Personal Narrative: When I Finish Nursing School

My ambition is to graduate St. Francis College as a Registered Nurse with a Bachelor’s degree in the upcoming years. Although majoring in nursing will not be easy, I feel I am prepared for the challenge. At this time in my life I cannot see myself majoring in anything else. As a young girl, with a mother working in the medical field, I was always fascinated going to work with her. Working in a doctor’s office these past two and a half years myself has given me much experience with patients and has made it more to clear to me that this is what I want to pursue as a career. I wish to be a nurse because I seem to get a feeling of warmth and internal satisfaction when helping those in need. I have begun to learn that medicine is not the only cure for people’s ailments. It is the care they receive by those around them whether it is in a hospital, nursing home, or even their own home. This is where I believe that I can make a great difference in people 's lives by helping them recover.

After graduation, my immediate nursing goal and plan is to find employment as a registered nurse on a pediatrics unit at a local hospital. Although I am striving for a position in the pediatric intensive care unit, I will be grateful for any job on any pediatric nursing unit. In this position, I will gain a more concrete foundation on the multifaceted needs of both the pediatric patient and their families. Whatever the reason that brought you here, I want to congratulate you for taking the first step into exploring what I consider to be one of the most challenging, inspiring and rewarding careers. Nursing school was certainly no walk in the park and took a lot of sacrifice, but it's definitely worth it.

Growing up I did not dream about becoming a nurse. I graduated from high school with honors and was planning to go to law school. However, several months later, my life drastically changed. Unexpectedly, my beloved mother was diagnosed with stage II ovarian cancer. Spending countless days and nights by her side at the hospital made me recognize how significant and life-saving her care was. Nurses were highly skilled professionals who worked together to provide essential care for my mother, give immense support and encouragement, ensure that her treatment would be delivered timely, promptly assess and address her physical and emotional needs and manage her distressing symptoms.

For my Project Life presentation, I chose to do mine on a registered nurse. The reason I chose to do mine on a registered nurse is because I love to help people. When I help people, it gives me a great feeling. A registered nurse is a nurse who has graduated from a college's nursing program or from a school of nursing and has passed a national licensing exam. In order to be a registered nurse you must have either your associates or bachelors degree. You can get a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), if you want to advance in the profession. You can also get a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), it may lead to advances such as: Clinical Nurse Specialist, Anesthetist Nurse, Mid-wife Nurse, or a Nurse Practitioner.

Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, once said, “I attribute my success to this:—I never gave or took an excuse.” That is an outlook on life I try to live up to. I have had a few set backs in my college career to keep me from achieving my goal of becoming a Registered Nurse. I could have easily given up on my dream but I took those hardships and turned them into fuel to keep going. My father suffered a massive heart attack and went into cardiac arrest when I first started college. It completely flipped by life upside down. I spent weeks at a time in the hospital with him. Seeing him go in and out the hospital for years reaffirmed my need to become a nurse and help others like how those nurses took care of my father. Once I

Helping people, or connecting to people even in their most vulnerable state has always been enjoyable for me. I have always been an empathetic person, putting others needs before my own. Because of this, I plan on furthering my education by attending a four-year college and pursue a major in nursing. This will help me better my skills in the long term and enable me to do something that I will enjoy. Although, one can’t deny how hard it is to obtain a degree in nursing but I believe that in life, the sky’s the limit and no matter how difficult our aspirations are, we should truly aim for them.

When I first knew that I wanted to become a nurse, I was watching a show called Grey’s Anatomy with my grandmother and I was like that would be fun and adventurous to work in a hospital and to make a difference in people’s lives each and every day that you step foot in the door. And to make sure people get the care that they need. I would truly like to be one of those nurses that also helps others that can’t afford to go to a hospital. Do you know how many people die because they don’t have enough money or have the proper care that they need to help them. You could only imagine.

Caring for others has always been a passion of mine, and becoming a nurse has always been my dream. While my dream has turned reality, I can say that nursing has blessed me with the opportunity to not only be a servant to those in my community, but it has also allowed me to be of some comfort to patients and their loved ones during their darkest and most vulnerable moments. Nursing offers a variety of opportunities, where the only restrictions are the ones we set for ourselves. As for myself, all things are possible, for if I want it, I strongly believe it’s already mine. The depths that I will go to reach the latitude of success that I so desire is boundless.
