You are sitting down in a dressing room, pulling out your leotard and tights out of your ballet bag. You slip on your tights, and they fit snugly around your legs. You step into your leotard, and feel the feeling of being a ballerina. Next, you pull a pair of satin pointe shoes from your bag. Yesterday you had sewn on the laces. You slip the shoes on and cross the laces and tie them. You stand up and walk into the studio.Your pointe shoes clip and clop against the tile hall. You slowly take a place at the barre as the music begins.

When I entered my first ballet class, at the age of three, I doubt my mother had thought that I would become as passionate about it, as I did. Now, fourteen years later, that passion has not dwindled. I have spent countless hours in and outside of the dance studio training with some of the most acclaimed professional ballet dancers, in an attempt to further develop a skill that can never be perfected. I have performed and competed, on International stages, in countries like Italy, Panama and the United States and have earned multiple scholarships to attend world renowned dance schools such as Alvin Ailey, the Ecole Supérieure de Danse de Cannes and the Berlin State Ballet. At the age of eleven, I started competing at the Youth America
Dancers use their entire bodies when they dance which burns a lot of calories which keeps them in shape. Ballet, like many forms of dance is exhausting but very fun. Ballet is rigorous and dancers will get many injuries, like when Michaela danced even though she could have snapped her tendon. Which is why many people often suggest taking a dance class, Zumba for example, if people need to exercise, because they can learn to enjoy it. Making exercise not be a chore they dread, but a fun

Growing up was never easy for me, but I did not let that stop me from pursuing my ballet career. I didn’t grow up doing ballet, and taking my first ballet class at the Boys and Girls Club at age 13 gave me a setback compared to others who may have been dancing since they were 3. My teacher put me into many positions,

The applauding audience, the lights, sequins and feathers, the colorful, elaborate tutus, and satin pointe shoes capture the hearts of young girls. Where else can a young girl dream of becoming a princess, a swan, a dancing snowflake or flower, or a sugarplum fairy? Where else can she be a fairy tale character like Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty? Where else can she be rescued by her handsome prince and collapse into his arms? Ballet is the magical world where these dreams can come true. Young girls and women can be all of these things, symbolizing femininity in a culture that teaches young girls to be and want everything pink and pretty.
Who is credited with identifying the five positions of the feet upon which all ballet steps are based, systematizing the method of teaching dance, and devising a system of dance notation?

“Dance is certainly a sport, and they are phenomenal athletes, and they’re also artists.” - Neve Campbell. The definition of the word “sport” is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment”. Everything stated in that definition, is true about dance. It involves extreme physical exertion, a wide array of skills, and when you take your dance routine to a competition, you are competing against other teams/routines. Many people in the world would most definitely argue that dance is not a sport. Dance is not only a challenging art, but a very challenging sport as well as it requires a large amount of physical effort, skill base, you compete against other teams and it is certainly entertainment.
The first experience of watching a ballet, for me or any little girl, can be fascinating and exhilarating. Wondering how a dancer can be so steady on her toes as she spins in circles and leaps through the air. Watching a ballet, there is a feeling of wanting to be graceful, as well as the warm sensation felt by a little girl as she slips into dream land. My mom had taken me to my first ballet when I was 11 years old. When we returned home home, she signed me up for classes at the local dance center. The expectations to become a prima ballerina would involve much hard work and concentration. I knew when I started it would take years of steady practice and commitment. Learning the history of ballet and the famous
Contemporary ballet, although is a form of ballet but looks vastly different from classical and romantic ballet. Contemporary ballet consist of ballet and contemporary dance, and the dance often includes having a partner. Contemporary ballet is often done in a turned in position while classical ballet is done in a turned out position. Alonzo King, a local San Francisco dance company owner inspired many choreographer with his choreography by having a perfect blend of traditional and modern dances in his piece. His choreography often contain a strong, controversial meaning. “The Moroccan Project”, choreographer Alonzo King suggests the message of love and inequality, using their trademark moves: spinning and elevating, in the contemporary modern dance style.
Just like any other sport, dance is divided up into equal groups, by age or skill. By doing tricks and different body actions, it takes as much hard work as any other sport.
I started ballet when I was 5 years old. At first I did not want to join ballet. But my mom forced me to join. When I tried out, I was really enjoying the class. But I did not want to show that I did enjoy it.
The six goals that I plan to try for the Self Makeover project are, for my personal life is to try and spend more time with my friends and try to go running multiple times a week. My campus or community engagement ideas are to go to a couple events here at Longview and to try to branch out and gain more relationships with Longview staff and other students. For my performance as a student I will get help from tutors and set a specific environment for me to study.
