The first legislative attempt of gun control was in 1934; it started the fight between the National Rifle Association, who believed it was unfair to the law abiding citizens to limit their rights, and lawmakers wanting to limit the amount of crimes. The debate has grown and changed immensely t over the years, but the issue is still there (Magoon). This year in Colorado, Senator Vicki Marble, Representative Stephen Humphrey, and Representative Lori Saine have been the Prime Sponsors for the repeal of the ban of possession and sales of large capacity magazines (Repeal Ammunition Magazine Prohibition). This is known as Senate Bill 17-007; it states that part 3 of article 12 of title 18 of The Colorado Revised Statutes should be repealed and adds a safety clause stating that it needs to be implemented for the “public peace, health, and safety” (Concerning the Repeal of Certain Provisions Concerning Ammunition Magazines). Large Capacity Magazines (LCMs) are generally defined as holding ten rounds or higher, but in the case for Colorado it is defined as holding 15 rounds or higher (Large Capacity Magazines). SB17-007 was introduced January 11, passed through the Senate but was indefinitely postponed by the House as of March 22 (“Repeal Ammunition Magazine Prohibition - SB 17-007”). Senate Bill 17-007 will repeal the ban on large firearm magazines; it should be passed because the prohibition has not shown any decrease of deaths in mass shootings and infringes on America’s second amendment right. The overall goal for the ban of LCMs is to decrease the amount LCMs used in criminal activity, mass shootings in particular, resulting in less casualties and injuries. The premises is that if a gunman has a magazine holding up to thirty rounds he/she will not have to reload, therefore being able to fire off a substantial number of shots resulting in the higher potential for killing people. Not only will the amount of time it takes to reload affect the amount of shots he/she can take, but it also gives bystanders a chance to tackle and take down the shooter, or to escape while he/she is not shooting (Kleck). These are valid thoughts as to why a ban on LCMs would help increase the safety of many people, but they actually have
"We are dealing with the largest mass shooting in our state's history," Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (Tegna) On a peaceful November morning during a “Sunday service at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.” (Grinberg) A young man across the street from the church “was dressed in black "tactical-type gear" and wearing a ballistic vest he crossed the street in his car, got out and began firing he entered the church and continued shooting.”(Grinberg) During this time “a man who lives next door to the church grabbed his own rifle and engaged the suspect, The gunman dropped his "Ruger AR assault-type rifle" and fled. The neighbor chased after the gunman, police said. The chase ended when the shooter crashed his car about eight miles from
Plus if there is a mass killing the perpetrator could carry more than one gun and/or magazines, it only takes about a second to change an empty magazine for a full magazine so the limiting the number of bullets allowed in the magazine is useless because he could be using magazines he purchased before the ban was put in effect. Another thing is that the aurora movie theater shooting was in a “gun free” zone, so in consequence there was no person with a concealed carry weapon
just ignore bans. The only two things passing a law of this nature would accomplish
Gun control in the United States was first introduced in 1934 when legislation was drafted and passed in 1934 to impose new criminal penalties, along with regulations and taxes, on the machine guns and sawed-off shotguns preferred by the era's most notorious gangsters, largely in response to the bloody gun violence carried out by the likes of Al Capone and Bugs Moran. Congress added to the National Firearms Act with another round of new laws four years later. The Federal Firearms Act of 1938 put restrictions on the interstate guns and ammunition trade. It required, in many cases for the first time, for dealers to register themselves and keep records of their transactions (Kreig 6). Those laws were the first to cause debate and arguments about limiting guns and gun use for Americans. Gun control is the regulation of the selling, owning, and use of guns. This issue is so important because it could affect the use of firearms in this country and have an impact on the safety of our citizens and others around the world. It’s been a prevalent debate in American politics with many differing opinions. The debate even stretched past
Gun control for who? Given the recent tragedy in Las Vegas, Nevada, where a lone gunman killed over 50 people and injured hundreds, the discussion of gun rights a dispute in the country’s storied culture wars will fail in any substantial changes to current laws. While I strongly dislike hearing of senseless deaths, especially when they seem preventable with proper legislation, however I know of gun control problematic racist past; not everything is black or white.
“The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it” said Thomas Jefferson (insert citation). What would happen to American Citizens if there safety and protection was completely in the hands of Uncle Sam? How could a person live without fear? Gun control has been an issue that has concerned the United States for many years. While the legalizing of gun control specifically about high capacity magazines and assault weapons has only been a forethought, never passing all the way through lawmakers, it is a thought that many people have had, and is definitely a thought people are having as mass shootings are becoming more common. Advocates for these set of laws feel that guns are a threat to society and should be outlawed. There are many important arguments about whether or not guns are an inhumane part of American culture. The first of these is that many people are not in the correct state of mind to make a decision that can end lives. Another argument is that guns should be used to build up our country, to protect it, not to break it down. The third argument against gun control is that the use of guns has become outdated in the protection that our local law enforcement can provide. High capacity ammunition clips and assault weapons should be legal in the United
Raise your hand if you have ever been victimized by a gun or know someone who has lost their life due to a firearm. Realize that if gun control laws in the united states were more strictly enforced a lot less of us will be raising our hands right now. The United States has a problem with gun violence. Great mass shootings and also school shootings have occurred in the past few years, bringing a great grief to America. Parents are scared to send their children to school or even attend any type of event due to these horrific events that have happened. Some Americans even want to ban the right to bear arms.
