In November 2012, voters in the states of Washington and Colorado voted for the approval of ballot initiatives having the objectives of regulating and legalizing marijuana, its production, possession, distribution, and use of various recreational and medical purposes. The unprecedented decisions taken by the two states posed a twofold predicament for President Barack Obama’s administration. Despite the decision by Washington and Colorado, marijuana is still an illegal substance under the federal statute, known as the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 which explicitly prohibits any activities associated with marijuana. Additionally, the law implements three drug treaties for controlling drugs of which the US is part of the treaty. Currently, marijuana is exclusively limited for medical research and scientific purposes. Can you imagine being just six-years-old and suffering from over three hundred violent seizures a week? From birth, Charlotte Figi suffered from a rare form of epilepsy, which caused these seizures. After trying everything to help Charlotte, her parents finally decided to try medical marijuana, and it worked! Charlotte still had seizures, but now, she had maybe two or three seizures a month instead of three hundred a week. Charlotte’s story and many similar stories, along with medical research and sound reasons, have caused the public’s opinion about marijuana to change in favor of legalizing it, and I agree. I strongly believe that marijuana, and especially medical marijuana, should be legalized across the entire
Equally important is the effect that marijuana has on the justice system. Resources are being used every day that could be allocated to a number of other pressing issues that are facing communities across the country. If marijuana is legalized, the resources of agencies of law enforcement would be able to focus on much more pressing issues. By legalizing marijuana, it will promote a reduction in street crimes and it will also take business from illegal drug dealers and direct it to the government. This would hopefully lead to a decrease in violence related to drugs in the United States ("Legalization of Marijuana"). Decreasing petty street crime and violence would make local streets safer. How do you measure happiness? Is your happiness totally dependent on the amount of freedom you have? By guaranteeing us the right to pursue happiness the government doesn’t promise to provide us with it. Government exists solely to grant and protect our freedoms, this includes protecting individuals from being harmed by others exercising their freedoms. The government should not legalize marijuana on the basis that every individual should be free to choose his or her own path to happiness. I am a firm believer in the individual's right to the pursuit of happiness under the constitution; however, I do not believe in the right of achieving immediate gratification at the expense of others.

The fact that Marijuana is still illegal is mind boggling to me. The fact that Marijuana, after being proven to have numerous medical benefits, and being proven to cause little to no harm whatsoever with long term use, is still labeled as a schedule one narcotic, is even more mind boggling to me. State and federal governments spend so much money trying to get rid of marijuana. State and federal government's spend even more locking up these "drug offenders" for the most harmless crime you can commit. This is a free country right ? So why are these marijuana users not free to put whatever it is they desire into their bodies? Now, of course there are violent crimes assosciated with marijuana, however a simple solution to that would be to legalize
