“Don't be afraid to have a reality check. Taking risks is OK, but you must be realistic.” Joy Mangano. This proves that although risk-taking can be accepted, you must be experienced in the risk that you’re taking in order to be safe. My first source, Helicopter Rescues Increasing on Everest is transcribed from Robert Siegel’s radio show, and is a nonfiction radio interview whose purpose is to inform readers. Another source I analyzed is “Why Everest?” The article was authored by Guy Moreau and is a nonfiction article that is meant to inform readers. The third source I researched is Ranger Killed During Rescue of Climbers on Mount Rainier and is a nonfiction newspaper article meant to inform readers. The author of the article is The Seattle Times. People do not have the right to rescue services when they put themselves at risk because it puts more people at risk, it is cost-heavy, and because they choose to risk their lives.
To start off, people who put themselves at risk also put others at risk, namely rescue services. In the radio interview, Nick Heil described a gruesome incident that occurred when rescuers attempted to save two climbers. He stated,”They crashed attempting to rescue the second man.” (Heil, lines 29-30) This quote describes that people taking risks endanger themselves as well as other people around them. This supports the claim that endangering yourself also endangers others because it describes the effects of what can potentially happen if something goes wrong. The Seattle Times news article states a ranger died while attempting to save climbers after getting stuck in a crevasse (Seattle Times, lines 1-3) This quote explains what happened when a climbing ranger was killed whilst trying to save climbers who took a risk and decided to go mountain climbing. It puts my claim that taking risks puts you and others in danger by putting into a real-life situation. Those who are pro-rescue services may claim that people in the rescue service industry sign up for potentially fatal risks. This may be true, but these fatal outcomes are the result of those who choose to take risks, therefore being the cause of rescuers’ imminent death.
To continue, the cost of rescue services is expensive. In the radio
In different circumstances, people have to risk other people's lives to save their
For the first reason that people do not have the right to rescue services when they put themselves at risk is people may die. In source #3 “Ranger Killed During Rescue of Climbers on Mount Rainier” indicate that rescuer died when he try to save the climbers. As narrated above in the newspaper article, “As Hall… was preparing some of climber for helicopter evacuation… he fell down the mountain’s northeast side from the 13700- foot level… Climbers reached him hours later and confirmed he had died.” This represents it’s very dangerous to tried save people at 13700- foot level high, and the climbers are dangling inside crevasse. Moreover, it proof that rescuers must have to be skilled, otherwise he will lose his life easily. For those who disagree are
Beowulf set his ego aside and hurdled into the face of danger in order to defeat a greater evil and liberate the people of Heorot from the demonic grasp of Grendel. The crew aboard the Challenger brought America together and helped us insure the safety of future astronauts. Tom pushed his body to the edge to live the life he dreamed of. Risks are imperative in life. Even beginning life, they are our instinct. We learn to crawl despite the bruises on our knees. We learn to walk no matter how many falls we endure. As we become further aware of the world around us, somewhere along the way, we experience failure; at that point, many people attempt to eradicate most risks from their life. But where would we be without our sense of exploration, our willingness to try new things? In order to push one’s boundaries, move forward as a society, and give purpose to life people must be willing to take risks.
The second reason people do not have the right to rescue services when they put themselves at risk is helicopter rescues
Citizens of America seek thrill and excitement. Whether this is in the form of concerts or snorkeling in the waters off the coast of Hawaii. However, others choose to go to the extreme and participate in the utmost endeavours. These thrill seekers may go through intense training before taking place in these activities. Accidents, although, do happen. Individuals cannot predict all that will transpire. People have a moral obligation to save others in need.
Did you know that over two-hundred thirty deaths have happened on Mount Everest and that rescue services have only successfully removed thirty bodies? Those people died because they were unprepared by not having enough oxygen or they didn’t plan accordingly. Being unprepared, not being physically fit, and putting other people at risk are three reasons why I think that Rescue Services should not be allowed for people who put themselves at risk.
Is is worth risking lives to explore the unknown during high risk missions? From 1967 to 2003, NASA had 3 disasters, resulting in the death of 17 people (one being a citizen). When confronted with the restraints that space programs have when studying certain topics in space, safety should be a number one priority. It is ethically wrong to send astronauts into space, without informing them of the risks of their mission. NASA should also weigh the risks of the mission with the anticipated outcome to decide if it ethically acceptable to go through the mission at all.
