Obesity effects 37.9 percent of American adults over 20 today. The annual medical costs for obesity in the United States is $147 million annually. (CNN Library) Not only are adults affected and uneducated by this problem, so are children. Because obesity raises many compelling health risks and concerns across America, and is continuing to rise, government policies should enforce regulations and monitor the nutrition of our nation before the problem becomes worse. Obesity has become a rising problem in the United States over the past couple of decades because of many reasons. Portion sizes have increased over the years meaning humans are consuming more calories, healthy foods such as fruits, and vegetables are more expensive than they used to be, and many are consuming processed foods, as well as junk food and desserts. It can be intriguing for someone to buy a Big Mac from Mcdonalds for less than the price of whole pound of apples at Target. Not only is this a cheaper option, but it is readily available and convenient to the consumer without having to go shopping in the grocery store. The typical American spends around $1,200 a year on fast food, which is quite a lot for just one person.(Value Penguin) Erik Schlosser points out “In the 1970s, people in the United States spent $6 billion on fast food annually. In 2000, they spent $110 billion.”(Livestrong) The fast food industry has grown, and most Americans don’t realize how much they are spending on fast food, and also
As years go by American weight struggle has been getting worse. People with diabetes today has more than double since 1994. While there are ways to help bring down obesity, most companies have not taken action. There are many factors to why obesity has only been increasing all these years.
Many studies have shown that obesity is not only around but it’s here to stay and it’s on the rise. In (the obesity blame game 2006) Lorraine Heller explained that “being overweight comes down to a simple balance: energy intake versus energy burned and a fundamental Change in lifestyle has resulted in the last part of the equation being increasingly ignored”. In today’s society many Americans want to have someone to blame, shoving bad food into one’s body at a fast food restaurant isn’t the peoples fault, it’s the fast food industries fault. Now that doesn’t sound right, now a days many people prefer to eat out in America people are always busy. When hungry and in a hurry there are many fast, convenient, and healthy items available. Many people who insist that fast-food chains are a main cause of obesity in America because there are a plethora of fast-food restaurants on every block with few healthy alternatives, are not looking at the whole picture. Mark Bittman stated “in 2010 the average American, regardless of weekly earnings, watched no less than an hour and a half of television per day. The time is there” (is junk food really cheaper?
If you can prolong your life, and make yourself feel better about who you are then why not overcome this overweight issue. In today’s world we are facing an epidemic that seems to be affecting even are young at an early age. We all know that obesity can have adverse effects on health, well-being, and relationship, and can be solved by eating organic food, exercising, and discipline. We are here to find out the different causes of obesity, and find out what we can do to overcome this fast growing epidemic. “Although people in the Unites States might not be eating more, they are gaining weight. According to the U.S Department of Agriculture, fat consumption by people in the United States has declined during past decades, but calorie expenditure has gone down as well. Adults are not burning the calories they are consuming, and as a result, obesity rates increased by 214 percent between 1950 and 2000. Two out of every three people in the U.S. were obese or overweight in 2010”. (Bird, 2011, March 26, p.1). They are several solutions that can be implemented to these causes, and some are individual, community, and government solutions. I feel it is everyone’s own responsibility to make they maintain their own health.
Eating healthy and exercising often, the two things seen as key against fighting obesity. While these are very important, they are not the only tools in the fight against obesity. Before we can rely solely on eating healthy and daily exercise, we need to reform how the issue of obesity is being attacked. Childhood obesity has become an exponentially growing epidemic that has no evidence of stopping anytime soon. The government needs to step in and help with the fight because of food deserts, faulty advertising, and nutrition guidelines, which are all factors out of the public's control. Once we figure out these issues, the real fight can begin.
Obesity is a growing epidemic in the American people, but what is the root of this seemingly unavoidable problem? According to David Zinczenko, it is the failings of the American society, but in the opinion of Radley Balko, it’s the facilitation of the government's support and the failure to take self-responsibility from the people themselves. They both have an opinion as to what the cause of obesity in America, but Zinczenko has the better argument. Through the use of real-life examples, refutation, and sound logic/reasoning Zinczenko writes a more persuasive piece than Balko.
Justin Timberlake, one of the most popular recording artists today, filmed a commercial for McDonald's. A spokeswoman for McDonald's said "the campaign is getting "buzz on the street." The song he sings in the commercial was also to be released as a full length single (MacArthur, 2003, p. 2).
