When people hear these three words, many people would probably become disgusted or full of judgements. Shame whoever these words are describing, because they are seen as people who can't appreciate the inner beauty. Simple three-lettered word, F-A-T, can make people’s smile turn upside down. Or the sound of tattoos with the two Ts forms empty fears of realistic tiger on people’s arms? And those two words, plastic surgery automatically display to the mind- round silicons and black marks outlining the ideal face. Recalling one time, I mention to other people I need to go on a diet. And due to my unhealthy health record, many people discouraged me and told me not to go on a diet. It became quite annoying to explain the definition. People …show more content…
The last cool fact about fat is the ones on the buttock. Imagine it without the fat! People will be sitting on bones! Appreciate those fats! I have always concerned about my weight because I thought that fat was the reason I have so many health issues. Unfortunately, I was born with those. One event that gave me trauma related to fat was because of my grandmother, who had cervical cancers. I was the caretaker for her. The changing diapers and trying to feed her are not easy. The medications make my grandmother sleepy most of the time and it don’t really help when most of her teeth became bad. Her intake was small, but her body uses a lot of energy to battle the tumors. As her caretaker, I watched how she got skinnier and skinnier. One time when I was changing her diapers, I was shocked by the blood far away from her cervical area. Taking a deeper look, the bone, on her last spinal cord, pierced her thin skin due to the lack of fat. With extreme pains, even though she was on morphine and didn’t feel the pain, every drop of those blood were real. The evolution about how people view fat is interested. In the old days and some places in the modern world, fat was considered as an expression of wealth. You have to have money to be fat right? However, modern society of standard body mass index varies for different countries. I was in China for the summer and 118 lbs was viewed as fat for a 5’2 person like me. In America, that weight is considered healthy and yet I was

Since the 1980’s scholars and medical professionals have branded obesity as a disease of epidemic proportions in order to instill fear into the substantial overweight population of America so that they may begin slimming down, whether through professional, unconventional, unreliable, or sometimes unsafe methods. Constant negative portrayal of excess body fat has led society
The more people tried to treat this problem-often unsuccessfully-the more it came under the auspices of the medical profession,” (9). Because our view of body image over time, we have viewed overweight people differently. We constantly emphasize cultural expectations and force them upon ourselves and others. However, beauty standards weren’t always this definite. Our standards gradually changed from fluid to uncompromising and rigid.
I claim that in American culture, a thin body is held as the "original", normal body; whereas obesity is viewed as a `temporary disruption' to the balance of the body. According to our cultural understanding, an obese body is viewed as being in the process of constant transformation. The idea of a permanently fat person is unacceptable and an obese body must be standardized and normalized. The goal is to transform and
They view fatness as pleasure and always set structures which help to explore the desires and experience of fat people in any way possible. The embodiment of disobedience explains the cultural deviations in beauty criteria and some related cultural and social practices (Lee 246). In the analysis of media frames of fat bodies, it is prudent to engage in fat studies pedagogy and communicate any research findings in an effort to help the fat people regain courage and their well-being in the community. Some ambiguous pleasures provide a valuable complement to sex and sexuality within and beyond the context of the society. The moral anxieties around the young bodies provide a useful historical and political account on cultural shift (Rahelu 305). For instance, the African Diaspora has for a while displayed resistance to any other culture which indulges into fat anxiety. Based on culture and the understanding of sex as an element of a person, implies that women are allowed to see sexual desires as part of their self (Lee 247). The pleasure fair of fatness acts as the key reason why most fat people are so happy with their bodies. However, the weight gained has nothing to do with gender or sexual activities in a relationship because, in most instances, some people weight gain is associated with a sense of security in a
Obesity is a disease unlike others - it heavily influences the risk of getting other diseases. Everyone fears having to succumb to cancer, diabetes, or other fatal diseases, yet obesity almost guarantees the contraction of at least one of these. The article, “Killer Fat”, written by Mariana Gosnell and Fernando Botero states that, “A survey released last year by the World Heart Federation concluded that most Americans are unaware that visceral fat is a leading risk factor for heart disease—even though, by one estimate, almost 46 percent of adult Americans have an excess of it.” (Gosnell, Botero, “Killer Fat”). Even if Americans were aware
In the 60s, doctors used such arcane surgeries as stomach stapling and intestinal bypass to curb the "problem" of fatness. Now, we have a million diets which admittedly can make people skinny for a while but eventually leave them fatter than they were initially. Because the body, and the heart specifically, is forced to deal with differing body sizes, various medical problems occur. While many will tell you being fat is bad for one's health, a fat person dieting and then getting fat again is much worse.
