Slinking through the plus size section, laboring to sit stagnantly to curtail the groans of chairs, evading the scale in the bathroom – these encompassed fragments of my childhood. Tipping the scale at 135 pounds, the 97th weight percentile, as a fifth grader was not the ideal circumstance. Primarily, despite preliminary excuses to circumvent reducing my weight, at the onset of middle school I affirmed that I would undertake the initiative. Leaflets for volleyball tryouts adorned the school walls – an augury from the world proclaiming: “This is your opportunity!” Hesitance and distress inundated my deliberations because I considered myself the epitome of un-athletic. Every minute of the tryouts, I would invest 110% - diving for an ostensibly abandoned ball, assailing for a spike, employing every single maneuver in my arsenal to make myself stand out. As the practice culminated, the adrenaline surpassed and joy pasted a beaming grin on my face: my volleyball skill levels matched those of the girls! Suddenly, the coach bellowed, “Alright girls, let’s run a mile!” When the coach blew his whistle, the other girls effortlessly flew by me. By the conclusion of my fourth lap, the coach heeded no awareness of me - the ultimate person to pass the finish line. Back compressed against the wall, heaving and sore, I bemoaned even considering myself competent for tryouts and for embarrassing myself. The subsequent Friday, the coach dispatched a list of the girls who qualified for the team. Nevertheless, I seized onto the delicacies of hope, rationalizing that being an abysmal jogger should not nullify my progressing volleyball-oriented skills. Yet, the team roster excluded the name “Beneshia Mathew.” The failure to make a team was not only an impediment for me, the scholar who yearned to be active in sports; moreover, it was a defeat for me, an adolescent girl who coveted overcoming her obesity.
