Cannabis has been used for over 6000 years without its legality being questioned until the 1930's when the United States Government criminalized its possession. Now seventy years later, its prohibition is being reconsiderat both State and Federal levels of the government. The push for legality has never had as much support as it does now, with the legalization of medical marijuana in 20states, decimalization in 16 states, and 2 states that allow commercial cultivation, manufacture, and sale of cannabis. An overwhelming majority of the United States population, including me, see the legalization of cannabis as a profitable and harmless idea. A majority of the population wants marijuana legalization, but there are still those who don't want it legalized. People have many different arguments against legalization. One of the …show more content…
The damage can only be done through heavy drug usage on a daily basis, which is extremely rare for teens according to an ABC report. The next argument is that marijuana is addicting. The fact is marijuana is less addicting than many other drugs, including alcohol, painkillers, and tobacco. Recent studies have suggested that sports drinks, soda, and other sugary drinks are more addicting then marijuana. The reason why many marijuana users go to rehab is that if they are arrested for possession of marijuana, their jail-time or fines are greatly decreased if they go to a rehab center as part of their sentence. Because of this, the reports of how many people are addicted to marijuana are greatly exaggerated. The final argument I will be addressing is the typical "stoner" (a person who regularly uses marijuana) stereotype. The stereotype is that people who use or used marijuana won't be successful in life. This stereotype has and will continue being proven wrong. The most relevant example is the President of the United States Barack Obama, who as a teen and young adult used marijuana regularly. He is not the only
Legalizing marijuana for health and municipal purposes in the United States Of America, personally I think it's a great idea. A lot of other people don't think legalizing marijuana is the greatest idea in the world, they think that people will use it in the wrong ways and not to help with any diseases that it can kill. Legalizing marijuana in the United States should be done because it can help people with diseases that they can’t fix with just any medicine, it can kill most deadly diseases, and it keeps people from taking multiple pills a day.
Have you ever wondered when and why marijuana was made illegal? The herbal plant, commonly used in medicines, was not considered a drug in the early 1900s. The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 banned the use and sales of marijuana. This act was put in place due to careless slander. Marijuana, in America should be legalized because it is safer than alcohol and tobacco, marijuana funds gangs and cartels, and marijuana can replace toxic, addictive pharmaceuticals.
The legalization of marijuana is, and has been a heavily disputed issue for decades. On one hand, marijuana could lead to a medical breakthrough, or at least provide relief to cancer and AIDS patients. On the other hand, legalizing a drug could expose it to too broad an audience. As a drug, marijuana has never proven to be anywhere near as harmful as cigarettes or alcohol. Each year in the United States, 400,000 people die from tobacco, 50,000 from alcohol, and from marijuana, zero. Regardless of what side one may take to this argument, there are some causes to this marijuana debate that everyone should know. Marijuana was not always illegal, and the reasons behind the history of narcotic regulation are interesting when viewed from
Marijuana is a drug that is spreading all around the world and is now proven to be the most beneficial drug out there. More than 25 million Americans annually use it each year. If the country legalized it then everyone would have more jobs available to go around such as harvesters, dispensary clerks, distributors, or croppers. Thus, the unemployment rate is lowered and America could make more money if they taxed it (Jack). Not only could they tax it but also save more money because they would not have to lock up those people getting arrested every year. That way America could lower the country’s debt and then there is a lot less people in prisons. It would save the country billions of dollars each year and make billions more each year. This country needs to tax anything they can because taxing marijuana would bring in so much more revenue and America could also trade with other countries. Marijuana has also proved to help cure diseases such as glaucoma, Alzheimer’s, and other cancer diseases. It is proven that it can help alleviate pain, regain their appetite, help in slowing down tumor growth, help with dizziness, and help a patient go to sleep. THC, which is the main ingredient in marijuana, helps a cancer patient to gain back their sense of smell and taste so that person can regain their appetite. Medical Marijuana (oil) helps the dizziness by stopping their vomiting and keeping their food down and gain weight. Medicinal Marijuana has proved to help
Illegal drug use is a huge part of American culture and one the most controversial of those drugs is marijuana; its technical name is Cannabis Sativa. But whether you call it cannabis, marijuana, pot, reefer, weed, bud, herb, Mary Jane, hemp, grass or wacky tabacci, it is still illegal in the United States. Actually, all over the world the deliberation rages about the harm or benefits that marijuana has to offer. Attempts to legalize it in the United States have been going on since the Marijuana Tax Act was introduced in 1937 and have thus far largely failed. The debate whether or not to legalize marijuana seems to circle around numerous points, including the recreational use verses being a gateway to
Everyone has an opinion on the reoccurring subject of cannabis legalization. Some people are against cannabis just because it is against the law. While others believe cannabis usage goes along with free will and that the government has no right to interfere. Some say marijuana is a gateway drug, leading to the use of more serious drugs. Still, a percentage of the population believes hemp is okay and legal growing in the U.S. could benefit our economy, with an abundance of uses that would be a better choice for the environment and our health, than other options we currently seek. There are many reasons that people want cannabis legalized, and many fears for which they don’t. Whatever the opinion, people need to
The legalization of marijuana has been a debate that has been going on for the past decade. Many Americans (about 80 percent surveyed) do believe in the legalization while others disagree. With the correct facts in place, it is easy to prove that the legalization of marijuana is a huge benefit to the American people and those who disagree are disagreeing for the wrong reasons. One reason it should be legalized is marijuana can be used for medical purposes, others say it can help lower the debt in America by taxing marijuana. Many of these arguments favoring marijuana are outlined in this paper.
