The Iditarod
By: Piper Bailey Have you ever heard of the Iditarod? If not, it’s a dog sled race in Alaska. This race is dreadful to dogs, in ways that’ll break dog lovers hearts. So, I think the Iditarod is bad for dogs. The terrain of the Iditarod is harmful to the olympic dogs racing. Also, in the Iditarod there are multiple mushers that abuse their dog sled team. Along with that, the dogs are at high risks of death in every race. Dogs are getting hurt in the dreadful Iditarod and the temperatures are just the beginning. The Iditarod is long, paw numbing, bumpy, and brutal. In the article “The Amazing Race” by Stephen Fraser, from Current Science, it states that dogs cross 1,150 miles (1,850 kilometers) of rough, ragged, rocky, and snowy trails. Dogington Post’s article “Is the Iditarod Sled Race Safe for the Dogs?” by Brandy Arnold, stated the trails are miles of frozen rivers, barren tundras, treacherous paths, that include steep climbs. That same article said Alaska has horrible weather, rain, snow, and sleet. They also said,

According to Brandy Arnold’s article “ Is the Iditarod Sled Race Safe for the Dogs” reporters stop interviewing mushers a day prior to the race. No one really knows what happens to the dogs when they’re alone with the mushers. That same article says that the dogs “seem to love it”. What if the dog is abused during every race, would they “love” it then? Animal abuse is common in the Iditarod, who commits it? Mushers. In the video “Iditarod Dogs Face Tough Journey on Trail” by D-News, musher Rammy Brooks was reported to Iditarod officials for abusing his pack. The video also said that Brooks was seen whipping (with a whip), punching , and kicking the dogs. See, another reason the Iditarod is bad, the dogs are being abused by mushers. Abuse by mushers is not only hurting the dogs but killing
Have you ever heard about the Iditarod? The Iditarod is very important to mushers. The dogs pull the Iditarod along. The mushers can’t compete if their dogs get hurt. The Iditarod is a significant event because it shows the history of Alaska, It preserves the trail,it shows respect for all those who died carrying the disease cure, and it saves the sled dog cutler.
Dogs are what their owners make of them, they are shere products of their environments and feed off of how their owners treat them. For example, in America pit bulls, over the years have been portrayed as harmful or aggressive. These views have lead to manying uncompassionate acts towards this lost breed. Such as, selling the dogs for drugs to people who could care less about them to forcing pitbulls in harmful dog fights. In America’s society today some often view pitbulls as just a way of breeding dogs. This means that they essentially are not taking part in what it actually means to have a pet. People are suppose to provide, feed, care, and love their dogs and in some cases that’s not their important objective. The underlying issue that
Into the Wild is a novel about Chris McCandless who left everything, and everyone he knew after college and essentially disappeared into the wild. A commonly asked question at the end of Into The wild is why did Chris McCandless do this, why did he abandon his college education and everyone he knew. Many have tried to figure out just this question but with the help of the memoir Walden, a book that heavily inspired McCandless, it is easy to see why McCandless left his conventional life. These reasons are that He wanted to be more like nature, to go with the flow and not let every little thing throw him off, Chris took this to the extreme and literally joined nature to get a better understand of it. He also wanted to live a simpler life, Chris again took this to the extreme by leaving everything that was extra or unneeded in his life. The final reason is that he wanted to see what reality and real life must offer, he didn’t want to see and live with the reality that other people imposed on things.
My opinion, is that it is not a death row for dogs and isn’t just a sport for some cash and a pickup truck. This race is true and dear to some people’s hearts, and reminds them of the troubles the mushers went through to get the serum back to the small city of Nome. They participate in this race to feel and live what they lived. They do it to see mother nature’s work, and the mushers try their best to keep their dogs safe, because when they lose a dog, it feels like they just lost someone in their family, because they actually just did. They are very close to their dogs, and never want anything to happen to them. This race takes many precautions to keep the dogs safe, and know that the dogs are the biggest contributors to this race. There are some people who beat their dogs and treat their dogs horribly, but that’s one out of hundreds. These dogs were bred for this, and are trained day after day to run in this race. These reasons are why my opinion is to keep this race
Every year about three-hundred thousand people show up to the Alaska State Fair, more than seven hundred miles away from Barrow, Alaska, and about five hundred and twenty-six miles away from the North Slope. The Fair has been active for 49 years and counting, but only has one location, Palmer, Alaska. There is more than seven-hundred thousand people that live in Alaska, so less than half of the residents are able to attend and enjoy the state fair every year. To help benefit the rural communities in Alaska for the Alaska State Fair experience, the fair should be moved every other year because people would be able to have the same opportunities that urban areas have, the attraction of the state fair would grow, performers could experience different
It is often noted that one can never truly understand the beauty of life until they go and experience it. This idea parallels with getting to know who they really are and figuring out what their purpose in life genuinely is, which not many people cannot comprehend. Everyone has different fears, desires, and feelings, but not until you live a life of new experiences do you harness your true self. Growing through experiences and connecting with nature allows someone to more deeply reflect on their individual purpose on Earth and discover their own definition of happiness. Henry David Thoreau comments on this even further by proposing that the disconnection from a society in which we are comfortable is the only way to cultivate an understanding of ourselves. Chris McCandless sets out on an adventure in a life absent of routine to push his boundaries and prove that he could make it on his own, finding the meaning of life in the process. Henry David Thoreau’s statement “Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves”, is correct, as evidenced by Jon Krakauer’s novel Into the Wild.
