Every 98 seconds an American is sexual assaulted across America. 1 in 6 American women have been raped or an attempted rape. According to RAINN 4 in 10 women have had an abortion, while 1 in 8 maternal deaths are caused by unsafe abortion. Women’s rights are human rights, around the world women are being denied rights, here in America women don’t have equal pay, rights over their own bodies are in converse, in Africa and the middle east, girls and women are being stolen from their homes and from their schools. Women’s rights are an important topic because women’s rights are human rights, this should matter to all people because this issue is a social injustice all round the world, that has negatively affected women for years. Women should have the same rights as men because many women face systematic oppression, many women are despotism relation to their male counterparts, and the general population is unaware of the seriousness of the issues. According to The National Organization for Women, women only make 77 cents per dollar a man makes, this can cause women to stay in unhealthy and abusive relationships because they are financially depended on their spouse or boyfriend. There is a 9.4% pay gap between men and women, this causes many women to feel angry and that there is a social injustice that they want to change. Women do the same work as men and only earn 77 per dollar simply because she is a woman. This results in women making thousands of dollars less than a
This article states that because of this unfair wage gap, women make on average nearly $16,000 less than men do. This can impact a woman's life in a big way because they may not be able to support their families being as women are seen as the main caregivers in life. Regardless, of the unfair wage gap women still have to pay the same amount rent as a man does showing that they have an extreme disadvantage in life and live closer to the poverty line making life harder for women. The last injustice in
Currently the average woman continues to be paid .77 cents for every dollar the average man earns. When we figure race into the equation it becomes even more distressing; African American women earn just .64 cents and Hispanic women only earn .55 cents compared to the average white male. The poorest in the American economy are disproportionately women and especially women of color (Ehrenreich). Closing the wage gap between men and women would cut the poverty rate in half, and would add nearly half a trillion dollars to the American
Most people think that the fight for women's equality stopped years ago when in reality it still remains a national issue. Legally it appears as though women have the same freedoms as men, for example the right to vote, freedom of speech, etc. But due to the fact that women still don't obtain equal pay or have nationwide paid maternity leave, it's still an ongoing fight. Fair and equal rights for women are still a large problem in the U.S. and we need to take action against these injustices.
The average woman in the United States makes approximately $82.90 for every dollar their male counterparts make. (Elsesser). While those 20 cents may seem inconsequential to you, they add up. Losing that much money all year can be the difference between someone living in poverty, and someone living a nice life. The gender pay gap is the cause of this problem. Around the world, women are losing money just because of what gender they are. The gender wage gap is a huge problem, that can only be solved by going to extreme measures, such as requiring people to release their employees wage gap and passing new laws.
America was founded in 1776, but it wasn’t until more than 150 years later when women were even allowed to vote. Although we have come a long way since then, women in this country are still not equal to men. The wage gap is a commonly cited example of this, but it’s not what it seems to be. On first glance it seems that women are paid only 79 cents to a man’s dollar, and
The inequality of pay between a man and a woman grows when the woman's race is taken into consideration, statistically, white women earn seventy-eight cents, African-American women earn sixty-four cents and Latina women earn fifty-six cents for every dollar earned by a white man as stated on www. whitehouse.gov. This significant wage gap is not just a bunch of numbers -- it has real life consequences that affect real life women: women with growing children to feed, women of color, disabled women, aging women longing retirement, and your own
She glares as she’s told “it’s pretty good for a girl”. He puts back the doll he had chosen for being told boys don’t play with girl toys. They sit in front of the TV being fed misogynistic lines from candidates who have no business being front runners. But when told that sexism is irrelevant they believe it and project it onto others. Why would the word “girl” ever become derogatory, for that is absurd? So when they grow up and see this as wrong, pronouncing themselves feminists, dirty looks and rolled eyes are seen. Picturing caricatures of these females who choose to speak their opinions, how dare they? How dare these women express their opinions they so rightfully own? Although there are always the people who choose to see past
Women are not seen as equals to men, and power and control are to blame for this. For many and many of years, women have been belittled and left out of the historical canon. As a result, women have been deprived of experience in jobs which has caused an inequality in the overall experience. The stratification of gender has caused this ignorance of the knowledge of men about how women should follow the rules of men. Lawmakers for many years have created policies that limit women’s ability to make decisions about their own bodies. Issues as serious as abortion have diminished the power of women of color in ways that restrict them from escaping this matrix of domination. Women as a whole do not experience the same forms of discrimination. In the U.S. race plays a huge role in how white women and women of color experience oppression differently forever. The lobbyist has this double consciousness about women that their sole purpose is to reproduce and refrain from abortion because it is frowned upon and immoral to take the life of an unborn fetus. While in reality the standpoint of women of color, and abortion cannot be subjected to male-dominated opinions of what they believe is right based off a one-sided viewpoint. The laws surrounding abortion, which are created by men should be reconstructed in a way that takes into account the oppression and experience of abortion on women of color.
