The morning of October 4 was the date of the South Carolina flood. I remember waking up to my parent’s voice saying “everyone wake up, fast.” Then I ran downstairs to see water seeping in through the doors. All the carpets were starting to float up. I saw my mother and she said to put on shorts so that my pajama pants would not add weight. In addition, she said to put tennis shoes on. By the time I made my way downstairs, everyone was running around. The dogs were taken out of their kennels and were being held. My father went over to the garage and flipped on the lights to see if he could reach the boat. However the water had risen too high to go in the garage. Suddenly we saw lights appear in the driveway, we realized it was a car. We were so joyful until we recognized that it …show more content…
I recall all of us marching up the stairs when we started hearing cracking and thumps from cabinets falling over. We started to call 911. They did not answer because they were getting millions of calls from other people. My parents suddenly said we needed to leave the house. So we all scrambled down the stairs to the front door, my mother and me were the last ones. However, the stairs were muggy from our shoes that were soaked in water. As I was climbing down the stairs, my feet slid out from under me and I fell on my back, which shot a pain all the way through my body. I could hardly manage to swallow without feeling pain. Nevertheless, I picked myself up and kept walking. As we, all stood by the front door the water had come up to our waists. My father told us to stand clear of the door because when he turned the knob it would sling open very fast from the force of the water. When he did turn the knob, he was correct and it whirled open very fast. From all the water that gushed in, the water level rose about one foot higher in seconds. With all this water, tons of debris floated around the
In July 1993 Hardin, Missouri it was a day like other in the small town . The day was gray and the dark clouds covered the enormous sun. It started to rain, but what they didn’t know was that the storm was going to get worse! The little river in Missouri was the one that started it all. Water rushed faster than my mom on Black Friday, into their homes. The people rushed out of their homes. The storm got worse, but what they didn’t think of was that there was a little problem the dead was going to rise but they would not walk but float! This is what happened the water rushed to the cemetery and made the coffins of the towns loved ones had came up in the surface
The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 was one of the most destructive in the history of the United States, proving that the levee only policy was a failure and the limits of human control over the river. The beginning of the flood, from the initial crevasse, poured out “468,000 second-feet onto the Delta that triple the volume of a flooding Colorado, more than double a flooding Niagara Falls and the entire upper Mississippi ever carried” (pg 203). The flood of 1927 “shifted perceptions of the role and responsibility of the federal government… shattered the myth of a quasi-feudal bond between Delta blacks and the southern aristocracy...accelerated the great migration of blacks north. And it altered both southern and national politics....”
This paper is on the South Carolina Flood which caused many problems, residents had to leave their homes, the flood left 17 dead, 2 of which were from North Carolina. The flood wiped out many homes and the majority of the roads leading out of South Carolina. Andy Shaine quotes “At the moment we have 411 roads closed in South Carolina, 129 have been washed out,”. All of this destruction was caused from a broken dam, which workers are working around the clock to fix.
It was wednesday when it started I remember I was in my room. Loud sirens began to wail and my dad came in to get me. The look on his face was very concerning and I knew something was wrong. The
I sat in silence while Louis drove. I’d glanced at the clock periodically, calculating our arrival time. We had left earlier than usual to accommodate for the impending sea of cars in the parking lot. For a small town, high school basketball against a rival school was about as big as it got. So, everybody in town was going to be there, and by everybody, I mean Katrina was going to be there.
This is the story of hurricane Harvey, which was predicting to directly hit in our area. According to the meteorologists, it was predicted that we would have thirty to forty inches of rain, that will cause flooding to streets and houses. My family and I were preparing for the storm by shopping at a grocery store to buy seven days of non-perishable foods, gallons of water, and batteries in case of a power outage. When we finished there, we searched for a gas station to fill up on a full tank of gas for our vehicles. As soon we returned home, I charged all my devices, such as cell phones and tablets. That was Friday, day one. Day two, Saturday, I sat in the house all day watching the news and the weather forecast. According to the meteorologist we were supposed to have down pouring rain but nothing happened. It was not until later that night when I was watching the Texan pre-season game that the rain started pouring down. During, the half-time my lights started going on and off. Crossing my figures hoping the power did not turn off and thankful it turns right back on in a minute. At the same time, I was curious about outside, so I decided to open the door and take a peek. The water was about to come up to my front yard, but receded to the street. The next day I woke up to the sound of the news, and it was devastating to see many homes and cars flooded.
