Biomed Academy at my high school will be the most contributing factor to attain my goal. This academy has changed my perspective about medicine career. I have gained tons of knowledge from BioMed academy in these high school years. This will help me to attain my goal, because the knowledge gained from this academy will help me to be a successful medical professional. Mark Edmondson’s article “Who Are You and What Are You Doing Here?” really inspired me. This article brought out a concept that most people ignore, the fact that schools must teach the required curriculum lessons, rather than teaching what the students want to learn, and what the teachers want to teach. The problem that students are more interesting in earning enough credits to receive their degree, more than they are about learning about a particular subject. How students would rather get a job with a high pay, than doing something they love. To say the less, he brings out the problems in society and how structured it is. Mark Edmondson’s article tells you to step outside the box and be more self-reliant, I couldn’t agree more.

It was 2011 when the revolution burst out. I was studying for my pharmacology exam when I saw on TV that people were getting injured and shot. There were a lot of field hospitals and volunteering doctors that I knew. I wanted to go there and assist the injured, but I knew that my lack of medical training would not allow me to do that. Since then I have been thinking of the best medical field to help and be useful in the future.

As I mentioned in my personal statement, I am in pursuit of a quality education and here, I share a few reasons why I believe the Yale School of Medicine will provide me with what I seek. Firstly, I am interested in the Yale School of Medicine because I will be groomed for success in my long-term goals at this institution. I believe this because the school’s mission involves educating and inspiring medical scholars as well as future leaders. As an aspiring physician, I do not plan to use the knowledge I will gain in medical school solely in my practice of medicine. I intend to also use that knowledge to pilot positive changes in the practice of obstetric medicine in Nigeria. Consequently, I know that attending this institution will not only teach me to be a scholar in the field of medicine but also a leader.

My aspiration to become a sports medicine doctor was influenced by my mother. She was number one in her class, and incessantly tells me, “Nneoma if it wasn’t because my parents didn’t have money I would be a doctor right now”. Five others quite below her in her class continued on to become doctors, but she could not achieve the same feat. This has impacted me because as a person in my position who has the resources and ability I am compelled to achieve success to show gratitude for her.

Growing up in a small town as a kid you always have big dreams that seem impossible. There is really no one around to encourage you. Everyone always has something negative to say. Since they didn't make out they make you believe you can`t. Until this one thing comes around that motivates you and you feel like you can be whatever you want to be.Malcolm X found his motivation locked up in a jail cell, he had hope, and he never gave up.

Inspiration can come in many forms. It can be defined by various characteristics that cause us to think about what we as a person would do under the same circumstances and hope that we as a person can live up to that. Inspiration is the moral courage to stand up against all odds and prove that humanity, justice, honesty, and compassion prevail. Atticus Finch, a single father and lawyer of integrity did just that. He is a true brilliance of what moral courage is. Searching for the meaning of encouragement, I found a quote by Eric A. Burns, Gossamer Commons, 08-12-05 that concludes, “Inspiration is never genuine if it is known as inspiration at the time. True inspiration always steals on a person; its importance not being fully recognized for some time.”

When I was in middle school I decided that I wanted to be a pathologist. I was fascinated with the human body and would always watch shows on TLC that pertained to the human body such as the operation. I loved to read murder mystery books and any type of books that had a pathologist or city coroner in them. As I got into high school I started to research college criminal justice programs that had a body farm. The more research I did, I realized that majoring in criminal justice would be the easy part.

I graduated from high school knowing I wanted to work with adolescents. I just did not know in what aspect. I knew I wanted to work with children who are growing up in urban areas, and struggling to stay out of trouble. So, in college I major in sociology but I was still unsure how I could use the degree to work with adolescents who struggle with behavior issues. The courses helped me realize it’s not just children who grow up in urban areas that struggle with peer pressure, drugs in their community, living with single parent, verbally aggression, physical aggression, etc. It was then when I started to focus more on the mental health to help all adolescents who struggle with behavioral and aggressive behaviors.
