In Australia, sharks kill an average of three people every year. In Queensland 2017, to counter this, 667 sharks were culled to protect human’s safety on Australian beaches along with 100 accidental deaths of turtles, dolphins and dugongs. This was done with no scientific evidence to support that culling would work. All over the world 90% of shark species are threatened to become extinct with people killing 273 million sharks every year. This is why we must ban and make sure shark culling stops and never ever starts again. Shark culling is ludicrous, you have more of a chance dying from a coconut falling on you than a shark attack, coconuts actually kill 150 people every year does this mean we are going to kill all the coconuts? Here are a few arguments why shark culling must stop.
Firstly, if sharks numbers drastically decline then it will throw the food chain out of whack. Sharks eat the big fish, who in turn eat the smaller fish, which eat the smaller fish which eat the algae. If sharks were to become extinct then certain marine groups would overpopulate which would endanger a large number of other marine species making them either very rare or even extinct. “According to one study, without sharks the number of mid-level predators will increase many fold. These mid-level carnivores will eat most of the algae eaters. As a result, the seas will be choked with algae and its excretions. The water will become slimy. Sunlight penetration will be reduced. It will decrease coral reefs very soon. So, many thousands of dependent species will also go extinct.” (All Five Oceans, 2016) For example, do you like to eat shrimps, oysters or crabs? Because if shark culling continues then these species will become almost extinct. This is because sharks feed on rays who are the main feeders of these foods, if sharks become extinct then rays will overpopulate and with so many rays feeding on these foods then they will become rare and maybe even extinct.
Secondly, Sharks have been around for millions of years and have their own place on this earth, we have no right to kill them. Sharks first swam in the earth oceans around 420 to 450 million years ago. Trees first started growing around 385 million years ago. Sharks are
I How many of yall like Sharks? Most people are deadly scared of sharks, and some just simply do not like them. Well, I am not here to inform to like sharks, but here to inform you of the issues that shark face today.
In the Food Web I displayed previously, the animals that are part of the sharks diet are: smaller sharks, tuna and and marlin. These marine animals that find themselves apart of the sharks' diets will be competing with each other to find food - this is because there would be so many of them, and not as much of their food - because they won't be eaten by the shark. The animals that the marine animals (including tuna, marlin and smaller sharks) eat will decrease extensively, and become near extinct - these being tuna, squid, ocean sunfish, lancet fish, mackerel, amphipods and shrimp. Other animals that share the same diet of these fish may also find that they are not getting enough nutrients to live/survive, because their food is now being shared by lots more fish/marine animals, that, originally, would be eaten by the now culled sharks. With these other animals that share the same diet as the fish, if they don't get enough nutrients to survive, the survival of their species could be uncertain. If those species die out, then other consumers of them could possibly start to decline in numbers as well. Sharks keep the marine environment healthy and productive, therefore without them the ecosystem won't properly function resulting in the unbalance of food webs and food chains. Shark culling can also lead to coral reefs and other animals/species dying off. Shark
One reason for culling sharks is that when there are sharks in populated areas, people’s lives are in danger therefore if
To this day, many of us still see them this way. In fact, coastal states stared to host shark culling events. In these sometime month-long events, a state government will pay any fishermen to bring in a freshly killed shark generous amounts of money. Peter Benchley, the author of "Jaws" doesn't support shark culling, he in fact helped raise awareness about sharks becoming endangered. He wrote articles about how misunderstood sharks are (Benchley, Peter). This is now illegal in the United States, but is still practiced in countries such as Japan and Australia. Even in those countries, shark culling is on its way out. But
People visceral when they see a shark and they try to capture and kill it. Only some people want to protect sharks. Sharks help by keeping the fish population down First, we can protect sharks by doing little things such as stop finning sharks, picking up our trash. Next people destroy environments by oil spills. Not picking up trash. Last if people don’t stop finning sharks and not throwing their trash away our environment will smell bad and we will have no sharks left.
