The Land of Opportunities “They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapist. ...I'm not just saying Mexicans, I’m talking about people that are from all over [the world] that are killers and rapists and their coming into this country.” These are the disgusting insults that presidential candidate Donald Trump, who plans to build a massive wall around the United States, has recently scratched up to give his new modern definition of what it means to be an illegal immigrant. But despite these allegations, being an illegal immigrant has meant the same thing since the beginning of the history of the United States. When asked about a plan for amnesty, former presidential candidate Ben Carson recalls his meeting with a farmer who owns a large 8 thousand acre farm and how the man “could not hire not one American to work on his farm. Not even at $11.00 an hour.” Carson further clarifies the meaning of his encounter by stating that, “[America] needs illegal aliens to do the jobs Americans won’t do.” This is true, for illegal immigrants will take any open job if it means its going to feed them and/or their families. As a consequence, unauthorized immigrants mostly work in construction, agriculture, and hospitality services which pay less and are more physically demanding than secondary education jobs (Bump). But illegal immigrants are not just stopping there. In recent years, the chances of an undocumented immigrant getting a white collar job have increased from 10 to 13% from 2007 to 2012 (Bump). This means that more illegal immigrants are challenging themselves to compete for better jobs by widening their skill sets in order increase their chances of living a more prosperous
