Throughout my short life in Southern California, I have encountered a multitude of different natural disasters, strange weather patterns and a shift in climate. There have been three distinct phases of my life in which the occurrence of all of these can be found. At my elementary school, the more you aged, and thus changed grades, the better the field trips became. In the third grade, I had graduated from field trips around my community and my school and was finally allowed to venture into surrounding neighborhoods in search of whatever educational task was at hand. My class, with the help and organization from my teacher Mrs. Budde as well as a large number of parent chaperones, went to Eaton Canyon Nature Preserve to learn more about the environment and how it operates. This nature …show more content…
However, recently the drought that is wracking California has been a huge detriment to Yosemite Valley. While there is still snow and nature surrounding visitors all the time, the rivers, lakes and falls have noticed the effect of the dwindling water supply. After a school trip to Yosemite Valley that specifically focused on how natural disasters impact large areas of protected wildlife, everyone began to take more notice of how Yosemite was becoming dried up just like the rest of California. Normally, after the five mile hike up steep rock and dirt paths, one would expect to hear the roar of water slipping by and see clear water rushing past and down into two different pools. Yosemite Falls, while still having water going through it’s carved out rock, had become a trickle when compared to its previous beauty. At this point in my life, I knew about enough about the environment to know the causes and effects of prolonged droughts on an ecosystem but being able to see it firsthand was an entirely different
It was April of 1999. My family was at home. Children were running outside. The asphalt was burning. Cars rolled up to the entrance of the apartments and BANG. I grew up in Stockton, California. Surprisingly, as a minority, I wasn’t really a minority. There were, in fact, a large and diverse population of Asian-Americans. But, Stockton is not the ideal place to live. It was hot and dry, almost to the point of a drought. Stockton was also ranked as the one of the top 5 most dangerous cities in California. So, having a nice and safe family is kind of difficult. Eventually, my family decided to move to Crescent City, California when my dad retired. It was a world of difference. There were trees, plentiful water, and a nice cool temperature. This
Field trips are used as a great tool to motivate and educate students. They are enjoyable for both students and teachers. Field trips give students the opportunity to get away from learning in the classroom and dive into learning through hand-on experiences.
Hello, reading over your discussion about growing up in Inglewood California brings to mind my African American co-worker who talks about living in Compton. She tells us often how growing up in that area you had to carry either a gun or a knife and be on guard whenever you go anywhere. She is a very dear friend of mine and she reminds me she is a changed person from the way she used to be. Her mother still lives in California but in a better neighborhood now but she is planning a trip to see her mother. My friend often tells me years ago she and I would have never gotten along because she had so much anger inside her. I am glad my friend did get out of that neighborhood alive and somehow found in her heart to not keep anger inside.
I grew in a very small Northern California town. I am an only child and I was mainly raised by my mom who worked full time as a waitress. These are only two sentences about me, however I think they paint a picture about the way I look at the world. When you think small town you think sheltered, and you would be right. When you think Northern California you think liberal, you would again be right. When you think only child of a single parent you think independent but close to her mom, you would once agin be correct. Perhaps you didn’t guess all those things from the first two sentences, but I am here to tell you that many people can. I tend to read like an open book. I’m easily guessable.
In 1978, when I was 14, my family moved from Phoenix, AZ to Cerritos, CA; a small city in the heart of the greater Los Angeles area. Phoenix was mainly White, Barry Goldwater conservatives trying their best to hold onto 1950’s Americana, but Los Angeles in the late 1970s was different; it was alive, vibrating to frequencies of the differing cultures that called the L.A. basin home. Looking back it still fills me with excitement, but truth be told I was scared to death. When I first arrived I had no friends, no experience to prepare me for the full on culture shock I found myself facing, nor any thought of how special that area would be to me. No other place than Southern California could have provided a better backdrop to develop the foundation
I was born in Modesto ,CA on August 17, 2003 in Modesto hospital . I lived in Atwater ,CA most of my life ,but then I moved to Merced this year. Places that I have visited that feel like home is Watsonville and Santa Cruz. I have been in the same school for 8 years . Also, I have had a separate year in preschool. When I was in preschool I went to a school near Winton ,CA. During my magical 8 years I stayed in Bellevue since kindergarden through 8th grade.