Whenever you go to the Fish and Chips shop, have you heard about “Flake”? Flakes are a type of shark. They have been killed just for us to eat. The price of them are also increasing. At least 100 million sharks are killed every year. In Eastern parts of Asia, Sharks were being culled for shark fin soup. Dragging out the sharks out of the ocean and cutting off their fins and throwing their dead body back into the ocean is unacceptable. How would you feel if we were dragged out of our home by a random person, got our arm cut off and got put back into our home again? I’m sure that we would all be horrified and terrified by this. It is said that Shark Fin Soup costs around $100 per bowl of soup. There are also some countries that have completely banned shark culling. They are Israel, Ecuador, Mexico, Egypt, Indonesia, Fiji and so on. It is very unfortunate that Australia isn’t a part of this. Sharks also help with ecosystems.
Shark culling has become the new issue for Australian media. Shark culling is not the answer for safer oceans. We would be far better allocating resources to achieving a greater understanding of ecology and behaviour of these large predators. Tagging sharks and following their movement over time will show were they are likely to attack next. The marine ecosystems needs the sharks at the top of the food web, removing the sharks you would see more lower ranked fish. The marine ecosystem will have to do some
Shark finning is the process of cutting off the fins of a shark and discarding the body at sea (“Stop Shark Finning”, 2009). People catch sharks for its fins, meat, oil, skin and so on. Sharks fins are most commonly used in Asian cooking which is shark fin soup. According to Maddalena, Sommeran and Leander (2007), people have been demanding for shark fins dramatically recently, it is unclear how many sharks are caught annually but some of the conservationists estimate the number to be upwards of 100 million. Besides, shark conservationists are aware about the consequences of the high demand of shark fins, they advocate people to stop killing sharks and eating shark fins. Practice of shark finning is causing imbalance marine ecosystems and it
Sharks, the scariest, biggest, baddest creatures! That's what we make them out to be, but are they really? The answer is no, we say that. We kill more of them than they kill of us, about 900,094 more. Sharks, being carnivores, are NOT natural predators of humans.
Sharks are important to our ecosystem and humans needs to protect sharks. The number of sharks have declined by 80% and the main reason is humans. Secondly sharks are important to our ecosystem to keep things balanced. Another reason sharks should be protected is because sharks can be used at a drug to treat human viruses. In conclusion this is why humans should stop the killing and start
Sharks are the top predators. But frankly, they are starting to vanish out of oceans every day. The sharks biggest enemy are humans. Us humans will kill sharks for food. Sometimes people will even take shark teeth and turn them into jewelry. Humans also will cut off the shark’s skin, and turn it into leather. If you find that disturbing, did you know that some individuals will cut out the shark’s liver and make it into a type of medicine?
There are so many interesting things about them. Dolphins have been around for about 15 million years now. They’re extremely intelligent, probably even more intelligent than us humans. Dolphins are becoming endangered because of humans and many don't know that. They are known as the oceans most kind animals.Dolphins have originated millions of years ago,are extremely endangered, and are becoming endangered. The most important thing to know about dolphins would probably be how they originated because without that those cute aquatic mammals wouldn't even exist.
Thesis: Sharks are a vital part of our ecosystem, and killing them disrupts the delicate balance of the ocean.
Sharks are vicious creatures and eat humans. Don’t go into the water if you see a shark nearby or they will come after you. These are a few of the many things you will hear from the television or even people you may know. Humans are not a part of the shark diet so it is highly unlikely that a shark would randomly go after a human. The media likes to make their shark stories more exciting by adding words like “aggressive” or “threatened.” There was a total of 4 deaths caused by sharks in 2014 which is a large contrast to the 11,417 sharks that are killed per hour by humans. sharks) need to be preserved and protected in order to preserve our oceans. Laws that are more strict should be implemented in order to achieve this goal.
The environmental factors are about the conditions and the surroundings that we live in. Shark finning is an awful practice that causes negative impacts for the environment. Once the sharks are caught, the fins are cut off and are returned to the waters. Almost always, they don’t survive due to predation to other animals, blood loss or from suffocation. The Shark Population is massively decreasing. Specialists estimate that approximately 100 million sharks are killed. In the marine ecosystem, sharks are probably the primary predators and ocean takers. They are apex predators who are responsible for keeping the population in balance. They have been around Earth for 400 million years. The Earth is 70% covered with water and it houses 80% of life on Earth, which is why it’s important to sustain this