If a hunter doesn’t understand an animal, they will never catch it. Knowing a subject allows me to better understand it and benefit from it. Being absorbed with myself cuts me off from seeing the needs of others. Earlier in my life I was known as hurricane Kenna; this name was given to me because I was a picky hotheaded jerk. I rarely thought of others and was a kid who didn’t take a huge interest in the welfare of those around me. I would try to help someone if they were in some kind of trouble, but was more intrigued by what was going on in my life. I soon found out that the best way to relieve my problems, is to understand and help the feelings of someone else and grasp the idea that IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT ME.
The flooding in South Carolina caused over $1 billion in damage. Thousands of residents, many surprised to find that their homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage, have had their lives shattered without any public assistance. Seventeen people have been killed, hundreds have been evacuated and thousands of homes have been destroyed, including the state capital of Columbia. Over 500 roads and bridges have been closed and tens of thousands of homes have been left without water and
executed by the community. When they were released from jail, the first place that they went was to the scaffold, to be shown to the community. In The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the scaffold was not only a place of shame, but it was where character 's social status rose and fell throughout the book.
Recent flooding in the state of South Carolina has highlighted that there is an on-going issue with flooding that is affecting the state. Specifically, this paper will attempt to address the contributors and effects of coastal flooding on the state with an emphasis on the coastal cities, as well as solutions that have been proposed to mitigate the effects of flooding. Flooding causes loss of life, loss of property, and causes millions of dollars in funds to be spent on restoration and reconstruction. While the historic flooding in the state had devastating effects on the interior of the state, the coastal cities were also flooded. However, coastal cities, such as Charleston, have been seeing flooding in the city for many years due to many

The natural disaster that I can remember was the hurricane Rita of 2005. I was hired as a teacher in June to begin teaching in August. This was my first year as a teacher and several weeks later there was a hurricane in the gulf. The city of Beaumont began to welcome all families from New Orleans and they also made room for several students into the schools. The next couple of weeks Beaumont was under a hurricane Rite threat and many people recalled, was under a hurricane Rite threat and many people recall the devastation that Katrina did to New Orleans. I was devastated to hear about the storm on its way toward Beaumont Texas. The weather channel warned everyone to evacuate the cities all around Beaumont area. I was prepared to stay home
On April 10, 1912 I sailed away on the Titanic. Throughout the four days filled with laughter, joy.untl one specific night at 11:40, we were injoying our night when a iceburg was coming up a head ready to hit the ship.rushing out our beds confused on whats going we were given lifejackets. When i first got on the ship i was told that it was "unsinkable". Not to soon after we hit, the collision was fatal and the icy water soon poured into the ship. People were paniking in bunches and running crazy like a swarm of bees.Things started to faal/fly as the ship tilted, killing multiple people. The water bagan to fill the boat as people feared for thier lives and families lives. Each passenger was issued a life jacket, but the life expectancy would
The definition of hysteria is an exaggerated or uncontrollable emotion, usually found within groups of people. An example of hysteria includes overpopulation, the futuristic “problem” that is not and will not be a dilemma in the foreseeable future. Back in 15,000 B.C., the world population was five million. Today, it is a staggering seven billion plus. This has caused unease that overpopulation will be a problem for our future generations. Although many developing countries around the globe are implementing population control laws, there should be no need for concern about the situation because overpopulation is a myth, scientifically projected to not be an issue, and far-fetched.
It was the first Sunday of December morning when my father asked me to take some boxes to the basement, I had never been down there, as a kid I always thought it was scary, but know as a 19-year-old guy, how could I say no. I went downstairs with a couple of boxes, but could not find any place to put them. The area was a mess, so I decided that I would organize every box that was there. While I was organizing, I notice this one box hidden in the back, so, I decided to open it. Inside the box, there was a newspaper and a couple of burnt pictures. Therefore, I decided to read the article, I could not understand much, it was an 18 years old newspaper, but it talked about a burning house with two twin babies, It said that one had been saved with no harm while the other one was rescued later on with severe burn mark. It was a miracle that other baby had survived, they called him miracle Carlos, and his brother Richard. I stood there for a second before my brain processed