I chose this topic because I believe that America needs a better understanding of Obesity, so one can prevent and treat Obesity to improve the lives of those affected. I also have an uncle who has been affected greatly by this disease. By writing this paper, I am spreading the word about the harmful and life threatening effects of Obesity, which might prevent the spreading of the disease or save a life.
People can suffer from other diseases that cause visible weight gain. After reviewing a patient’s experience of having thyroid cancer and beating it, there was clearly a change within her physical appearance. The thyroid gland controls specific hormones within the body and has partial control in weight, heart rate, and body temperature.(Thyroid cancer information) After an extended period of time, the patient was experiencing pain in her throat and could not swallow food properly. She went to the doctor only to find out she had cancer and must have surgery. She underwent surgery and came out just fine. After a while, it was clearly visible that she had lost a bit of weight, especially in her neck. There are
I am fat. I am Fat. When we, as a society, discuss ‘fat’, it is not so much an adjective as it is an identity. The person who is fat is therefore defined by their fat rather than described as someone who has fat, which is why the said fat person starts off her college essay with “Hi, I’m Cyndi and ‘I am fat’” rather than “Hi, I’m Cyndi and ‘I have fat, along with many other more appropriate and exemplary things to offer’”. What does the word ‘fat’ then connote for a person in a social context?
If you can prolong your life, and make yourself feel better about who you are then why not overcome this overweight issue. In today’s world we are facing an epidemic that seems to be affecting even are young at an early age. We all know that obesity can have adverse effects on health, well-being, and relationship, and can be solved by eating organic food, exercising, and discipline. We are here to find out the different causes of obesity, and find out what we can do to overcome this fast growing epidemic. “Although people in the Unites States might not be eating more, they are gaining weight. According to the U.S Department of Agriculture, fat consumption by people in the United States has declined during past decades, but calorie expenditure has gone down as well. Adults are not burning the calories they are consuming, and as a result, obesity rates increased by 214 percent between 1950 and 2000. Two out of every three people in the U.S. were obese or overweight in 2010”. (Bird, 2011, March 26, p.1). They are several solutions that can be implemented to these causes, and some are individual, community, and government solutions. I feel it is everyone’s own responsibility to make they maintain their own health.
Eating healthy and exercising often, the two things seen as key against fighting obesity. While these are very important, they are not the only tools in the fight against obesity. Before we can rely solely on eating healthy and daily exercise, we need to reform how the issue of obesity is being attacked. Childhood obesity has become an exponentially growing epidemic that has no evidence of stopping anytime soon. The government needs to step in and help with the fight because of food deserts, faulty advertising, and nutrition guidelines, which are all factors out of the public's control. Once we figure out these issues, the real fight can begin.
When talking to a person who has been dealing with obesity all of his life I was stunned by what I heard from him. The person I interviewed was Michael Jean-Baskin. Michael has been one of my lifelong friends since middle school. We attended Crystal Lake Middle which is a few miles away from my cozy south Florida home. Believe me I am a guy and we all have our share of size jokes for one another which was guys just being guys but let anyone else say anything about Michael and we had a serious problem with it. In this interview Michael talked to me about his life and the different times he felt uncomfortable in his own skin. But believe it or not we also talked about his happiness and him finding comfort and confidence in his size.
Justin Timberlake, one of the most popular recording artists today, filmed a commercial for McDonald's. A spokeswoman for McDonald's said "the campaign is getting "buzz on the street." The song he sings in the commercial was also to be released as a full length single (MacArthur, 2003, p. 2).
Everybody has their own opinions, but who is truly to blame for children eating street food often? It is a rising problem that children are choosing large meals in comparison to small meals that parents are purchasing for them. People becoming overweight is an issue that has been rising since the 1970s. At young ages, they are experiencing diseases and conditions associated with obesity which was never an issue before the 1970s. Since the 1970s, the obesity epidemic has started rising as an issue due to latch key kids, divorced parents and boxed foods becoming popular for teens to make at home alone. In the 1970s, the only term for obesity was being overweight, then as more children became overweight it was known as obesity by the late 1900s. America's millennials were becoming more introduced to processed foods and supersizing of those foods which made them gain weight rapidly. It is up to the young adults of now to fix the obesity epidemic by changing the way they are eating through educating themselves. They are the future parents and lawmakers that will hopefully decrease obesity in future children and people. Millennials and fast food companies need to take a step forward and reduce the amount of people becoming overweight by taking personal responsibility for the issue and promoting healthier foods.
