As a child, I was always told that I could become whatever I wanted to be. I dreamt of becoming an astronaut, orbiting around Earth or an airplane pilot, flying to different parts of the world. There were may choices I had in mind but they all seem to have a risk factor to them. I wanted to do something that involved little chances of risk and also be able to live comfortably. That is when I decided to become an orthodontist. The field of orthodontics has many challenges, but it is the occupation I want to pursue as a career.
I chose to become a dentist when I was a junior in high school. At the time, I came across a Twitter account where a student from England was documenting his journey in dental school. I was fascinated by how hands on dental school was through his pictures. I saw that the road to becoming a dentist was hard, but I felt like I could take on that challenge. During my senior year in high school, I decided to further my studies in the orthodontist field. After doing a career research essay in twelfth grade on becoming an orthodontist, I became serious about pursuing a career in orthodontics. My mother played a huge role with my decision of becoming an orthodontist. She has always inspired me to achieve great things in life. My mom motivates me to study hard and give one hundred percent in everything I do so I would be able to obtain a well paying job and live comfortably providing for my future wife, kids, and family. Another role model I look up to for
When I was in elementary school, my mother had begun her career in the dental field as a dental hygienist. She told me she loves what she does and was able influence me that oral hygiene was extremely important, as if I was one of her patients. However, I never really considered pursuing a career in the dental field until I spoke with my uncle
When I was a teenager trying to figure out what I wanted to do when I grew up, I was extremely fascinated by psychology. I wanted to know everything about why people act they way they do, what mental illness is, and how to help those afflicted. That all changed after my first year in college. I realized some people with mental illness can be violent, even dangerous, and I recognized that I had a fear of being harmed and rethought my choice of major. I spent a few years exploring different subjects, then decided to be a dental hygienist.
"If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door." -Milton Berle There is rarely an opportunity given to to you in life. Most of the time you create the opportunity for your self. I as a student of Youth Entrepreneur, I have realized nothing is given to you. When creating a business that you will own, you will be on your own, and will need to find help or research how to do it.
Another aspect that directed me into the dental career is my sister, Dr. Vi Pham. Initially, I was having trouble keeping the dental dream alive because of my falling grades in my first year of post-secondary (as it was quite a culture shock from high school). However, my sister (who was in dentistry school at the time) reminded me how it will be all worth it in the end when I finally got into dental school. She proved this point by showing my around her dental school – University of Alberta. What was included in my personal tour was the new simulation labs and the new patient centres that my sister worked in everyday. Also,
To start, I have always had an interest in the health field and knew it was where I saw my future. I came across dental hygiene and quickly became fascinated. I learned just how important it can be and how many tend to overlook it. Given the opportunity, I would like to make sure my patients understand the importance of dental hygiene and share my knowledge. I feel because I have been given an opportunity that others weren’t so fortunate to receive; it is my responsibility to give back. I come from a small community in Northern New Mexico in which I plan to return and offer my knowledge and skills. I also have plans of doing missionary work for those who are unable to afford dental care. To be accepted into the prestigious Division of Dental
Growing up the main question a child is asked is, “What do you want to be when you grow up? “ , and most kids respond saying a doctor, lawyer, or a cop. In reality not everyone sticks to their first idea, and it’s slim that they actual start working in the chosen career. In my case, I have always wanted to work as a social worker or a therapist, but I realized it wasn’t in my budget. Therefore, I have decided; as well as, grew interest in being a dental assistant for a pediatric office.
