Pitbulls were originally bred for fighting and killing. That included bear-baiting, bull-fighting, rat-baiting, and even fighting and killing each other. They eventually began being bred for other various reasons such as drug and explosive detection, search and rescue, water safety, therapy dogs, hunters, livestock drivers, catch dogs, and even family companions. Even with their “ruff” start and great follow through as caring dogs, pitbulls are still seen as “dangerous” or even “vicious” animals. I found that people already assume these things because of the way news articles are portraying pitbulls even if the dog is in NO WAY a pitbull and it’s not even actually standard for any breed of dog to be aggressive and is only taught or based on the way the animal is being treated. Pitbulls are amazing animals and most of the time will do anything to earn your love and trust by not just being cute but being loyal and protective. …show more content…
The history of the pitbull is in no way important to how they should be treated today. “Pitbulls are an extraordinary breed of dogs, but unfortunately a lot of people really do not like them.” People need to realize that pitbulls shouldn’t have a bad reputation for something they were trained and rewarded for. People should understand that pitbulls were taught to fight with not just pitbulls themselves but other animals. “Their history should be embraced, understood, and once we have a full understanding, we can control the future.” This is important because everyone should know the real side of pitbulls. Pitbulls are nice sweet animals that would make a great addition to any household. “They’re affectionate and clever, and a lot of people are under the assumption that they are misunderstood.” They are very good pets to have around the house as they are very smart and helpful. Pitbulls make great companions and are great animals to live
Pitbulls are mixes of different breeds, and nobody really knows where or how it originated. The CKC do not recognise a Pitbull as a breed, it’s more of a task definition in terms of its ability to fight. Nobody knows for certain what breeds pitbulls are made up of but it is thought that they stem from an American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terriers and Bulldogs also other types of Terrier dogs. This breed has been around since the Second World War and was actually used as a war dog and it has a very high working ability. In essence the Pitbull, are the dogs that people have made to fight specifically. The Pitbull’s personality can’t be exactly pinpointed because they are as unique as humans.
Pitbulls have been selected and breeded for their fighting ability. They were bred to be more athletic and agile for fighting other dogs. (Position Para. 3-4) Pitbulls were purposely bred for fighting and then adopted as family pets.
When you see a Pit bull, what is the first thing that goes through your mind? For some, it is a sense of fear and for others it is the thought that this breed is misunderstood. Have you ever stopped and thought about if the Pit bull breed is really a vicious breed, or are they just misinterpreted due to the reputation that others have given them along with the many myths that are attached to them? What about the owners of these precious animals? Do you ever think that they are the reason that their Pit bull may be a vicious dog? Many times people speculate too much
The pits that are raised in a fighting environment usually are the more aggressive dogs and the more likely to be euthanized because of their aggressive behavior. These fighting dogs are the reasons for most of the stereotypes directed towards the dog breeds. For example: “Pit bulls are the most aggressive dog breed” (17 Things...) Pit Bulls scored an 86.8% on the American Temperament Test or the ATT, which is a test that all dog breeds take in order to figure out the dog’s temper and aggression. The higher the score the better the dog, and the Pits just so happen to score second best, putting them above other common “nicer” household dogs like the Golden Retriever, the Beagle and the German Shepherd (Pisani). There are also many Pit Bulls being blamed for the actions of their owners, because of many of these actions it has caused many states to ban Pits. There are 17 states in the U.S. that have some type of pan against the breed (Pit Bull Bans (USA)...). Although these bans are places many criminals still continue to breed the dogs under ground and receive no
These breeds are only for experienced or past dog owners. Anyone who wants to own a pit bull or any breed of dog is encouraged to do some research beforehand. Every breed has their positives and negatives.
The only times pit bulls are mentioned in the news is if something bad happens. For example, several news reports stating signs of pit bull attacking but never the good side. The media also mistaken a different type of a breed and the blame goes to a pit bull. Also, reporters are fast to get a story about a pit bull attacking because they know it will sell. “One year old attacked by a pit bull” was a news report presented by CBC. This story just makes the reader think pit bulls are dangerous and not safe to the public society. Just to prove them wrong, pit bull were called “nanny dogs” because they were trustworthy to their owners. Nanny dogs also kept a lookout over the children and their families. Therefore, the media should get the better side of pit bulls so human realize how loyal and trustworthy they really
2. Pit bulls are loving, tender, faithful, and they are protective over the families they belong to. We, as owners and pet lovers, need to take the steps to ensure the image of this breed is restored; We need to speak up for the underdog.
