I am known to be extremely clumsy. With that, it’s expected that I often end up in awkward situations. In the past I have called numerous teachers “Mom,” fallen down while walking up stairs, almost fallen off a cliff; and it can be assured there were many more instances where my embarrassing clumsiness had led me into awkward, sometimes life threatening, situations. One moment that stands out in particular takes place in every marine animal welfare activists’ “favorite” place, Sea World.
This year, during Spring break my family and I ventured to California, the land of Starbucks and In-N-Out Burger. Our trip started out at Sea World, and my younger brother insisted we go to the Shark Encounter exhibit. Once we arrived my parents let my brother
One sunny day an eighteen year old girl was enjoying the view from the docks at Oxnard, CA when she slipped and fell into the ocean. Thankfully no one had noticed what happened and she slowly made her way to the beach underneath the docks. When Oceania finally made it to the shore she was so tired that she passed out from exhaustion. When she woke up an hour later Oceania started to get up only to discover that instead of legs she had a fishtail. As she was trying to get clear of the water, she was discovered by the owner of Seaworld. As soon as he spotted her, he quickly called his crew up and they caught and transported her to Seaworld. Once there they placed her in with the dolphins and told her what to do for a performance with the dolphins.
Sea or Xavier? That was the question that I was losing sleep over in eighth grade. At the time, it was the biggest decision of my life, the decision that would decide not only my home for the next four years, but the future. Thinking back, I wasn’t simply deciding between two schools. St. Joseph by the Sea High School was only a couple minutes from my house and all my friends were planning on attending. I knew that I would be happy at Sea as it was the comfortable option. Xavier, on the other hand, was very different. Xavier is in Manhattan, a whole new world for a young boy from Staten Island. I would be the only student from my elementary school attending and I knew that the curriculum would be much more rigorous. Xavier was in no way, the
At the end of the day Reef got into Franks truck and head off to the rehab center to say goodbye to Leeza. Leeza hadn’t been the first one Reef had to say goodbye to, Alex left the home to go be with his parents, Scar off to university with the scholar ship she received after graduating high school, Reef had been proud of Scar, she was smarter than the others and proved it,
During the Memorial Day Weekend, my family decided to go on a church trip to the Niagara Falls. I kind of wanted to go, but my mom insisted that I should stay home with my grandparents to practice piano for my upcoming competition. In the end, she left the decision to me.
Gloria Steinem once said, “Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities.” Imagination and dreams can make anything possible, including me becoming a marine biologist. Ever since I was five years old, i have dreamed of becoming a marine biologist. My dad, stepmom, and me took a trip to Orlando, Florida and I was terrified of what was to come. I didn't know it had the time, but now I realize that this one experience has shaped me into who I am and what I love.
I never could have thought in a million years something this petrifying could happen to me. My favorite place in the whole world, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, turned into one full of sorrow. As I dove to catch the fluorescent green tennis ball, hot white sand flew up onto my body. My dad, wearing his favorite floral swim trunks, responded with a typical, “Nice catch, Zako!” I began to lift myself off the beach floor and dust off the sand, when suddenly I noticed something peculiar floating in the elusive blue water. The object appeared to be a body. In a split second I realized what I was fixed upon. “Wait, it’s Grandpap!,” I shouted. The words fell out of my mouth in slow motion. That split second I first saw him felt like an eternity.
One Thursday while they were here my mom, the five girls, and my two younger brothers piled into our minivan and drove to a nearby boat dock to swim. The temperatures were soaring at a coma-inducing 95 degrees, and the sun was sweltering. I was miserable and sweaty. Once we got there the big girls took off our outer layer of clothes and took a picture to post on social media later. Then, as I got my towel out and ready for when I
It was around christmas time and my dad had decide he wanted to take a vacation, so we decided on florida and he wanted to got to Miami and I wanted to go to Sarasota. We invited my sister her boyfriend and they brought my nephew along. We all piled into my sister's car which was on a Nissan maxima so it was a very tight fit. Everyone would drive in three hour intervals and on the second day around noon we would see where we were.
So there I was, looking down at the murky green water. Next to me was my friend Josh. We looked at eachother for a bit, then decided to just go for it. Besides, I need some stories for my grandchildren someday right? We backed up to the other side of the massive rock, looked at eachother one more time, clicked on my Go Pro in my left hand, then, we took off in a dead sprint.
It was a cold and rainy day in Bayonne, New Jersey home of Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas. The Quantum of the Seas was the newest cruise ship for Royal Caribbean International. It was built as a cold weather ship destined for the waters off the coast of Shanghai. The Quantum was only going to be in New Jersey for a few months and this was going to be my only chance to see this brand new cruise ship. My plan was to leave from work and drive to a hotel that was closest to the port and make it early for an entire ship tour.
Sitting in their respective seats in the Arrow's cockpit, both members of the crew looked out the window at the twinkling planets and stars that dotted the inky black vastness of space, as far as the could see. It had been a little over sixteen hours since their hasty departure from Orion, and they would be coming on to Aquarios's outer space boarder, soon.
I woke up on the shifting sand of the beach.I begin my day by gathering the firewood then I make my pallet and then I go to the fishing hole for my breakfast I was planning to eat a salmon or a langosta.I dive in with my spear and I hear Timothy's voice in my head saying "Phillip, there will be good luck for yourself today." I feel something wrap around my arm and squeezed tight. As fast as I can I swim up as soon as I get to the top I hear "I told you I was stronger than this island," It was Timothy.I was so confused and happy at the same time.I ask "I thought you died from the hurricane."Well, the man from above gave me another chance." To take care of me! We hear a sound almost like a airplane, then we both run to the signal fire to start
Oh of course she continued to wear her most affable face, but the thick, heavy ball of nausea in her stomach refused to budge. Avalyn's veiled threats had struck far more tender flesh than the mermaid could have guessed: perhaps not exactly the fleeting, fiery jealousy of a would-be lover as the mermaid imagined, but something far more primal, and infinitely more vital. Yet Imogen's mettle had been forged on a far crueler crucible than a mermaid's taunts - it didn't matter what she felt on the inside, and hadn't for years. She watched the three - Gregory, Avalyn and Eislan - head into the barn for just a moment, giving Avalyn a playful wink and a pursed-lipped kiss across the distance, without so much as a hint of her hurt to mar the cocksure facade.
When you wake up on a tile floor, it is normal to have a ache in your back. My plan for the day was to go, find, and collect water. I grabbed a spool of fishing line and tied the end to my door frame, and I put the spool in my backpack, so that when I walked I made trail of string to follow back home. With this safety measure in place, I went out in search of water. After only a few hours of exploring, I heard the trickling of water. I bee lined for the source of the noise. I had found a fresh water spring! I fell to my knees, and started drinking. As far as I was concerned, this was the best tasting water on God’s green Earth. I filled several jugs that I had brought from the store, and went on exploring.
It was a long time ago. I was hoping it would never have happened again. I should have when we went into the water. It was as big as the submarine that we were in. It was probably even bigger then our submarine.Gulp is the sound my throat made when I swallowed my water. I was really thirsty from the night. I do not know why yet but it got super hot in my little cubie. I fell off my bed with a loud thud. That is what awoke me. That is when it happened I realized that the ship was sinking. That is when I knew there was no hope for me. I gave up with hope that someday someone will carry on my legacy with catching the beast.
