We all know service is such a broad term. I used to describe my passions as such, but as I have grown, I discovered I am most passionate about service that aims to make others feel valuable. While giving is honorable, teaching and empowering is transformative. My experiences a Younglife leader were integral to revealing this to me. My job was not to give these kids things but to spend time with them, encourage them, speak into their lives, and show them how loved and cared for they were. I aimed to carry this theme through in my role as Body Image Coordinator. I felt I had the responsibility not just to tell my sorority sisters that they were beautiful, but to empower and instill an ability to recognize beauty for themselves. Further, I aim
Reflecting back on my experiences I feel that I finally have an answer to my original question of what is service. Service is a selfless act, but in a greater sense it is self fulfilling. We all approach service with the sense that we are actually helping those in need, but through our actions we help ourselves by feeling the joy to those we bring around
Service is simply an act of helpful activity and the transferable skills that are gained from service illustrate the importance of being involved. By volunteering in my community and taking part in organizations that are centered on service, I am able to strengthen my understanding of my surroundings, and I am taught more compassion for others. Being involved presents unlimited opportunities to give back to others, and with the skills instilled by service, I am able to make a difference in the lives around me. Experience gained with service creates characteristics in a person that can shape the direction of my life, and I will value that in the future.
Service is just as important as the four other qualities and should not be thought of as less. It is something that builds up a good reputation and character which is what I have done in the past few years of my life. I’ve volunteered at the food bank, a homeless shelter, and every year, I do something for the little kids who are in the hospital for a while. Helping others who need support makes me happy that they are receiving the aid they need. I also get involved in school either doing something for the school or helping others in and out of school. To help others is a responsibility that everyone should take and not just those who
Often, we never see the effects of our actions. Sometimes, we find ourselves comfortably distancing acts of service from why they are committed and whom they impact. I never genuinely understood what lies at the root of service until my freshman year of high school.
Service brings me great joy, and I continually seek ways that I can help those around me. The day after school gets out, my youth group and I are leaving for Mexico City to serve with an organization, Niños de Mexico, that provides a safe house for orphans and children from broken homes. I also recently committed to volunteering my time each Sunday with the kids at my church. My efforts to serve extend through my daily life as well, for example, when sister has had a rough day, I make her tea or brownies. I take care of my neighbor’s kids for free when they’re having a busy week. None of these tasks feel like work to me, I love to help people as much as possible. I look forward to the new service opportunities National Honor Society will provide.
One deciding to serve their surrounding community in an attempt to better the lives of people living in that community is one of the most selfless actions one individual person can perform. Throughout my time in high school career I committed myself to serving the broader community in order to better society whether it be me serving as Co-President of Life is Delicious or raising money for Special Olympics Connecticut by doing the Penguin Plunge.
Being introduced to methods of serving others, makes life richer. Service gives me an indescribable feeling that must be experienced to be known. Serving is not a burden to me; it is beneficial to others, as well as me. Service as a Beta is always a rewarding time. I served my school as Beta Club Secretary.
Service in the school and community is an insight to your character and work ethic. I have over 20 hours of community service from many different experiences. Last summer I worked for Camp Barakel, a summer camp, in the kitchen. I assisted in serving food and cleaning. I learned discipline and teamwork through this valuable experience. Not only this I’ve worked with the Elderly in Rehabilitation centers and the patience and nurturing qualities is something that will forever be valuable in my life. Last but not least working as Big Sister or Buddy to a 4th grade girl has given me the chance to positively impact and influence her life as simply as having a friend is immense. All of these service opportunities as added to my character and prepared me for the responsibilities of
In the course of my hard work I served by tutoring and staying afterschool to help students excel in their understanding of the four major subjects Math, Language Arts, Science, and even Social Studies. Another service is in my church, when I help the priest during the liturgy. Waking up on Sunday around 7: 30 A.M helping the priest is a task I enjoy accomplishing. Helping my dad around his bakery and making extra community service hours is another service. Around the bakery, I help clean and retrieve items for bakers in need.
Serving not only benefits the recipient, but also the volunteer. One area I feel passionate about is blood donation. It makes me feel satisfied to know that my blood can go to save a stranger's life. Another place I serve in is in my church. I have helped with Vacation Bible School, a mission trip, and cleaning up after events. These projects took a lot of time out of my already busy schedule, but when I look back and see all those who have benefited from my service, I have no regrets.
My definition of service is a beneficial act performed for someone in need. Examples of service include volunteer work and doing small things for other people when the opportunity arises. It is important for a person to help their community once in a while, because a lot of people are very entitled. I find this present in the majority of people in our society, in my peers and those older than me. I am not exempt from this sense of entitlement, which most likely comes from that fact that we all live comfortably in the middle class of a first world country, which most people would consider not to be in a major war at the moment. It is crucial for people to do things that they don’t really want to for the benefit of others once in a while. For my NJHS service hours, I will be volunteering with SNAP (students need an after party). I helped with the color run, and will be helping make decorations for the SNAP annual after party, which takes place after prom. My family also plans to participate in the USPS (United States Postal Service)’s Operation Santa, which where people adopt letters from needy kids, and then send them a
First of all, there are the services I do currently. As a member of my high school’s branch of the National Honors Society, I volunteer and assist in creating not only a better school, but a better community as well. For example, though I was participating in this event eight years prior to my induction, I assist in the Crop Walk on behalf of the National Honors Society. This charity, which culminates with a several mile walk throughout the town, is meant to raise money in order to assist in the funding of initiatives to eliminate malnutrition and hunger throughout the world, including local endeavors like food banks. By participating in this organization, I am able to aid in the goal to terminate this problem. In addition, I am also a part (and currently president of) my local high school’s Student
My effort to serve my community have been an immensely important area that I always try to expand on. From my hundred and seventy service hours, I have learned that giving back even in small amounts positively affects the lives of the people involved. My favorite memories of serving my local area is during the special NJROTC ceremonies when I am able to see the wonderful faces of veterans and military families when we present the colors or the veteran with a flag. Through school, I have been able to see the faces of incoming freshmen in my workroom mature into the present sophomores and the students today. In my church, I am apart of the Ushering team which assists with the service every few weeks. Through this, I am able to see the bright
Volunteering and participating in service projects are two of the most rewarding activities in my opinion. Some people may find it was a hassle or only do it because they have to meet the minimum requirement for school or work. Helping others, for me, has always been somewhat second nature to me. Over many years of volunteering I believe I have developed qualities that will stick with me for life and benefit me in my career. As early as freshman year, in high school, I found myself looking for ways to give back. I started by looking for opportunities within school, where I came across the A+ tutoring program, and so my journey of giving back began. While tutoring, my patience for others really evolved, partly by choice and partly because
Acts of service always created a desire in me to help make people’s lives better. People often put forth their best when
