Though I spent my entire life living in North Carolina I never thought of myself as a Southerner. My understanding of the Southern lifestyle was quite limited; there is an emphasis on family solidarity, and self-sufficiency with an agricultural backdrop that is part of their essence. The South is not simply a location, manners or customs it is a way of life. Hearing the childhood details of a favorite professor allowed me to envision a picture perfect life under the shade of a magnolia tree and little southern girl who grew up to be a Sandhills Community College professor, Mrs. Cole. While Mrs. Cole has been on many adventures around the world, her childhood adventure never went past the borders of her hometown. Mrs. Cole’s life began in a farming community in North Anson County. She lived about three and a half miles from the eighty-seven student school and all of her needs were met with in the borders of her town. Mrs. Cole mentioned that luxury was not part of the daily life of her small farm community; only two students drove cars to her high school but that was due to necessity, since they had jobs at a mill after school. Remembering very little traffic, she reminisced that the town had one stoplight during her early …show more content…
Farm animals need daily care and leaving them was never an option. Mrs. Cole learned about adoration and responsibility from her mother who loved all the animals on our farm. Mrs. Cole describes how “when she passed the barn, she always spoke to the milk cow, and the cow spoke back, a simple moo, but it was always there.” Mrs. Cole and her sister would dress in their Mama's clothes and go down the hill, past the barn, and speak to the cow. Never once did that cow speak to them the way they did to their mom. The cows realized two little girls dressed up in our mother's clothes were imposters and their relationship was based on genuine affection for
Living in the South as a youngster was an experience of which I reflect on today as a period of silence for me. There was still a great deal of racial tension in the air, I was told not to talk to white people as they were the enemy and would most likely hang me, and the schools were still segregated so there was no interaction with people other than those who looked like myself. At that time, I was not thinking about the future, but was more focused on the dos and don't s of the era. You were only to speak when spoken too, you didn't listen on adult conversations, you didn't discuss anything thing that went on within the household with anyone outside, and now there was the threat of desegregating the schools which became a major topic of discussion of which I was completely omitted.
Click, Clack, Moo Cows that Type” by Doreen Cronin talks about cows and chickens that negotiate to get electric blankets. Even though this is a book intended for children’s entertainment it is believed that there is a deeper meaning than what is superficially understood by the reader. In a reader’s perspective, the farmer represents the authority and the cows and chicken represent workers. Just like the animals, the workers do not have a voice. Thus, once the cows and chickens find the old typewriter in the farm they see it as a way of speaking and a way to gain the empowerment that they have been lacking for a while. This can be seen when the cows first leave a note to protest, when the cows decide to include the hens, and when the hens decide
The greasy scent of cheap burgers and fries wafted into the car as we pulled into the parking lot of a Wendy’s, right in the heart of who-knows-where, East Tennessee. I couldn’t contain my excitement as I rushed my 12-year-old self out of the minivan and into the palace of grease. Clad in ratty sweatpants and a t-shirt with my hair pressed down from my prolonged use of headphones, it was evident that I spent long hours sitting in a car, asking “if we’re there yet” too many times to count. In this moment, however, carving up Snowshoe Mountain on my snowboard didn’t seem as exciting as the machine that stood across the room. Standing tall, shiny, and red, the Coca-Cola Freestyle soda fountains were in the early stages of being released, and
Being from rural Mississippi, people from other states assume that we know very little about what goes on outside our state let alone our own town. In a way, I can see why, but glad I am one of the ones who, thanks to my family, have an idea of a world larger than my town. I am from a family of six consisting of my mother, father, step-mother, brother, and identical twin sister. We did a lot of traveling when growing up normally traveling out of state even if just for weekends. My interest in other cultures and languages came from my family, especially on my mother’s side where I members who traveled out of country for work and would bring us back clothes, books, or other souvenirs. My dad did not do as much traveling as my mom and had not
“Why are you qualified to be my Southern Region Vice President?”, asked an intrepid FBLA member as he gazed at my board, full of parallels of business to architecture, as my program at A-Tech was Architecture. Smiling, I came to the member and shook has hand, and spoke, “ Your eyes are as bright as the stars above, for each has the potential that is out of this world. Potential like that has to be nurtured and supported, and the fact of the matter is the system currently does not support that”. Within the vicinity, not just a couple feet away was my opponent for the position talking to his colleagues and sending them out to fetch voters. My eyes never left the member before me, but I could hear my opponent. Veiled smiles we traded from time to time, as we’d have to stay in the campaigning
The United States of America has four distinctive regions, the commercial Northeast, the rusty Midwest, the entertaining West, and most of all, the hospitable South. As a Southerner myself, I feel like the region is very unique compared to the other three regions, which they feel the same, while the South seems very special in a certain way. It might the the history behind the region, the music that comes from here, the religious subculture, the rather heavy ruralness in an rapidly advancing world, or maybe even the people here. As someone that has lived in the South all my life, I’m aware of the practices many Southerners do, the products the South creates, and the perspectives of the people here. This will focus on the inclusive features of the South, and how much that impact the region.