Over one third of the US population suffers from obesity and overweight. According to a study reported by the NIH (National Institute of Health), more than 1 in 3 adults were considered to be overweight, and 1 in 3 adults were considered to be obese. Children are also victims to this growing epidemic, with 1 in 6 children/adolescents anywhere from 2 to 19 were considered to be obese. This is a growing problem, and it has been for the last 20 years in America.
I contemplate because of negative talk about this new way of learning and ask myself what is a Charter School? I want to become a part of a school culture that will think out of the box of the traditional way of teaching students. I have experienced years of continuous teaching strategy concepts of ever changing Statewide test that defines. the student abilities and level of learning. I don’t have a problem with testing students. The problem I have is that selective standards being only required to satisfy testing components while leaving some life management and organization skills out. The important skills that would be much beneficial as well would be balancing a budget sheet, professional awareness goals and critical thinking and problem
Obesity can be defined as, “a health condition of being grossly fat or overweight.” This disease is spread throughout the world and is especially common in the United States. Obesity can lead to many other illnesses like diabetes, heart attacks, high blood pressure, etc. Even though this condition can be deadly, there are many different methods to prevent it. Obesity has greatly impacted America. Instead of trying to find a cure for obesity, we can focus on educating people on ways that steer away from this unhealthy lifestyle.
Imagine a world where people can not go outside because their body is not able to move because of how much people weigh and need to stay inside where machines are helping monitor the health of the body. If the obesity epidemic and obesity related disease don't stop now that is how the future world will look like for the next generation and it does not seem nice. Back in the 1970’s people would have never expected a future like that because it was all about healthy foods and exercising regularly. Now in 2017 it is all about eating at fast food restaurants and binge watching shows on Netflix. Many people's mentality today is why go outside to exercise when there is technology as entertainment where the gossip and entertainment is at? People fail to realize that lying on the couch or in bed after eating is a higher risk for obesity. Personal responsibility is what people are failing to accept when it comes to obesity, blaming others for something people can become educated about seems easier. The media is also at fault for all the propaganda about unhealthy fast food, and not the healthy food that benefits the persons body. 18-26 year-olds have the chance to change this generation's mentality about obesity and change the future generation alongside the media who should change what is being advertised and make the people choose a healthier and better option.
Obesity is a very serious subject that a lot of people take lightly, especially us as Americans. America is the most obese country in the world. Statistics show that 300,000 people die a day in the United States of America due to obesity. This clearly shows that we have a serious problem that is massively underestimated. Obesity is also something that countries all across the world suffer from. For example, Australia is also one of the most obese countries in the world, and 50,000 people die a year from obesity in Australia. That’s 140 people who die per day in Australia. To solve the problem of obesity the prices of junk food should be raised and the prices of healthy food should be lowered and more convenient.
This generation is dying and no one is doing much about it. The people have no one to blame but themselves. They give into temptation and pay for food that is terrible for their health. Although is it really the people's fault? The food industries are made to finesse people into being consumers. Starting with making healthier foods extremely expensive and then making the unhealthy foods less than a couple buck plus and three times the healthy serving size. The current generation has to fix the current problem so the future generation will not have to face it too. Time is running out on this generation. Instead of blaming the people tell the food industries to change their whole ordeal and help parents educate their families on what really goes in their food.
Did you know that 61% of U.S. Adults are overweight? How about the fact that 19.6% of children are considered obese? A vegetarian lifestyle could be the answer to help preventing certain diseases.
America is regarded as a healthy country. Our medical care is far more advanced than most countries. In 2015 we spent around three trillion dollars on health care and research. We have some of the best doctors and best training for doctors. We have some of the fittest athletes and best training for them. We have numerous gyms and dieting supplements, yet our country is plagued with a nasty disease: Obesity. Obesity has become one of the largest killers here in America. Most people think it has as imple solution. The truth is it's much more complex than what people see on the outside. Obesity is a disease and needs to be treated like one.
In the United States, there are over 152,000 fast food chains, with McDonald’s menacingly taking the title for the largest. While these restaurants have created over thirteen million jobs, they have most certainly caused more harm than good. Three percent of Americans claim that they eat fast food every single day and twenty eight percent claim to eat fast food once per week, spending approximately a hundred dollars on fast food per month (“11”). Obesity is climbing to record highs for adults within America. With this being said, more than one-third of American adults are considered to be obese, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), obesity-related conditions including strokes, heart disease, type two diabetes, and certain types of cancer are some of the leading causes of preventable deaths in the United States. There are thousands of solutions to losing weight, but when dieting and exercise have failed, people can resort to surgery. Those who are in need of losing weight permanently should consider gastric bypass surgery because it is one of the most effective ways to lose the weight safely and quickly.