To begin with, if you ever experience dog sledding or watch a dog sled race, one thing you will definitely notice is the dogs’ excitement to run. When we went dog sledding, the barking, jumping dogs seemed to lose control as soon as the mushers got the harnesses out. We had to help hold them back so that they wouldn’t
When serum was brought to Nome, it was completed as a relay of several dogs. Today, dogs are pushed past their limits because they must run the 1000 mile plus course of the Iditarod with only one mandatory 24-hour break. The temperatures are far below 0 degrees Fahrenheit. One time, the temperature was 130 degrees below zero Fahrenheit! Many dogs are injured or killed during the race, and 50-70 % of the dogs in the race suffer from an exercised induced stomach disease (“Dogsled Racing”). Some deaths are considered unpreventable in Rule 42 of the Iditarod rulebook (“Dogsled Racing”). The trail goes over hazardous terrain such as steep mountain ranges and frozen rivers. Teams consist of 12-16 dogs and of those, only six are required to finish the race. Based on these facts, the risks of the Iditarod are dangerous and evenly deadly to the dogs who are forced to
Most people when they think of bull riding is staying on as long as possible and falling off and getting hurt. But they probably don't think of the pains that happened behind the scenes or the payout that are possible when they win. Payouts, spinal and brain injuries, and little but very painful pains is all thing that can happen to someone that bull rides.
When some thinks about a dangerous dog, they think about Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Husky, Doberman, or German Shepard. Many of us has named pit bulls to be the most dangerous dog out of all the breeds and cause the most damage than all of the other breeds combined. A lot of solutions have been presented to everyone to take precaution but most of the breed’s aggressiveness comes from the owner, their nature, or they got it by dog fighting. Their image in the people’s eyes changed by labeling them dangerous and there shouldn’t be any kind of breed like this, but they need to see the positive things about this breed. The positive things are that they are family friendly,
For someone to be on the road, people usually assume that they have lost hope in life, or that they were not that determine to maintain a place in our social class. Those who decided to live on the road do it for a different reason, reason that are either a push or pull factor. Someone who has helicopter parents, or having a difficult time trying to fit into society can find a reason to venture out and find self. Someone who felt like they no longer have a purpose in life, can find it by going on the road, because no one know you better than yourself. When writing a story of your life, do not let anyone else hold the pen. Just like the north star, which helped slaves find their way from slavery and captivity. In order to find true self, risk must be taken. While life on the road can seem like an act of avoidance of reality and problems, it can help someone find a purpose for life and their true self, therefore I believe that life on the road, is helpfully for those who are struggling with problems.
Across the world people abuse animals for sport, gambling, and pure exploitation like dog fighting, cock fighting, and breeding dogs just to be able to sell them to places such as shady pet stores and such. Dog fighting is a very lucrative illegal activity that goes largely unpunished these people take poor dogs and inbreed them with their moms, dads, and siblings to be able to create the perfect fighting dog that can make them loads of money. Some other things these groups do include giving them drugs that induce rage and make them even more lethal. These sorts of activities give other breeds such as pit bulls bad reputation; any dog regardless of type can be prone to violence, especially due to birth defects to inbreeding. In other parts
Horse Racing is very contronsival topic. Horse Racing is 39 billion dollar year industry. This is ,major sport and has a lot revenue. There are many people who go down to track and bet on these horses as entertainment day. It is filled with good times, booze, and gambling. All the thing you need to have fun. However, what happens to the horses?
The dogs of the Iditarod are well taken care of. They are probably taken better care of then most household pets, or even some people. Great lengths are taken to insure the safety and health of the animals. Vet checks are at each checkpoint, where licensed veterinarians volunteer to evaluate and give treatment (“Dogs are Priority #1)
With nearly millions of animals dying each year from being captive, or endangered species being hunted down and killed, we need to discover a new way of displaying that our world is full of beautiful animals and wildlife. Wild animals are suffering both physically and mentally from the lack of freedom that confinement imposes. These harmful environments are preventing animals from having the opportunity to live in, and be exposed to their natural habitats. Keeping animals imprisoned in cages and small enclosures just for the sake of human observation causes stress and frustration, which is risking animals overall health and well being. These morally unacceptable and cruel actions of retaining wild animals in captivity is certainly wrong.
