Persuasive Essay: Judging An Image Through High School

Having escaped rule from a tyrannical British government, the United States was founded on ideals of freedom and equality for all people. These fantasies of universal egalitarianism turned out to be merely that: fantasies. American history is full of stories of the oppressed struggling to get the rights they deserve and of the controversy over these issues that consequently ensues. “The Hypocrisy of American Slavery” by Frederick Douglass and “We Shall Overcome” by Lyndon B. Johnson are two speeches made confronting two of these issues. Douglass’s speech, delivered in 1852, condemns the institution of slavery and maintains that slaves are men and are therefore entitled to freedom. Johnson’s speech, on the other hand, was written in 1965 and discussed the civil rights movement. In it, he implored local governments to allow all American citizens, regardless of race, to vote. Despite the significant gap in time between these two addresses, both speakers use similar persuasive techniques, including ethos, pathos, and parallelism, to convince their audience that change needs to be implemented in America.

What is one of the things that most people are accustomed to? Something that has been a part of their daily life. There are many things but what I am referring to is school. School has been around for hundreds of years. Whether it was to learn about religion or the mandatory classes we take now in the 21st century, many of us have been advised to go to school. It has changed a lot over the years and the system is still trying to improve how they could better educate their students in the future. Now, after going through many levels of school, people question themselves: why did I learn all of this? Being an athletes is one of the best-paid jobs on Earth. Being that they are paid so much the cost for the consumer is very high. The prices of tickets and sports memorabilia have been steadily rising over the years. The average ticket prices for the NHL, MLB, NBA and NFL all rose 5% to 10% this year, according to Jon Greenberg, executive editor of Team Marketing Report. (Mihoces).

Over 7,500 animals are killed in zoos because they are deemed surplus, as stated by Liz Tyson an animals rights activist. This giraffe in particular sparked a huge controversy. HIs name was Marius, he was homed at the Copenhagen Zoo and was 2 years old when the staff killed him with a bolt gun. Marius was then dissected and fed to lions in front of ongoing zoo goers. What got people fuming is that he was a healthy, young giraffe. Therefore I believe the killing of Marius should not be justified.

The cost of college tuition is continually on the rise and has placed many burdens on high school students as well as their families. Some of the burdens that are placed are a result of parents putting pressure on their children to earn scholarships. Some of the burden is a result of students putting pressure on themselves to earn scholarships. Then, there is the burden of high college debt once the student graduates. Is this pressure really helping our students or is it hurting them? The bottom line is college tuition is skyrocketing out of control and something must be done before it destroys our families and our children.

The underclass handouts are all identical except for a graduation year headline at the top. If you have been given a stack with the wrong year, the material is exactly the same, so the students will get the same information.

Middle school. Clusters of kids standing in the middle of the hallway acting like blocked off signs you would see during construction on the highway. Random conversations fill the air, as you acquire tiny fragments of a different person’s conversation each time you pass by. It seems scary, but it's quite the adventure. Middle school and High school can be really hard for kids, and for some it comes really easy for. Some kids don’t know who they are yet, and are trying to discover who they’re meant to be. That’s why one word of advice I would give to any Middle-schooler or High-schooler would to be to “Find your purpose, and stay with it.”

You have decited on making a new school district in Jefferson County. I am writing to you so I can hopefully give you same ideas and persuade you to making a good school. I have Ideas and reasons on a the school’s name, mascot, and colors.

The fear of finals, the stress of studying, the frenzy to fit in. All of these feelings boil up to one thing: Middle School. Although at times it may seem that one small incident might be the end of the world, by taking certain precautions and following basic social rules, it will seem as though you danced through your middle school years. In the midst of the rigorous academics of St. Michael’s, the perplexity of social events, and the excitement of entering the hallowed halls of high school, you can easily navigate your eighth grade journey by listening to the advice of an eighth grader who has been through it all.