Banning assault weapons and toughening gun control laws across the United States would save countless of innocents lives in our school systems and in public. When referring to gun control laws In these next paragraphs, we are defining gun control laws as a set of policies or laws that that will supervise the manufacturing, transfer, modification or use of any firearms by citizens in the United States. I will be presenting sources that will proof my said statement with facts and statistics from trusted news outlets and other reliable media. I will also be presenting arguments against my stance to further prove the validity of my statements.
On December 14, 2012, a man walked into an elementary school with three semi-automatic weapons. He killed twenty children and six teachers. The nation was shocked and hurt, yet nothing changed. On October 1, 2017, a man brought twenty-three guns into his hotel room in Las Vegas. He killed fifty-nine people and injured more than five hundred. If the present follows history, this event will change nothing. Every year congress fails to make any considerable effort to stop gun violence. The news is always full of coverage of mass shootings, but guns are also used for murder and suicide every day. The United States must past common sense legislation to limit the gun violence in America.
From 1988 to 2001, the usage of anti-depressant drugs in the general public increased by four-hundred percent (Swanson). The mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary took place in December of 2012, and during 2014, firearms were used in 88 percent of teen homicides, and 41 percent of teen suicides (“Suicidal Teens”). On February 28th, 2017, the Trump administration repealed a firearms regulation that prevented mentally disabled persons from owning guns. At the same time, teenage mental illness is on the rise, specifically in cases of depression and anxiety. A report from the Surgeon General shows that over 90 percent of adolescents that committed either suicide or homicide have or had a mental disability. Mental disabilities such as depression and anxiety put teenagers at a high risk for homicides and suicides. Teenagers who are stressed due to school, lack of parenting, puberty, bullying, and other factors can develop depression, anxiety or another mental illness. Allowing these teens easy access to firearms proves time and time again to be very dangerous. In some cases, the families of these teens have never been assessed to see if they can responsibly store firearms. The only background check performed is on the owner of the firearm, meaning that a person may own the weapon even if another family member living with them legally cannot. Loose gun control laws allow families with physiologically ill children to have access to firearms, without first checking to see if the disabled children in the home are responsible enough to be around said firearms. Repealing gun control laws instated by the Obama administration will cause an increase in adolescent firearm-related homicides, suicides, and tragedies similar to the one at Sandy Hook Elementary.
Gun violence has risen in America tremendously. According to the White House.com, Over the past decade in America, more than 100,000 people have been killed because of gun violence and millions more have been the victim of assaults, robberies, and other crimes involving a gun. (Office of the Press Secretary). The most recent case where a gun was used to carry out an act of violence was the Las Vegas shooting that took place on October 1st,2017. During a concert, perpetrator Stephen Paddock opened fire on to the crowd: 58 fatalities, leaving 546 injured, and then turning the gun on himself. This is only one of the many mass shootings that has risen the call for gun control. On The other hand, Citizens continue to fight for their right to
America is a country where guns are becoming more of a common household item, more people have been buying guns to protect their families. While guns are becoming more popular in homes, gun violence and crime is becoming more common as well. As more people are dying everyday from gun violence and crime, the government and the people of the country are beginning to take the incidents into account and are beginning to build up more laws around gun control. But with these laws many people have begun to not agree with them. Americans are questioning whether having more gun control will help, or if it will create more chaos and violence in their country.
Every year thousands of people are killed by guns, including babies and young adults. Families are left broken from deaths of their loved ones. “Gun homicides were 10% higher in states with restrictive CCW laws, according to a study spanning 1980-2009(“Concealed Carry Law”). Guns should be illegal but since they are not the law should say that they are required to be register. Unregistered guns are going to cause more accidental deaths for a lot of people. Also they put more then just adults in danger, and they expose children to the danger as well. States make this bill legal because they think it helps.
Gun violence is unpredictable and can happen to anyone, no matter how old or young. Setting policies that regulate the manufacturing, variety, or possession of firearms to the general public can influence a decrease of chaotic gun violence. Some might think that taking away these privileges or firearms will just harm the public by leaving us defenseless but in fact will make us safer. Limiting the production and variety of firearms can benefit ending mass shootings and other related violence. Making laws or policies that are more careful about the possession of firearms will benefit civilian safety. Setting stricter procedures to obtain a firearm will help not get them in the wrong hands. Gun control is a controversial topic, but it needs to be brought up to end the unnecessary violence once and for all.
Following the tragic events of September 11th, 2001 the world was shocked, our country had been attacked. The United States of America was no longer safe, nearly 3,000 people were killed. Our nation's response, go to war with the country that caused all this heartache. Spend a decade looking for the man (Osama Bin Laden) that caused this harrendence attack on America.
