However, in an ironic twist of fate, college attendance has also grown through the years. This unfortunate combination has created a multibillion dollar industry which preys on students by providing them financial means aid via loans. By waving large amounts of money infront of fiscally strapped college students, this seemingly benevolent industry becomes a tantalizing trap. What looks like a golden necklace is actually a noose because ludacris interestrates turn an innocent little loan into a slippery slope of debt. Although student loans can help college students obtain the education they need, the loaning companies, at their core, are designed to turn as big of a profit as possible by taking advantage of the inevitable expenses of the students, burdening them with crippling debt, limiting their choices, and not contributing tosociety with meaningful investments.As Camilla Watson, author of “Reforming the Tax Incentives for Higher Education,” notes that the popularity of continuing to higher education has exponentially increased since the 1950s (1).