Here are some things that I wish someone has taken the time to tell me at the beginning of my freshman year. Where to Live: You have to spend a year or two living in a HUD dorm. (aka Evans, Lewis, and Wilson) And although not technically a HUD dorm, Ferrin is also a wonderful choice for a freshman. Although these buildings may not be as flashy and offer you quite as many amenities as the newer dorms do, the camaraderie that you find there will be infinitely valuable to you during your four years. The newer dorms, Chase, Fulton, Nyland and Tavilla are wonderful for upper classmen who really need to focus on their studies. Their suite and apartment styles are really wonderful for later on when you have cemented friendships, but are not optimal

Why spend money that is really needed for other things? Why live uncomfortably? Why be trapped in this hole called a home that belongs to another person? Why not live free and peacefully? When a person rents he or she usually throws away money that could be used to purchase something that belongs to them. Money is not easy to come by so why pay out hundreds toward something that is not benefit to the person paying it out. There is no good explanation for making a decision like this. The best option in a situation like this is to buy a house. Buying a house is a better option than renting an apartment.

“Your assignment is to write a persuasive essay and present it to the class in a week. You will be graded based on how convincing it is. Today we will be choosing topics,” announced Mr. Bowerbank, my 7th grade English teacher and ruler of classroom 110. My class simultaneously groaned at the prospect of work. I simply lifted my head with intrigue as it was already May and about time we had our first essay. He then proceeded to give examples of topics we could choose and gave us some time to think before we had to tell him our topic. My classmates were already rushing to tell the teacher their idea lest someone else steal it. That meant the usual abortion, death penalty, or drug use topics were out. I really couldn't think of anything and the teacher was slowly making his way through the remaining students like an executioner beheading criminals in a line. I have always thought that he would make a marvelous supervillain if he had a curly mustache, a tophat, and a cape. Eventually my name was called. I slowly dragged myself over to his desk. Even sitting down, he still seemed to tower over me. “What is your topic Cindy?” As usual in such desperate times, my mind turned to food. “Waffles are better than pancakes.” I figured that a waffle was just a differently shaped pancake with a nicer texture. “Hmm. Excellent topic. I look forward to your essay!” I survived to live yet another day.

Everyday we are eating food with artificial flavors and colors that are just chemicals that make people want to eat them more. So many of the kids of today are being encouraged that artificial flavors are good to eat . We are teaching our kids to eat unhealthy rather than healthy.

As I sat there and thought to myself what did everyone thing of me after hearing what I have done. “Taylor Bloom responsible for the deaths of 53 high school students. My head started to wander back to my high school days. In my sophomore year, I was bullied nearly every sing day by the stupid jocks. I started to hate myself so I decided to change my look. The next day I straightened my hair, put a black skirt on, and a white button up shirt with some heels, I left a few of the buttons on my shirt unbuttoned. I was making my way up to the school, I saw all eyes on me even the jocks could not take their eyes off of me. WAS I BECOMING POPULAR? Two weeks later I was the most popular girl in South Lake High. I had a tall, handsome boyfriend and my two new best friends Karli and Rebecca. Everyone wanted to be like me, everyone loved me or as I should say “worshipped me”. Until one night at a party I got super intoxicated and ended up doing things I probably shouldn’t have. That next day everyone was talking about it and all eyes were on me not that I am complaining, but it was not a good look they were giving me… they all knew what I had done that previous night. I did not show up for school the rest of the semester in fear I would lose my reputation so I started getting homeschooled.

On way too many occasions’ people are prejudging others solely on their appearance. The truth is that they nearly always are. I for one can relate because I have tattoos, piercings, and I’m always changing my hair color. The way one looks, whether it is tattoos, piercings, or ones hair style, may cause others to pass judgments. Although there are different reasons for the change in one’s appearance, there are always consequences that follow, some more severe than others. As human beings, we tend to make decisions and rash judgments based on very limited information which is controlled by our personal belief system and upbringing.
