According to (SOURCE) trait theory of leadership, the leader’s are deemed to behave in a variety of ways because they have intrinsic attributes. Curiosity, self-control, empathy, ambition and self-confidence are the main features needed in leadership. (SOURCE) argued that leadership cannot be learnt since individuals are born as leaders. Therefore, whilst appointing individuals to leadership positions certain traits need to be considered. As a result, procedures of selection are deemed more important than developing people (Hogan et al 1994)
When the leader 's behaviour differentiates them from their supporters, it is referred to as behavioural theories of leadership, (SOURCE). According to (SOURCE) behavioural theory states that leaders are made and not born.
Situational leadership theories state that a leader emerges to fit the situation, (SOURCE). Different people will take the lead in various circumstances that will subsequently require different skills. (SOURCE) argues that the ever changing elements present within the healthcare settings would benefit from leaders such as managers encouraging subordinate leaders to develop diverse leadership styles to deal with different conditions.