There seems to be a constant and never-ending debate over the legalization of marijuana. I was not entirely educated on marijuana until my sophomore year of high school. Marijuana comes from a hemp plant and contains many chemicals, one of the many chemicals is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and THC gives the “high” feeling. Even after I knew the basic facts I still did not understand the affect it had on people. I never saw individuals that smoked marijuana as bad people, I just knew that I personally would never do it myself. I was always somewhat afraid of the drug, but after past research I discovered that it actually has many benefits. I strongly believe that marijuana should be legalized everywhere. One reason marijuana should be legalized is because of the amazing medical benefits it contains that have been researched thus far. Another reason marijuana should be legalized is because it is no more harmful than alcohol or tobacco. Some people argue though that taking marijuana is morally wrong. Some individuals see it as morally wrong but it is something some people enjoy and should be able to freely. Marijuana is not this evil drug that most people assume it is.
In a country where tobacco products and alcohol are legal, I have always wondered, why not cannabis? Why did this plant still have the stigma of being illegal when it does not cause any deaths, is not nearly as physically addicting, nor as harmful as its legal counterparts? Clearly, the law of marijuana prohibition is one that is up for debate and one that is up for change. Currently, many state laws have been passed that are either decriminalizing marijuana or allowing it for purely medicinal purposes. Although these laws are moving towards legalization, they do not come close to the actual goal. The definition of “legalization” advocates are striving to reach refers to legalized wholesale production, distribution, and sale to all marijuana users even for recreational purposes. Citizens have to realize that legalization is a realistic change that our country might be facing in the near future. Although liberals are leading the fight to end prohibition while conservatives are helping the law stand firm, this fight should not be one divided by political party. Every individual ought to be educated on the issue before saying yes or no to legalization. Before voting on this issue, I ask: What would the country actually be like if marijuana was legal?
Marijuana use has been a very prominent issue and continues to be major source of controversy in the United States. Although many claims have been made about marijuana use in recent times, the truth about this plant is slowly coming forward. Unfortunately, a heavily skewed perception of marijuana and marijuana users as a result of years and years of misinformation and propaganda further encourages ignorance on the topic of its legalization, which still continues to be spread due to many private interests who still want marijuana to remain illegal for their own personal gain, despite all its proven benefits.
I believe marijuana should be legalized in the United States. The reasons being are that; legalization of this drug would be a better and less costly way to help those who are affected by cancer, taxes can be placed on this drug which would benefit the economy and create jobs, and keeping the drug illegal doesn’t stop people from partaking in the activity.
The legalization of marijuana has been debated to be a harmful substance for so long. Marijuana is a drug that is always being talked about all over the media. There is constant debate on whether it should be legalized or not. It's also, debated on if it were to be legalized, how would it would affect society. All these questions are things the government takes into account every day. There is a big divide between people’s beliefs on this matter. Some people think it should be, others think it shouldn’t, and some think it should be with some modifications on the usage. When you look at the benefits, there is no question that marijuana should be legal throughout the entire country. There are way more positive things that could come out of
The legalization of marijuana is a controversial topic. Jimmy Carter, the United States 39th president, said, “Penalties against possession of a drug should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself; and where they are, they should be changed. Nowhere is this more clear than in the laws against possession of marijuana in private for personal use... Therefore, I support legislation amending Federal law to eliminate all Federal criminal penalties for the possession of up to one ounce [28g] of marijuana.” When evaluating the pros of marijuana to the cons, it is clear that the current punishments against the use of marijuana are doing more harm than good, and the legalization of the drug can create many benefits for the United and its people.
Marijuana ruins peoples lives. The dangers of marijuana are downplayed by the media. They portray marijuana as a fun and harmless substance to smoke with your buddies on the weekend, but marijuana ruins people’s lives. Marijuana lowers motivation and reasoning abilities leading to depression, torn relationships, and difficulty holding onto
Side effects include reduced IQ, poor school performance (and more likely to drop out), greater change of being unemployed, and antisocial behavior. People are more likely to commit crime while under the influence of marijuana. Along with social problems, weed also is not good for your body. It is a common misconception that marijuana smoke is less harmful than tobacco, however they both cause lung taring. Marijuana inhale more deeply that tobacco users, leading to greater lung tarring exposure. These damages to the lungs can cause chronic bronchitis, coughing, and wheezing. Not only the lungs are affected, the brain also obtains long term deterioration therefore decreasing the nervous system’s efficiency, along with the immune system being impaired, leaving you to a greater risk of
