Animal testing should not be used in cosmetic industries as a source of experimentation because it is unethical and inefficient. It is a cruel way of trying to find results that are not even always trustworthy. Everyone has a different reaction to different chemicals so why even bother animals for testing? Also different species can respond differently when exposed to the same chemical so animal testing can be inefficient. The results from animal tests can be quite variable and difficult to interpret therefore it may not be applicable to human beings. Thus, consumer safety still cannot be guaranteed even after these gruesome tests which are totally unethical. It is also unethical to torture and end the lives of these animals each year for our own luxury. Everyday cosmetic industries are using defenseless animals very cruelly just to carry out some most often useless tests. Instead they should use other alternatives which has been proved to yield better and accurate results than tests involving animals.

There are so many reasons to stop animal testing. These are examples are done to animals in laboratories but if they are done outside of these test labs, they would be considered a crime and animal abuse. Testing drugs on an animal is not only wrong, but also inaccurate. There are drugs tested on animals and thought to yield positive results, however “92% of experimental drugs deemed to be effective fail in a human trial.” Such mistakes have led to dangerous drugs being sold off the shelf. The inconsistency of effective drugs isn't helped by the undesirable living situations of some of the testing subjects. Also, it has been proven that only 50% of the time animal testing also works on humans, so while we tested on animals and it worked for animals, you might as well flip a coin as to whether it will benefit people.

Many animals live in a locked cage for hours, frightened to death for not knowing what kind of pain they will have to endure next. All they can do is wait in their cramped cages, hoping the experiment won’t be as bad as some of the other animals they see being killed in front of their very eyes. Each year, 100 million animals die from testing in laboratories, biology lessons, and experimentation in the United States alone. Animal testing started in first century Greece where a doctor named Galen studied animals. Subsequently, a scientist 400 years ago named William Harvey used animals to understand the human body. However, modern day animal testing did not start until 150 years ago when physiology became a popular science. Animal testing is inhumane, cruel, and grotesque. It is a major problem and controversial issue in the United States. Foremost, it should be put to an end because it is wrong, has multiple better alternatives, and it should not be considered a valid testing method.

Even primates, who have very similar genetic make-up to humans, fell short in making drugs completely safe for people. Unfortunately, animals being put through testing face conditions that are extremely unhealthy. Animals are kept in unsanitary areas with little to no space at all. According to the organization Humane Society International, “animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, forced inhalation, food and water deprivation…” (“Animal Testing - ProCon.org”). With no rights at all animals are being forced into harsh medical testings for diseases that can kill or severely injure the animal, such as polio. Through undercover investigation animals located in these labs are living “stressful, monotonous, and unnatural lives of daily confinement and deprivation” (“Animal Testing - ProCon.org”). Not only are these conditions being displayed in large laboratories, but also universities such as University of Oklahoma. During these experiments animals are being“fed chemicals, infected with diseases they would not naturally get, and are treated with no painkillers” (Animal Testing - ProCon.org”). As a result, medical testing facilities should be unable to be this inhumane to animals. Even though these tests may combat a widespread disease, animals should not have to endure this type of treatment at their own will.

But you do not notice the absence of a little symbol on the back: a small rabbit or ‘V.’ This means that before the eyeliner came into your hands, innocent animals were put through tests like acute oral and dermal toxicity tests where they experienced diarrhea, convulsions, bleeding from the mouth, seizures, paralysis, and eventually death (New England) to ensure the safety of this product. Cosmetics are just one of the areas in which animal testing occurs. Throughout history, animal experimentation has benefited humanity through new discoveries. However, many people tend to either ignore or forget the large number of animal subjects that have suffered serious harm during the process of experimentation. Over 115 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned, abused, and killed in laboratory experiments each year around the world (“Animal”). There is no valid reason why any living thing should be subjected to cruel punishment and unwanted torture just to serve another being’s needs. Therefore, no animal should be used in research or in testing the safety of products.