In the first place, 1930 was hard for most people even though I hadn’t experienced it but my family and I were one of the survivors that lived thanks to my father. My Father died during the dust bowl due to pneumonia. Since my father died my mom is a single parent so I have to go to school. I go to school with a trash bag and out of nowhere people start calling me names like mentally retarded, but I don't care because they are the rich kids here. A few have passed and I started to do things like work go to school and other stuff people do. During the time of school I had better grades than all the students in my class, but one thing that was hard and distracting was my teacher. Sometimes she’d get mad at other students then she would get mad
Many people believe that Orange County, California is the best place to live for its great location, community and economic strong hold. But what those people forget to take into account is the people that make up this community. Living in Mission Viejo, an overwhelming amount of people think that this a place of Eden, that has the greatest neighborhoods to raise children. Well they are wrong. Our self-inflicting wounds are done by teenagers who choose to poison themselves. I was once one of them.
One of the main attractions is the nine different waterfalls that are in Yosemite’s National Park, each one plays an important role in the park. The most visited waterfall is the one that lies in the Yosemite Valley but can be seen throughout the park in some places. Some of these waterfalls are the main water source for a variety of animals. Accordingly, if some of these waterfalls were to run dry it could damage the park and it would cause the animals to move to an unfamiliar place or cause the animals and plants to die out of the park. (Yosemite Waterfalls,
Growing up in Long Beach, CA 90804, there would be various ethnicities that were my neighbors. According to 2010 Census, Long Beach population consists of 40,311 people. Long Beach contains 38.6% of whites, 16.9% of blacks, 14.8% of Asians, and 37.8% of Hispanics, as we can see in Long Beach, Hispanics and whites make up a great percentage in the population and I think this is true. For example, in high school half the school consisted of whites and the rest were Hispanics, Asian, black, and others. Long Beach is a diverse city, but it can also depend exactly what part of Long Beach people live.
The California Drought is one of the most catastrophic weather and climate related events in recent history. It has singlehandedly altered the geographic landscape of the state and brought down entire industries to a grinding halt. Not since global warming became a prominent fixture in the national spotlight has a climate issue so deeply challenged Californians to reconsider their lifestyles according to their climate conditions. This essay will examine the origins of climate change and the California Drought, how the two are related, the current state of California as a result of the drought, and the future outlook of California.
During the field trip, I participated in slogging through the Everglades. This was a very interesting activity because we were over waist deep in the cold water. The journey seemed long, however, it consisted of numerous turns, and we ended close to where we started. During the hike, we were surrounded by Sawgrass. Sawgrass has sharp edges so we were warned not to pull down on the plant. We had to push the plant up, out of the way instead of pulling it down. This was very helpful. At the end of the journey, we were covered in mud. After the hike, we had a working lunch. We completed a lab in which we were given a bucket that contained a small ecosystem. We had to pour out the bucket and then observe the small critters and plants that we collected. Overall, this was a very exciting part of the field trip.
Moving here from Los Angeles was one of the better things that’s happened to me in my life. I know, that’s a hard sentence to swallow even for me. Being on that plane, looking down at the city I called home for so long didn’t phase me one bit, nothing did. “Do you miss it?”, there was no real straight answer to that question nor will there ever be. I always answer “Yeah it's different here, but I mainly miss my friends”. Los Angeles always had a place in me, those breezy summer nights at the beach, the sunny days that never acknowledged winter was even a season and never needing to wear anything but a t-shirt and shorts. It’s not that I want to forget all about it or that I can’t. Los Angeles was always something more than just a city with
I was thinking about an item in my life that held great meaning, an object that was full of nostalgia, and at first, I thought of my acoustic guitar, but I realized that my blanket was the right topic to write about. It seems strange that something so simple could be so important, but it holds many memories of my childhood, which felt like a sturdy subject for this write-up. My blanket has a calming aroma that smells of flowers and fresh air, and that scent is what reminds me of the many things I have been through. For example, there were many times when I struggled with challenges in my life I would comfort myself by wrapping it around me.
I hope you had a nice weekend. Will you happen to be in San Francisco on Tuesday, September 1 in the afternoon? Both Chris and Tracy would love to catch up. If not, we are more than happy to setup a call to go over the Energy and Real Assets Space. When you have a moment, please let us know.
