Francis DeBernardo, head of a LGBT Catholics organization, has said that "many gay and lesbian couples are leading lives of heroic devotion to each other, their children, and their communities. I hope and pray that you will reflect not only on the harm that this decree will cause but also the good that can occur if you withdraw it." (Crary). People who like the same sex shouldn't be categorized in society as people to be frowned upon when they lead a good example, but others disagree. This is why the discussion of same-sex couples is so controversial. Gay marriage is a very important issue in modern society in the U.S because it is more accepted than what it used to be by everyday people and household life is healthier than in opposite sex marriages; unfortunately, it is still frowned upon by many and some business owners still decline service due to discrimination.
It is currently 2017 and the idea of gay marriage being such a hot topic in the U.S is astonishing. A survey showed that about sixty-two percent of citizens wanted same-sex marriage while roughly thirty-two percent didn't. Back in the year 2004, only about thirty percent of the public supported same-sex marriage and sixty-three percent opposed (Milligan). The numbers seemed to have switched positions over the last thirteen years. Moreover, an estimation on July 1, 2016 showed that around 323,00,000 people currently residing in America, so knowing that the acceptance rate is over half is quite impressing. (CITE?) Since some states have allowed the marriage of same-sex couples, the amount of people who have gotten married has gone up. According to the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, more than 547,000 same-sex couples married in the U.S. This number includes around 157,000 couples who had gotten married within the two years of the state's law passing of same-sex marriage (Crary). Those citizens are about half a million people who are legally married. This fact should show the government that a good portion of our population is more than likely to be gay, bi, or lesbian.
Support for gay marriage has increased dramatically over the past few years. Unfortunately, there are some people who still frown upon it. For example, some business
The United States of America was founded as a secular sanctuary for ideals like freedom, equality, and tolerance – few will argue against that. Over its history American culture has radically evolved as it strived to meet the ideals its nation was based upon, making changes like ending slavery and providing legal equality for women and minorities, changes that at the time seemed absurd but today are unquestionable merits that define what an “American” is. The quest to reach the ultimate utopian society continues today as true Americans fight the evils of ignorance, stubborn bigotry and the fear to change that still manifest themselves in a large portion of U.S. citizens, preventing this nation from moving forward. One of the outstanding minorities still left to be granted the ideals of freedom, equality, and tolerance are homosexuals trying to obtain the right to marry the person they want to spend the rest of their life with, regardless of gender. Same-sex marriages should be recognized in the eyes of the U.S. government in accordance with its responsibility to provide all American citizens equal freedoms.
On June 24th, 2016, the Supreme Court legalized same sex marriage. According to The Williams Institute UCLA School Of Law, approximately nine million adults in americans are apart of the LGBT, not including the american youth and the others who are not out (Gates 1). With that said, these nine million adults are different compared to the others surrounding them. The LGBT has finally gotten their rights to marry whomever they want, and some people are against the idea due to their beliefs. Even if same sex marriage is against someone’s religious beliefs, should it be look down on? Homophobic statistics are splitting the nation, same sex marriage should not be controlled by the government, and churches aren't forced to unwillingly marry homosexuals.
Throughout the years, society has slowly started to embrace gay culture and has begun to accept same-sex marriage in a positive way. It started with the late 1800s and early 1900s where same-sex marriage or gay culture was frowned upon. It then led on to the late 1900s where people began to accept it and fight for those who were treated unreasonably. Later on, it led to the 2000s where majority of the population supported same-sex marriage along with the fact that it was officially legalized in Canada. Views on same-sex marriage have altered in such a drastic way from decades ago to now, but it has definitely changed in an extremely positive manner.
The LGBT community in the United States has always had massive difficulty fitting into our society. For many years they put up with constant mistreatment and other forms of abuse coming from the those who do not agree with their lifestyle. They have for long advocated for the acceptance of their existence and punishment for crimes committed against them. One of the hardest battles the community has had to face was the right to marry in a society that still holds the values of a traditional relationship which is between a male and female. The struggle was quite harsh but it all paid off by 2015 when the supreme court granted gay couples the right to marry. This historical decision did not go without outcry and criticisms. Most of the dissatisfaction came from those who hold very religious values and beliefs that claims homosexuality is a sin. Religion has always been a part of the American way of life since the nation's founding and with that homosexuality has been demonized throughout our society. Now that gay couple possess the legal rights to have a marriage license, religious companies and/or stores are now denying service to LGBT couples as they believe it sinful on their behalf to even take part. Many people gay or straight who fought for gay rights believe these is pure discrimination and that stores should not have the right to deny service for any customer for any reason. However, this belief is unconstitutional and goes
In the past few years all 50 states have legalized same sex marriage. The problem is same sex marriage is still not widely accepted in this American society. When people are getting arrested because they refuse to do their job and give out gay marriage licences that means there is a problem with the way that same sex couples are being treated. Gay marriage is a major hot button issue in America right now. To allow marriage or to not allow marriage has evoked a large argument that has caused many riots and problems. Gay marriage is the right for two people of the same gender to marry. But what most people do not think about is the benefits of marriage to this community of people. Society should work harder on accepting same sex marriage because it is not just about being happy (but that is a benefit), but it is a matter of decisions over life or death, money, and the life of children.