Many people cite a violation of free speech as a reason to repeal Bill C-16, the best argument in opposition of that stance aims to say that, though it is not a perfect legislation, the controls it places on free speech are necessary in order to guarantee the freedom from discrimination of non-binary and transgendered, Canadian citizens. All humans have a gender identity, and the contention is that everyone expresses theirs in a unique way. Bill C-16 aims to protect these individuals in areas regarding immigration, criminal law, federal services, and the census. It also acts to stop the spread of hate propaganda and hate speech by making them criminal offenses, which claims to assist in the protection of gender-diverse communities.
Many women suffer around the world and have trouble gaining equal rights. Countries such as: Iran (where women have to cover their face and legs), Saudi Arabia (where women can not be in public without their face covered), and France (where you can not cover your face in public), have strict rules about what clothing women can wear (Bruce-Lockhart) (Kim). Women have been suffering and fighting for rights around the world for centuries. Some of the many major issues that they fought for or are still fighting for now are the right to vote, the political and economical power the women are limited to, and the right to and education.
It’s no secret that worldwide women have unreasonably high expectations set for them. Yet it seems as though for a few days of every month, that bar is lowered and we as women are allowed to kick our feet up, complain and do practically nothing but binge-eat chocolate without judgement thanks to our on and off again friend, Mother Nature. Yes, that’s right - we’ve become so desperate to escape from the standards set by us from society that our periods have become our only excuse to relax and not have everything together. However, recent advertising from the feminine hygiene company Always Infinity is swiftly taking away our much needed break by implying women shouldn’t be taken less seriously just because of their crimson waves. Quite frankly, this isn’t the case and I’m tired of seeing this agenda being pushed.
Today in our generation, much has changed over the years dealing with women’s rights. Women have more rights today than they did back in the early years. Conflict over social values affected the wider political environment and the readiness of institutions to facilitate the movement for equality (Chafe, W, 1978). Some people still believe today that women shouldn’t have a voice. “Empowering women isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do” (Barack Obama). In this paper it examines the equality in voting, sexual harassment, and women equality in not only the workplace, but in their everyday lives.
Civil liberty is defined as freedom of action and speech. America's vision is about giving all citizens civil liberties, but not everyone acquired their freedoms at first. Through time though, American citizens slowly obtained their rights and freedoms. Civil liberty complications of the American past have been resolved because genders have the same have the same freedoms, citizens, of all races, have equal entitlements, and citizens of all social classes have the same rights.
Growing up, school has taught us all about Math, Science, English, along with the either dreaded or loved, History. History teaches us about the past when the majority of us weren’t here. From Christopher Columbus sailing the ocean blue to Lewis and Clarks expedition, history covers a broad range of topics. One big event in history was the Equal Rights Amendment. A reasoning behind this amendment coming about was the lack of freedom that women as a whole did not have access to. Even still to this day women are lacking the pay and privileges of some men. Women deserve every right and privilege that men get in the workplace and in everyday life.
When one were to attend a feminist rally today they would encounter many things: chanting, big signs, passion, organized groups, t-shirts, and a large majority of women; however these women are fighting for rights they already have. In a society that has a fair playing field for both men and women alike, are all of the rallies and chanting really worth it? Modern feminism in 2017 is unwarranted and unnecessary because of the belief of an imaginary wage gap and perpetuating that taking women’s studies in college will benefit women in the real world.