Entry: Since hiking has been going on Ky and I have been getting closer to each other. I noticed one day he was making curvy shapes with his fingers in the dirt on the hill. I asked what he has doing and he said he was writing like people used to. People do not write anymore because they do not know how. All they know is how to type. Ever since that day Ky has been teaching me how to write. One that day I noticed when he was writing, he showed me how to write the letter C. At first I was not very good but I have been getting better, just not as well as Ky. About a week later Xander and I go on our first date with an Official monitoring our behavior. I wish the Official wouldn’t of gone because it would’ve given a chance for Xander and I to
It became normal. I started to believe these names. If somebody called out, Tree, I would look around. In the barn scene, Kunta was getting ready to escape, and Fiddler was helping him after he was singing that lullaby. Kunta had asked Fiddler his name, his real name, and I have to admit, that moment was really emotional. Fiddler seemed to come to an understanding of how unbreaking Kunta was. I feel Kunta wasn’t built for a slave, his roots, his mindset, and his resilience wouldn’t allow it. This leads to him escaping, or trying to escape, many times. The first time he was bought by Samson, and the other times, he was caught by dogs. A very disappointing moment for me, because my nerves had built up while he was running, so when he was caught, I was extremely disappointed. It seemed to me, when he was escaping the second time, he was doing it not only for himself, but to Fiddler, and his family. Maybe even Jinna. At the end, where he was losing contact with his parents, was absolutely heartbreaking to me, because he is giving up. He was giving into his new identity, losing his
It has been too long since I’ve last talked to you, how are you all? I’ve missed the delicious food mother had cooked ho the Philippines. The weather in Hawaii can be unbearably hot especially in the fields that I work in. I am regretting the decision of coming to Hawaii to work in the sugar cane plantation. The people convinced me to sign the the contract, promised me wealth to bring back to the Philippines, and and great living conditions. They also said the work would be easy, and promised paradise.
It all started two weeks ago. I had just moved into a beautiful home. The owner of the home had sold it very cheap, I’d had wondered why, but didn’t care to ask .I was just glad I got such a great deal on such an amazing home. I was so excited that I bought a plaque with my name engraved on it. It reads “The Home of Matthew Jones,” it really wasn’t necessary but the amount of money that was left over after buying the house was incredible.
Georgia, a twenty year old female moved into a neighborhood that was quieter than silence itself. Getting to know people was her favorite pass time, but maybe it would be trickier to get to know her new neighbor. She would go over to his house, use the doorbell and wait for the sound to reach his ears, but it never did. She would drop off fruit baskets and small gifts, but everytime it would find its way home. He kept to himself most of the time, but once a month you would see him come out of his house and leave for hours at a time.
This past summer I got to go to the sunshine state, Florida USA! It was a long trip down there but it was totally worth it! When we got there, we stopped in Fort Walton Beach so we could stop at a hotel and rest for the night. Then the next day we were off to Tampa!
Growing up in my hometown of Charleston, Arkansas was quite the experience. I can remember many fond memories of my growing up here. For instance, the many summers where my Grandpa took me and my sister fishing at our pit. Or the many camping trips I've been on with my family. I can even recall being a little girl and helping feed calves on my Grandpa's Dairy Farm, McCartney
Have you ever went on a vacation, birthday, special event, or somewhere fun? Well I have! I had a blast at South Carolina.
I remember my trip to wet n' wild in North Carolina. It was about a years ago and it was on of the amazing trip of my life. I remember flying to North Carolina. I was sitting on the plane thing about all the delicious Krispy Kreme donuts I was going to eat, their donuts were first created in North Carolina. North Carolina also has many theme parks located on its famous strip, including Golf & Arcades, Wet n' Wild, Parks, Shows on ice , tours locations and more . And out of all these places, the most interesting place was wet n' wild.