This experience remains engrained in my memory. Hesitantly stepping into the car for my trip to have multiple teeth extracted. Anxiously sitting in the waiting room at the age of 12 with sweat dripping down my forehead until the receptionist calls out “Manveer!”. She brings me to the dentist’s office where I see a team of 3, who altered my perception of the dentist forever. The dentist conversed with me for 20 minutes allowing me to regain my composure before even beginning the procedure. The strong interpersonal skills, honesty and compassion I witnessed during this procedure made me feel as if there was nothing to fear knowing I was in the hands of someone I could trust. Combining what I’ve learned from Dr. Peter and my desire to help people preserve their health from a background as a registered nurse, I am determined to
Ever wonder why your dentist doesn’t actually clean your teeth? It’s cause that’s the job of the dental hygienist. They are specialist at keeping your teeth and gums healthy and clean. My goal of becoming a dental hygienist will soon come to pass. All I need is dedication, motivation, ambition, and understanding. This latter element becomes very important when discussing this career field. The most basic elements that one must understand when considering becoming a dental hygienist are threefold; first, I must possess the education requirements that are necessary for admittance to this field. Second, I will discuss the nature of the work,
I used to wish to be a lawyer or registered nurse; but I figured both of those career paths did not fit me. My junior year of high school I became set on becoming a dental hygienist. I figured I would be able to do what I am interested in and not have to be in school for a long period of time. However, recently I had begun to question this choice. I had done more research on dental hygienists, and there are a lot more people attending school to become hygienists than dentists.
As senior year approaches fastly I have gotten the question multiple times asking me what I want to be when I am older. More times than not I have answered “I do not know”, But now that I think about it I want to be an orthodontist. In order to become an orthodontist it takes hour upon hours of dedication to your schooling. Becoming an orthodontist is a lot of hard work.
Since my previous application, I continued to work as a dental assistant until April 2014 when I left in order actively pursue the possibility of studying dentistry out of the country. During that time, I worked as a substitute teacher and was surprised to learn that children are not educated about oral health. My time here inspired me to become a pediatric dentists and I plan on being extensively involved with the school board. Shortly after being accepted into a dental school in Poland, Dr. Myles Spodak contacted me. He asked if I would consider coming back to work with him as his assistant. I elatedly agreed, but informed him that I would be leaving for Poland in August. Through his support and encouragement, I found the tenacity to apply
How old were you when you decided what you wanted to be when grew up and what helped you make that decision? Well for me, it was easy. When I was in the seventh grade my brother was put into the hospital three different times for Pneumonia which is an infection that inflames the air sacs and can cause the lungs to fill with fluid. This can be extremely dangerous especially if it occurs repetitively in a five year old, which was how old my brother was at the time. We spent a total of eighteen days in the hospital as my brother was receiving treatment and recovering. It was then that I decided I wanted to become a registered nurse and work in the medical field.
When I was a child I wanted to be a veterinarian, I had such a passion for “helping” my furry little friends with the plastic toys my mom got me for Christmas. I was so dead set I never wanted to explore any other career field, well that lasted up until about middle school when I witnessed my first dog pass away. It was all downhill from there. So, after, I lived my life going with the flow and not thinking about much else except for friends, sports and school. Then the time came for me to choose what I really wanted to do junior/senior of high school when college applications were due and my parents really wanted me to pick a major before I started college. I knew I wanted to follow in my parents footsteps and do something in the medical field,
A career in Dentistry is my main goal in life. I want to pursue a career in Dentistry for many reasons. Being a Dentist, you get to aid people and make them feel better about themselves. I have the personal qualities to be a Dentist and know that I would be great at the job. I would look forward to going to work every day. Dentistry contains many tools and oral practices that I am not familiar with. It would be awesome to get to be familiar with the lifestyle of a Dentist. Someday, I might even be able to live their lifestyle. Focusing in school is the main priority for all jobs. Dentistry also involves a diverse (longer) college route than most. This means that the academic requirements to be a Dentist are quite time consuming, but the
This reflection acts as my fourth reflection since I have started my internship at Comfort Dental under the Guidance of Dr. Trino Nuno. The semester is coming to an end, and I have enjoyed my time at Comfort Dental., I previously had a clinical and administrative internship at Smile Works Dentistry in Rockwall, Texas and I can now tell you that my experience at these two dental practices was incredibly different. At Smile Works, I quickly got used to the way the practice was run because it was not that complicated and I only had one doctor’s schedule to manage. However, at Comfort Dental I still struggle with managing day-to-day functions. The reason I struggle is that Comfort Dental has three doctors and a lot more staff. Also, the computer system that I mastered at Smile Works is not the same computer system that they use at Comfort Dental. I got the chance to use all to same skills in this internship. I answered phones, checked that patient’s insurance plans are eligible to be billed and scanned paper documents into a hard drive.
