Personal Narrative: Why I Volunteer In The Military

How long did you serve?
I have been serving in the Army for 18 years. I did four years in the Marines. I am currently working in Fort Drum as a Sergeant Major. My job is Infantry.

Why did you join?
I joined the military because I wanted to do my part for our great country. I grew up in the military, and it was something that always impressed me.
We (my family) are very proud of our country, so serving is something that is very important to us. I did not think twice about signing on the dotted line. The military did its part by taking care of my family growing up as a young child; I felt I had to give back.

When I joined, I was looking for guidance and understanding of where I wanted to go. I was young, and the military guided me and made me the man I am today.

What was difficult about it?
The time away from your family is very difficult. Military life is very hard sometimes it requires long hours, and you could find yourself in dangerous places around the world.

What did you like about your experiences? I love leading Soldiers and seeing them progress as leaders. These great Americans make me very proud every day. It keeps the country, history, and military service intact. It brings the nation together, for example, look at September 11th. Patriotism helped the nation heal from a devastating attack on our ways and values. The United States of America is the greatest country in the world. Yes, we have faults, but coming together as a nation helps us get through those issues. So yes, I agree that patriotism is critical, and without it where would we stand as a nation?
