel sympathy for Louis and his family's state of living. Overall, I would choose this book
Firstly, tone immensely helps the reader feel for the character(s), whether that may be a positive or negative feeling, which creates engagement with the story. In the story “The Kindness of Strangers”, the tone can be seen as dark as it is about the main character going through family issues. To portray the theme, it was said in the story, “His mother screamed, ‘Get out! Get out of here and get out!
Diction: Depending on the word choice the author uses they can provide a more complete and detailed analysis of a topic. Advanced and diverse vocabulary use also helps to keep the reader engaged by not creating a monotone voice with author and descriptive language allows the reader to picture in their mind what the author is saying which also helps them to understand the author's argument.
When the author uses tone it helps me as a reader connect to the story. So it’s not so boring. When the author uses tone it makes you think on a
Sometimes the author's tone is somehow
Secondly, the author uses Pathos to jar the reader’s emotion. The entire piece has numerous examples of emotional persuasion. Jonathan Swift talks of the benefits of child cannibalism:
Lastly, Pathos is the appeal to emotion. Pathos will use the emotion the persuader is appealing to and exploit that to convince the audience of their point of view. Pathos has been used heavily in politics recently, mostly appealing to the people’s emotion of anger and embarrassment in congress to persuade the audience that the opposing party is the one to vote for. The assumption of common sense is also used in pathos. In order to appeal to one’s emotions, the audience must share the same knowledge you’re basing your argument off
EQ: How does the author use diction and other literary devices to create a mood?
Diction is the style of writing that is determined by the choice of words by a writer. Diction can also include the mood, attidue, etc. It can also determine certain things in writing such as how the audience percieves the writer. The effect of diction can effect wether or not writing seems credible or not.
What creates tone?: Tone is created by the author’s word choice or the author’s attitude towards a certain subject. Tone is heavily implied through an author’s word choice. One word in a sentence could completely change the tone and the significance it holds in the story.
King uses Pathos to successfully persuade his audience if kids and adults to let their emotions free . He successfully convinces to the reader that reading or watching a horror movie can be
Kurt Vonnegut uses numerous tones throughout the text in order to portray his feelings in different parts of the novel. In the beginning of the story, for example, Vonnegut narrates his own life during the troublesome era of World War 2. The first couple pages of the novel have a conversational tone that Vonnegut uses, as if to show the readers that although negative things
A tone is the way the author conveys his or her unstated attitudes toward the story. The tone from the beginning to the end of Samuel is a serious tone. “Some boys are very tough. They’re afraid of nothing. The description Paley gives in the first two sentences makes you feel that the tone is going to be serious. Another example can be when the ladies in subway car become angry when they look at the boys. “Most of them brought their brows together and hoped the boys could see their disapproval”. They convey the serious tone through the way they feel through facial expressions. Thoughts of one of the women passenger’s shows a mothers concern when she attempts to confront the boys. “One of the ladies wanted to get up and say, be careful you dumb kids, get off the platform or I’ll call the cop.” The tone makes the situation serious tone even if it was thought and not an action. In another paragraph her action show the seriousness of the situation when thinks of her own child. “She stood up with determination and went to the door. Her action tells us that tone was not to be taken lightly and it was a serious matter.
Tone is a major contributor to the work of the “Hate Poem”. “Tone is an aspect of point of view since it has a great deal to do with the narrator. Tone is the narrator’s predominant attitude toward the subject, whether that subject is a place, event, character or idea” (Writing Essays about Literature, Kelley Griffith page 46). When analyzing the “Hate Poem” by Julie Sheehan, “To understand the tone of the poem, we need to listen to the words, as we might listen to an actual conversation. The key is to hear not only what is being said but also how it is being said.” (Kennedy and Gioia) Her use of several styles of irony help with the tone she is trying to convey. She uses the word hate when it has the ability to actually mean it’s
Tone is the way someone speaks or the expression something looks. Ghosts speak differently depending on their mood and who they are talking to, a ghost may not even speak at all. Who you’re talking to can affect your conversation a lot. In the book ‘Deep Dark And Dangerous’ the author makes it seem very frustrating when some characters talk to each other. They don’t really seem excited at all except for in the beginning when Claire decides to let Ally go with Dulcie. Whenever someone talks to another, they rarely speak caring or nice. This is very different from the article because they talk about how they are always excited to talk to others. People in the article still talk to people unkindly if someone else makes them upset
Pathos appeals to the reader’s emotions by using emotional stories and imagery. Pathos strategies are often used to grab and hold the reader’s attention. Emotional or personal stories give the reader an opportunity to emotionally relate to the story, and allows them to be emotionally connected. An emotionally connected reader is more interested in the story that a reader who is not emotionally connected.