Gay marriage has been a recent controversy for many reasons. Many people (religious conservatives) believe that same-sex marriage is immoral, sinful, and threatens the traditional structure of a family. But gay and lesbian supporters feel marriage is a right that everyone should have, backed by the Due Process and Equal Protection of the Fourteenth Amendment. It has been proven that the outlook on gay marriage has changed drastically based simply on the fact that younger people had supported it and it just took time to gain enough approval from enough of the country to legalize it. Since most of 18-29 year-olds of 2006 supported same-sex marriage, “two-thirds of Americans think that same-sex marriage will eventually be legal in the United
Over the course of the last several decades, attitudes in the U.S. about same-sex marriage have been shifting from conservative to more liberal. Many factors such as change in attitude of older generations, as well as wider acceptance among younger generations, have contributed to this shift in outlook. But even with the support the gay and lesbian community has been gaining, many still oppose same-sex marriage and rights’, and most states still ban the legalization of it. Even with all the opposition though, within the next thirty years, acceptance of same-sex marriage will continue to grow resulting in changes in law that allow for same-sex marriage in most states.
Legalizing gay marriage has given America a troubling debate throughout a majority of the states. With only thirty-seven states allowing legal gay marriage, the other thirteen have either banned it or are still deciding (unknown, 2015, para 1). Gay marriage is seen as different and wrong to so many people in America that is has become sickening. People do have their differences and as Justin Timberlake once said, “We’re people and we’re different, all of us. And we should be using our differences to bring ourselves closer together” and with this being said, everyone is equal to one another in different ways (Timberlake, 2014, 10). For example, two people could have two different religions, which is different, but also equal in the sense
In 2000, this policy had an approval of 39 percent. In 2010 gay marriage has increased in popularity in all fifty states. The popularity of gay marriage has increased most rapidly in the states where gay rights were already relatively popular in the 1990s, with numbers over 50 percent. The growing mood of acceptance is possibly tied to an increase in the percentage of people who claim to know someone who is gay, lesbian, or bisexual. More than 7 in 10 people, says Wellner (2001), claim they know someone who is gay or lesbian, up from 55 percent in 1998. Over time, as more Americans interact professionally and socially with members of the gay and lesbian community, the acceptance of diverse sexual orientations has begun to increase.
In the present time, marriage between two people of the same sex is legal in 37 states and the District of Columbia. During the course of the United States’ history, people have fought discrimination. People has battled to recognize equality for racial minorities, women, people with disabilities, and immigrants. As a result, denying some people, the option to marry due to their sexual orientation is discriminatory and creates the idea of a second of class citizens. I am pro-gay marriage not only for what I have stated before but also for the following disclosure.
In today’s society, there are certain stereotypical people that are uninterested in gay or lesbian marriage. Everyone should have the right to decide on who they would like to marry. Gay marriage should be legal and a non-punishable offense because it can prevent teenage suicides, more children will be adopted, and people will not feel like second-class citizens.

Gay marriage has been a controversial topics for years, especially during the 2004 presidential debate. Political figures, churches, and citizens seem to have their own views on this subject. People should be able to marry whomever they want and they shouldn't have the fear to be judged and have the same rights of everybody else becasue they are people just like us. Gay marriage has affected the country in many ways. It was legalized just two years ago by the Supreme Court ruling it (www.theatlantic.com). I chose this topic because people should do what they want and marry who they want so they have the same rights as everybody else. There was 14 states that did not allow gay marriage before it was legalized but when the supreme court
The civil marriage rights movement and pros for same sex couples began in the 1970’s, but it wasn’t until May 2004 same sex marriages were recognized as a legal union (Hack, Boyer, & Galupo 1). Same sex marriages have really increased over time because people have strides in the marriage equality movement. This movement has led to successful legalization of gay and lesbian marriages in New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Iowa, New Hampshire, and Washington D.C and now in every state in the United States. After a long history of discrimination between lesbians and gay individuals today has encounter more societal acceptance than ever before because people has actually stop caring if they could get married. American people has shown a more acceptance of civil or legal unions over the course of the past
Same-sex marriage has been an issue among society for many years. Not all people understand there is no ban on same sex-marriage nor is it illegal. In all fifty states there are couples of the same sex who live together, ones who choose their professional job to be in a workplace where joint benefits are offered, and ones who choose a religious community which accepts their relationship. Those who believe this is an issue and feel it should be illegal were likely raised to believe it is wrong to marry someone of the same gender. Whether these people in society were raised by what their religion believes or what their families have