Today 's pitbull is a descendant of the English bull baiting dog that was selectively bred to bite and hold large animals by their face and head. In the 1800’s, bull baiting was outlawed, so their owners turned to fighting their pit bulls against each other instead. The dogs were purposely not fed by their owners and thrown into a ring to fight for entertainment and
Pit bulls have a lot of history. Pit bulls been bred for human companionship, and since the 1900s, they have been bred for conformation showing as well. Pit bulls have been used as farm dogs, family dogs, military mascots, and all-purpose companions. In England, the Staffie Bull is known as the “The Nanny Dog” or “The Children’s Nursemaid” because of their placid and nurturing demeanor toward children. They say “Regardless of how gentle your dog is, all dogs of any breed should never be left alone unsupervised with children”.Throughout their history in America, pit bull dogs have
People should be allowed to keep pit bulls. Just because the breed as a whole has a bad reputation of being aggressive doesn't mean they all are. For example, in 1989 pitbulls was banned from denver because of a 21 year guy that decided to train the dog to be an vicious killing machine. And the pitbull has also been
When you see a Pit Bull, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? More times than not, it’s fear. But what comes to my mind is that this is my favorite kind of dog, and that it is very misunderstood and stereotyped by most people thanks to all the negative media. That’s why I’m writing about the truths regarding the American Pit Bull Terrier. They are always talked about as being very aggressive and vicious breed, but in fact they are a gentle companion. I would like to convince the people of Farmers Branch, Texas, that Pit Bull’s deserve to be considered as family pets.
Owning a pit bull in today’s day and age has one of two reactions: Either the person loves them or is terrified of them. There are so many myths about Pit Bulls and they are just that. Myths. Some of the myths that surround pit bulls are that they have “lock jaw” and they have a killer instinct that does not stop at just killing other animals. Pit bull advocates, such as myself, know that Pit Bulls have always been known as the “nanny dog” throughout history because of how much they love children and their loyalty to their families. Mean or vicious dogs come from ignorant, irresponsible owners. The bottom line is that not all pit bulls are bad.
The truth to this is yes pit bulls can be this way, but only if raised to be aggressive or not raised or trained correctly. Pit Bulls just like any dog they are good, friendly, and great pets. I think this stereotype is like any other stereotype it is true to some degree, but there is a background reason why. Whether people choose to believe it or not be their own opinion. People shouldn’t punish this dog because of what other dogs have done in the past, which they were taught to do. I think it all comes down to opinion and personal preference, some people do not like the look of a pit bull and some do. They have a distinct look and some think that because that look mean and tough that it will reflect in their personality. Which is completely not true. The fact is that pit bull bias is the exact same thing as racism. You cannot say that black people are dangerous because of the population of black inmates. Just the same as white people. You cannot say that an
In the United States, the term "pit bull" has been applied to breeds such as American and English bulldogs, Staffordshire bull terriers, American Staffordshire terriers and American Pit Bull terriers, as well as mixes of these and other breeds (Cohen, J., & Richardson, 2002). These animals are unfairly judged because what people put out on the media for most people to watch. The media brainwashes many people to think pit bulls are ferocious, uncontrollable, pit fighting animals and they started banning them in some states with the numbers growing. People should not judge a book by its cover. Pitbull’s have good qualities; some people may disagree or agree. Now is the time to agree because of what these dogs provide for the community. Let’s focus on the good qualities of a Pitbull has to offer that is not broadcasted to the media. Banning pit bulls will not stop the vicious attacks of dog biting.
Pit bulls are the most misunderstood dog breeds in the world. When people hear the word pit bull they automatically think of dogs fighting and attacking. When people say "pit bull" they're usually referring to a range of breeds and, often, a mixed-breed dog. (Lawrence, C Louisville Magazine Feb 2007) People think they are a very dangerous breed of dog. Because of this, some areas do not allow pit bulls and breeds like them. Pit bulls are the leading culprit of dog bites in America, but on the other hand, they are the gentlest dogs people will ever meet. The National Canine Temperament Testing Association