In 1983, Raymond Carver introduced his short story “Cathedral” to the public. The first-person narrative takes place within the narrator’s home, where his wife is waiting upon the arrival of her blind friend Robert. The narrator, however, becomes more concerned about how Robert’s visit will affect him rather than enjoy the situation. Once Robert arrives, the narrator tries to understand the blind man, but he is unaware of what tasks Robert is capable of performing due to the narrator’s inability to “see”. In time, Robert shows the narrator the difference between looking and seeing through illustrations of a cathedral, drawn by the narrator with his eyes closed. “Cathedral’s” narrator exposes readers to anti-heroic views
Being an athletes is one of the best-paid jobs on Earth. Being that they are paid so much the cost for the consumer is very high. The prices of tickets and sports memorabilia have been steadily rising over the years. The average ticket prices for the NHL, MLB, NBA and NFL all rose 5% to 10% this year, according to Jon Greenberg, executive editor of Team Marketing Report. (Mihoces).
It is hard to make the choice, but it is dangerous to hesitate on Mt. Everest or other high mountains, and sometimes the choice to try saving a person causes the deaths of others. In my opinion, it is not worth to climb the mountain or even try to save others, because if you die, there will be nothing, but there should be something that attracts the climbers even though they know they may lose their lives. In this wide world, there are a lot of things that you can enjoy without the high risks of death, so I’d rather enjoy my life in a comfortable
Secondly, people who end up hurt in life-or-death situations waste a lot of money. As stated in “The Cost of Survival”, the people stranded at sea costed $663,000. The authors agrees that they waste a lot of money, “In the end, taxpayers cover the cost of rescue for those who put themselves at risk. Maybe there are better uses for our money.” As stated in the text, people argue that they’re not going to call for help, knowing that they will be charged. However, most people don’t understand that “many rescue workers have lost their own lives saving others.” If you can simply be responsible for yourself and not be a fool, you’ll be okay physically.
Why spend money that is really needed for other things? Why live uncomfortably? Why be trapped in this hole called a home that belongs to another person? Why not live free and peacefully? When a person rents he or she usually throws away money that could be used to purchase something that belongs to them. Money is not easy to come by so why pay out hundreds toward something that is not benefit to the person paying it out. There is no good explanation for making a decision like this. The best option in a situation like this is to buy a house. Buying a house is a better option than renting an apartment.
If one dreams it, one can achieve it. Sometimes it can be hard to picture doing something great that the normal person wouldn’t get to do, but that’s what is so great about dreaming big. With hard work, proper coaching, and proper equipment, it is completely possible to accomplish any goal one is dreaming of. This could even mean becoming a professional athlete. Nike created a campaign called “Risk Everything”, which emphasizes the idea of risking everything for the chance to succeed. It is symbolized with a skull and fire. Nike advertises this campaign with a commercial called, “Winner stays”, which creates a sense of motivation to young athletes to dream big and work hard while wearing Nike products to become the next big player that everyone is cheering for.
“Your assignment is to write a persuasive essay and present it to the class in a week. You will be graded based on how convincing it is. Today we will be choosing topics,” announced Mr. Bowerbank, my 7th grade English teacher and ruler of classroom 110. My class simultaneously groaned at the prospect of work. I simply lifted my head with intrigue as it was already May and about time we had our first essay. He then proceeded to give examples of topics we could choose and gave us some time to think before we had to tell him our topic. My classmates were already rushing to tell the teacher their idea lest someone else steal it. That meant the usual abortion, death penalty, or drug use topics were out. I really couldn't think of anything and the teacher was slowly making his way through the remaining students like an executioner beheading criminals in a line. I have always thought that he would make a marvelous supervillain if he had a curly mustache, a tophat, and a cape. Eventually my name was called. I slowly dragged myself over to his desk. Even sitting down, he still seemed to tower over me. “What is your topic Cindy?” As usual in such desperate times, my mind turned to food. “Waffles are better than pancakes.” I figured that a waffle was just a differently shaped pancake with a nicer texture. “Hmm. Excellent topic. I look forward to your essay!” I survived to live yet another day.
